Strandbeest, Beach Animals, are the creation of Dutch artist Theo Jansen. In this video I demonstrate a Strandbeest built from a kit. These dynamic sculptures are walking physics labs, lots of material for teaching structures and mechanisms. These are dynamic sculptures powered by energy from the wind.

I just built one of these kits today! For such a complex kit, it was shockingly easy to build! I've built my own legged robots, mostly with brass rod, hinges, and solder. I use relaxation oscillators to create chains of inverting timers (much like Theo's air powered "liars") to create repeating patterns, or chains of times sequences to control the leg motors.

Wow, human imagination is endless! Amazing hobby, and amazing feelings when you accomplish something like that!👍🤝

One full rotation of legs = 2.65 sec 60sec/2.65*25 revolution = 566 RPM

GoliathGunner 750rpm for a 2sec revolution time.

550 rpm was my guess based on RU-vid time stamps

You can slow down the RU-vid playback by a factor of 4 ( speed = 0.25 ) and that is slow enough to eyeball it with the computer's desktop clock second display... I got 2.75 seconds / revolution, I observed 4 complete "steps" of one leg in 44 seconds, with YT speed = 0.25. That's pretty close agreement with the other fellow in this posting.

Ha, amazing video and clips! I'm also in the process of making one out of paper, with paper joints and straws. 'll upload the plans if it works good.

+Debbie321lopez Look, I think RU-vid already has enough negativity. At the time of the video, I posted this comment because I thought it might help people who would like to DIY one; plus I was one of the people who requested this video. And I'm totally ok with you not giving a crap about my comment and thinking it's useless. I actually kinda get that. But please, please, don't be agressive. There is no reason to be, it's just a waste of time! You could literally have not said anything and continued browsing the comments, and we'd be both in a better place! 💙

+Debbie321lopez Oh, my bad, sorry! ... yeah no, paper hinging is too weak and fragile, so I dropped it (honestly, I also got uber-lazy). Though I might retry this in a very near future, I really wanna make this work. I can't believe I managed to get you this wrong, lol. Sorry, I may be in need of some sleep lol.

There is no need to use the term "beach animal" when strandbeest literally translates to "strand beast" and yes we do use the word "Strand" in the english language. Strand is used in the english language to refer to long, thin stretches of beach - naturally occurring or human constructed

In that film of the Strandbeest walking along a beach....the Strandbeest isn't even on a beach, the video has been composited. The angle/lighting are incorrect and don't match up. I'm sure you could make one actually roam a beach but you wouldn't want to leave it there because it would end up just walking into the sea.... probably why they don't actually do it.
