Beach Fishing set-up part 4 - Beach Shelter - Igloo or Bigaloo

In this video I try to show a direct comparison between the Ian Golds Igloo beach shelter or the larger version, the Bigaloo.
Both are of similar construction and are quick and easy to erect. They can also both be used at varying heights/widths to suit conditions or personal preference. They both use one of their flaps to wrap the shelter and this is secured by velcro removing the need for a separate bag to store them in and reduce clutter. Fully stowed they are both under 2.20 metres long but the Bigaloo does take up more space and weighs 1 kg more.
Igloo 5kg
Bigaloo 6kg

I'm a bit late arriving on this one Mark. Informative video on the comparisons of the two . I feel there is a strong market for a lot smaller beach shelter . I still own an original John Holden designed Sundridge Trident shelter. Will never get rid of as it's so bloody light and small to carry on long jaunts. The design is so simplistic to put up, being one cross member and a material flap to pull over the front. I've put it up in conditions that you wouldn't even contemplate getting one of those shelters out. They're only big enough for one person , tackle and bait etc.. But the profile is so low it can withstand storm conditions to a certain degree. Acts as a great sturdy windbreak with very strong onshore winds. When they were discontinued, and I don't know why , they were like gold dust to get hold of. They're also a great crossover for those days when you think , shall I bother taking the shelter today? Well yes, take the Trident because you won't even notice you're carrying it. I think angling manufacturers are missing out on this design , as there's a fair few anglers that will take bare minimum with them, especially those that have to walk a distance. Just some input, and I enjoyed your video btw 👍

Interesting to hear as I’m not sure I’ve seen one of your shelters before or at least can’t remember one. I’ll have to look it up to see what they look like.

I've owned and used both these shelters. I always lay the shelter flat on the ground first, splay it out, then put sand or shingle on the skirt (check out Ian Gold's own instructional video). Only then do you pull up the canopy and fix the poles in place. I've seen so many people struggling to errect them as you have in breezy conditions. The bigaloo is actually the same size as the igloo. The door is what makes it 'bigger' (when used). In practice, I found the door to be cumbersome and unstable in poor weather and restricted the view of my rods too much. I ended up selling the bigaloo and only use the igloo shelter these days. On occasions I use a normal beach windbreaker pegged in front of the igloo for added protection but very rarely do I need that. Great shelters once you know how to erect and take down correctly.
@seaangling
@seaangling Год назад
I agree in laying them on the ground, loading the skirt and then raising to assemble. This video was always meant to compare the 2 should anyone be thinking about buying. I have covered raising a beach shelter and orientating for best effect on another video but maybe I should do a shelter specific one.

A really useful video Mark, thank you for thinking of this and sharing your thoughts. I use the Shakespeare Salt shelter at present and really like it, easy to assemble and relatively light and robust. However, the Igloo is certainly on my future kit list!
@seaangling
@seaangling Год назад
I think the Shakespeare Salt or the equivalent Diawa version are also really impressive and they have the benefit of packing down really small/short which may suit some. I thought of this particular video as I couldn’t find one showing the 2 together. Thank you for commenting. 🎣👍🏻

I’m actually after a new shelter the imax wasn’t very accommodating for a man of my stature that night on Chesil. Think I’m sold on the bigaloo now with the door
@seaangling
@seaangling Год назад
The Bigaloo is a bit heavier (+1kg) over the Igloo but that front part increases the floor space and will close with Velcro tabs. Not 100% waterproof but I always put the door in the leigh side from the weather. It will fit with rods in most quiver/hold-alls.

Alternatively, you could get some little clamps , plastic building clamps/grips, and a blue tarp and make a door, tie a guy rope to the top front poles and pull it taught instead of an extra pole, clip the sheet to the side front pole thread it through the blue tarp holes the other side. Sorted. Make it any shape as the rope can be moved anywhere. You could have a massive front porch if you wanted. For winter.

@seaangling

I’m pretty sure it is single layer but doubled up to reinforce in certain places. Although you’ve got me doubting myself now 🤔
@DoEverythingOutdoors
@DoEverythingOutdoors Год назад
You could tie a guy rope to the groin , then straight to the tent top, tightish . Throw a big tarp over and it could be 3m wide, with the shelter serving as just the end of the big tent. stones sand on the back of the blue tarp.
@seaangling
@seaangling Год назад
You could and that would be the “back of the wilds” solution. Personally I like my beach shelter as they stand up to some serious wind when set correctly.
@DoEverythingOutdoors
@DoEverythingOutdoors Год назад
@@seaangling I mean add a tarp if your camping out, then the pack stays light when your not, the bigloo is always heavier, thats what i mean. the igloo makes a perfect stable base for a bigger camp if you want it. Add a tarp for versatility on longer trips.

if only you had picked a day with the wind blowing 20 odd mph and driving sleet and snow, and then see how easy they are to erect, i have the original beach buddy and im sure it will see me out, i also have the docwra brolly with the side flaps, both must be 30 years old, the buddy has seen much more use, it has the front flaps and i have never undone them, not sure what sort of sea angler wants to get on the beach then sleep in their shelter, we aren't carp anglers, if your baits not in the water then you cant catch fish
@seaangling
@seaangling Год назад
These shelters are particularly easy compared to others to put up in a wind. Point the back into the wind and lay it on the ground, extend the flaps and cover them. Lift the central part up and insert lower pole and then the upper. Taking it down is the reverse except lower it all and then walk forward to dislodge sand/stones. 24 hour sessions on the beach deserve a cat nap at some point.
