My head canon is that the only reason Nanami stopped Nobara in Shibuya was because he did not want her to suffer the same fate as Haibara who died fighting a curse way beyond his capabilities. He also said that I am the bare minimum required to be involved because he knew that if he was with Haibara at that time, he could've saved him.

My head canon is that he knew he would die in shibuya the second he heard that gojo got sealed but went towards his inevitable slaughter anyway to give the students a running start which is why he tried to send nobara away. His death hurt me more when I realised all this time he was kinda just going with the flow, working because he can’t survive without the money he gets from it; just, living without a purpose nor a break and finally when he dies, his last words are “You’ve got it from here.” Like he finally got a break, that he could just, rest, and do nothing. He looked so peaceful even with half his body charred beyond repair.

The way he only truly smiled was the day when he can finally rest, he had been working his whole life that on the verge of his death, he dreamed of his dream vacation, far away from Japan to rest peacefully. I'm glad that he can finally rest, but not this way at all.. such a well-written character.
