This is the third in a series of demonstration videos showing how to make a bead crochet rope bracelet. It is a companion to the book Crafting Conundrums: Puzzles and Patterns for the Bead Crochet Artist, by Ellie Baker and Susan Goldstine, available in December 2014 from A K Peters/CRC Press. The book's website is www.crcpress.co..., and its Facebook page is / craftingconundrums . Go to • Bead Crochet Tutorial ... for a playlist of the entire video series.
Our thanks to Andrew Paul Keiper and Justin Foreman from the St. Mary's College of Maryland Library Media Center, who helped produce this video series.
In this video, you will learn how to start a bead crochet rope, as demonstrated in 9mm plastic craft beads. We strongly recommend that people new to bead crochet watch our second video, Stitch Overview ( • Bead Crochet Tutorial ... ), before this video because the first stitches into the initial crochet chain are hard to understand unless you already have some sense of how bead crochet slip stitch works.

Thank-you, thank-you, thank-you! I am an avid crocheter, if crocheter is a word?, and Kumihimo enthusiast. I’ve just recently discovered beaded crochet tubes. After watching many videos and MANY failed attempts to get past the second row I stumbled upon your instructional video, and FINALLY it clicked. Your instruction is excellent, but the use of the pony beads and yarn was what made the magic happen for me!

So glad to hear these helped. I can't remember where we first learned about using pony beads and yarn, but they also make the process SO much easier to demonstrate on video.

I just want to thank you SO much for this tutorial! It has finally clicked for me how to this! Using the pony beads really helped! Now I'm off to try the tiny beads and hope I can do it! This tutorial is the best one I've seen! Thank you !

+leetlemother Glad to hear it! If size 11 seed beads are still too fiddly, size 8 seed beads are a good intermediate step down. Happy beading!

I have crocheted kilometres of bead ropes (buying 1/4 kilogram of Jablonex in one colour = lots of materials = lots of crochet ropes. the start has always been a problem but your twist up and away is great and after years, I have learned something new. Thank you!

Thanks to Your tutorial, starting new bracelet is now far less frustrating than it used to be :) I developed my own technique based on Your instructions and now it's absolutely no problem.

Very helpful - at first, this "most awkward stitch" and row after it usually took 4-5 tries before I could proceed with the next row. Now I just started another bracelet at first try. TOHO 11o Trans-lustered Sapphire, 10 beads per row - wife will be happy, she likes blue :)

Hi can you please tell me what size yarn and crochet hook and beads you are using. I need to practice on what you are using in your video to start the bracelet. Thank you

Hi, Debbie. Please take a look at the first video in the series (ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-S81yZ0g1bP4.html). I describe all the materials in detail there, and they're all listed in the title cards at the beginning of the video. Happy beading!

Do you know where I can find a flat beaded crochet instructions?
@susangoldstine6636
@susangoldstine6636 7 лет назад
I'm not sure what stitch you're describing. There are many ways to incorporate beads in crochet (and knitting), but I'm not aware of one that is very similar to bead crochet in the round. For this particular type of stitch (one slip stitch per bead--or the alternate form, one single crochet per bead), crocheting flat would put half the beads on one side of the work and half the beads on the other. There are also some bead crochet rope patterns (like Judith Bertoglio-Giffin's caterpillars or our Möbius bracelets) that use different sizes of beads so they lie almost flat--could that be what your friend was describing? Sorry I can't be more helpful.

Someone said it is almost like the spiral crochet stitch.

How do you keep it from being so loose? It just unraveled way too easy. Now have to start over. :(
@teressa7666
@teressa7666 8 лет назад
+S Soutache (simplysoutache) I actually got a good few rows (after several attempts) but the first two or three are loose and a couple beads are wonky. Is there any way to undue the bad ends once you get a good length of rope?.
@susangoldstine6636
@susangoldstine6636 8 лет назад
+S Soutache (simplysoutache) That gets better with practice--finding the right tension in the beginning part of a bracelet is tricky. You can pick out the beginning stitches if you like, though it's harder than unraveling the working end. To do this, look closely at your starting end to see the path of the yarn/thread and pull it out loop by loop with a needle or pin and your fingers. It takes patience, and the bead that's left after the last stitch you pull out might be a bit loose, but you can still sew the ends together and it looks pretty good. Another bead crocheter (unfortunately, I can't remember which one so I can't find the link) suggested the following technique, which I used a few times before my own rope beginnings got better: with scrap yarn/thread and beads of the size you're using, bead crochet a few rounds in the circumference you're using. Then, cut that yarn/thread and crochet into the stub with your actual strung beads. When you're a few rows in, you can pick out the yarn/thread that connects to the starting stub and set that aside.
