Important warning about the ADC inputs: due to a chip bug, the ADC pins may be briefly shorted together and/or to ground or vdd_adc during power up, specifically during the first 7ms after vdd_adc comes up. This means that if an analog input is connected directly to ground or vdd (e.g. a potentiometer that's at one of the extrema) a lot of current may briefly flow and potentially damage the processor, hence it's a good idea to use a resistor to limit this current. See advisory 1.0.32 of the AM335x Errata for more details.

A most interesting video. I thought that I would get my old Beaglebone Black out and run through these lessons. 😎 Thank you.

BTW, if you need ever more than 6 PWM outputs, three eCAP modules (0, 2, and the one in PRUSS) and four of the timers (4-7) can also be used as PWM outputs, bringing the total up to 13 outputs. They're not as fancy-featured* but they're perfectly adequate for most needs. * The three pwm 'A' outputs have a delay line allowing them to be micro-adjusted in steps of roughly 200 picoseconds. No idea why you might need it, but it's still pretty cool.

If you have a min, what are your thoughts on using it as a 3D printer host and/or controller versus the raspberry pi?
@paulmcwhorter
@paulmcwhorter 9 лет назад
Jon Gordon I think it comes down to whether you need analog inputs or not. For now, the user base for Raspberry Pi is so much greater, unless I need analog in pins, at this point I lean towards the Raspberry Pi 2.

I'm not using a begale bone board but the board uses the same method you explained the best content to me from this video is how you explained the GPIO channels and the color diagrams. I need to search through your video line and find using ethernet communication I'm using windows 10 WSL 2 to communicate using it to control my cnc plasma table. Keep up the excellent videos.

Mr. McWhorter: Do you have any lessons showing how to store data into the DRAM? I haven't seen one thing by anyone using the DRAM. Also, I don't see a memory controller on the board. Is it built into the 3358? If not, how is the DRAM memory interfaced to the 3358? Thanks, Kit
@paulmcwhorter
@paulmcwhorter 8 лет назад
+KitCox That is really well beyond what I will be covering in these lessons.
@KitCox
@KitCox 8 лет назад
+Paul McWhorter I was aware these lessons didn't cover the DRAM. I was asking in general. I was also curious if the 3359 had a memory controller in chip. The Raspberry PI also has a 512MB DRAM. You have a number of lessons on that as well and I want to thank you for all the work. They have brought me completely up to speed on learning the basics on these development boards. I'm learning this because a project popped up that requires me to store a string of data bits in RAM, in particular the string from the Cirrus CS5340 A/D converter as used in HD stereo audio components. For all I have found out so far the RAM may not be user accessible and used by the ARM for program storage only. Thanks again for all the lessons. Kit
@MatthijsvanDuin
@MatthijsvanDuin 8 лет назад
+KitCox There's indeed an mDDR/DDR2/DDR3 memory controller integrated on the AM335x. When running linux you're always using the DRAM, it's what you're running from. There are ways to reserve a chunk of physical RAM for your private use but there's rarely a need to do so. I did so for a buffer to automatically store ADC data (using DMA), but since I only needed 32 bytes for that I used a piece of the on-chip SRAM instead.

No it isnot true..BBB has big support from TI...you can run Linux,Android, TI RTOS (SDK) and ccstudio IDE, PinMUX tools..sysconfig tools, reference design, technical document and example and tutorial, white papers...Yacto project support ..Linaro support...actually it is ready for industrial automation and smart home devices..it is serious product ..so it requires serious approach.

It really is in a different league than RPI and Arduino. That makes it hard to build mainstream community - but if you get good at this device you can make actual commercial products not just gimmicks.
@squee222

you didn't mention that about a third of the pins are unusable with hdmi out, and emmc, that you can not drive pins high until after the board is turned on, the numerous secondary, and tertiary functions of the pins. this video is very incomplete. everyone should just read the manual.

Checkout the PRU-ICSS/G - it is pretty insane the amount of power in the am335x soc at such a low price
