Call him hilarious. Call him laugh-out-loud funny. But whatever you do call him Bean. In the comedy that rocked America, Rowan Atkinson is the outrageous Mr. Bean, sent on a mission to California to escort the world famous painting of "Whistler's Mother" to its new home in The Grierson Gallery. What the gallery owner, one of the richest men in America, and his curator David Langley (Peter MacNicol) believe, is that Mr. Bean is Dr. Bean, a renowned art expert. In fact he is just a sleepy-headed, wildly eccentric museum guard. He's also the clumsiest, craziest, wackiest, wildest, most bizarre character they have ever come across, and certainly not someone you'd entrust one of the world's most valuable paintings to. But they have - and now wreaking havoc in the Grierson Gallery and wrecking Langley's marriage is just the beginning. With only hours to go before the official unveiling by the museum's benefactor, General Newton (Burt Reynolds), something terrible has happened to "Whistler's Mother" and only one man has the power to put it right. The only problem is… that man is Bean.

I saw this in the theater. When he dropped the fabric and showed the painting, the entire audience busted out in the loudest laughter I have ever heard in a theater. They both were so brilliant in these scenes.

Whistler's Mother was mentioned, as part of a PowerPoint slide, during one of my university classes on modernism. Had to cover my mouth and look at my notes to avoid laughing. I think of this movie whenever Whistler's Mother appears.

This is probably one of my favorite Mr. Bean skits ever. There's certainly comedy within tragedy, and ruined artwork always seems to hit the mark. Remember the failed restoration of that Spanish Fresco years back? Anyways, great scene.

Yeah. The thing is, the fresco had no great value, and the church it was in had had moisture issues for years. So it wasn't getting restored professionally (the woman that did it had been retouching the clothes for a while before the face aldo started coming off). Worse was a painted wood sculpture of St George fighting the dragon, which was repainted in an art class for children with enamel paints, while presumably the higher ups in the church pocketed the money earmarked for the restoration. Thing is, you see the pictures of this first restoration and think they painted it crosseyed/with a lazy eye and a dumbfounded expression, but no, the pictures before that and after the second restoration had it the same way, turns out the original artist could give the first "restaurators" a run for their money.

This represents the latest trilogy of the Skywalker Saga for me. The sneeze is Force Awakens. Rian Johnson tries to save the painting by using a myriad of intrusive and ill-suited chemicals in The Last Jedi. And The Rise of Skywalker is represented by Mr. Bean's attempt of reconstructing the painting. Masterpiece.

@@lw8099 Basically, JJ Abrams copied the original trilogy, which I would say was the sneeze, since I see it as a semi-harmless fan service. Rian Johnson tried to fix the new trilogy by adopting a very dark theme, and going towards a totally new narrative direction, which was quite harmful and destructive. Rise of Skywalker is basically the child's drawing upon the completely destroyed original painting, as they tried to turn back to the roots but completely botched it since it made first two movies completely nonsensical, and none of the conclusions had a proper build-up towards them. I'd say Mr. Bean would do a better job directing that movie.

I live in Spain and I remember back when I was a little kid they showed us this movie in english class, I couldn't understand anything but now as an adult I understand everything which makes this and all the scenes funnier as it feels re-experiencing the movie. If only Whistler's Mother had been in a frame with glass rather than a frame where it's exposed. Then Mr. Bean would've only sneezed on the glass and the painting would've been fine. But then this is a Mr. Bean movie after all.

You might not believe it man...but this thing in which paintings are behind glass is a new thing. I basically grew up in art museums, and I can't remember seeing a painting behind glass (the only one I heard of was the Mona Lisa in France). But I guess it's gotten more and more common. So for the time, this movie is entirely believable. They used to clean paintings in the past, remove the grime and restore them. Guess glass is easier though. (I can't speak at all for the US though during the 90s, maybe the US did have paintings behind glass, I'm European so).

The reason there were bubbles in the paint after Mr. Bean removed the ink stains is because he used the wrong type of paint thinner, dissolving the paint.

And if you look some one tapped "brush cleaner" on the container. That's some potent stuff. Meant specially for dried up paint. Lol as an artist, my heart skipped a beat when I saw that lable.
