Loved this as a kid. At least, we always sang the "beans and rice, beans and rice is nice" part all the time. And i do like beans and rice to this day, in many styles. These little PSA's camd about at the time when we had the most "latch key kids" than before any time in the US. So i think there was a pretty good effort made to get more healthful and filling foods into kids diets. At least the staples.
I think this was played regionally. I grew up in the northeast where we were raised on a diet of "meat and potatoes" and never saw this episode but my wife, who is Latina and grew up in Los Angeles, was raised watching it. We were joking about Conjunction Junction one day and she started singing it. I was a little surprised as I thought I'd heard them all. Made sense though....she was raised eating beans and rice.
When you see the individual bean and rice dumped on the kid's plate, you can see the abject terror in his eyes as he's remembering the mountain of bean and rice corpses he just consumed.
I'm not a huge fan of beans, but I do enjoy any reddish varieties simmered in a sweet and sour tomato sauce...even as simple as mixing a little brown sugar, vinegar, and lemon juice into some ketchup or canned tomato sauce, with a few dashes of desired spices. A little minced and sautéed celery, onion, and green pepper added at the last minute gives it some nice crunch. Then just spoon the sauced beans onto a pile of hot, fluffy, nicely cooked rice (definitely not the Minute type, but one that needs some attention and love) and dig in. Probably one of the best "peasant food" meals ever.
as an asian, we have our own way of eating beans and rice, it’s called naato. the beans are covered with a fish-flavored soy sauce, and then mixed with rice to make a meal. i love this dish and i really hope i am not the only one who knows about this dish.
Yes and the funny thing is this is the same animator who made another one of these PSA is where it said hey man so down what's the rush about eating too quickly
For a quick and tasty beans and rice recipe, I recommend La Favorita black beans and Knoll’s Mexican rice. Pop them in the microwave for about 12 mins and you’re good to go. Delicious served with grilled chicken or simply on their own.

Yes, 70s. And you can tell by the rice doing that disco jig. And rice provides energy? Not sure where they got that idea. Anyway seeing this old stuff again almost brings tears to my eyes!
