"Time for Timer was the collective title for a short series of public service announcements broadcast on Saturday mornings on the ABC television network starting in the early 1970s."
- Wikipedia
MESSY, FROZEN, JUICE BRICKS
I love the fact that Timer thinks 12 orange juice cubes are a weeks supply of snacks. At 6 years old, I was so impatient that I never gave them the chance to freeze completely, and would scarf them down immediately!
My little sunshines on a stick where effected by global warming! I'd check on them every 2 minutes, and after checking on them 5 times, well, they seemed frozen enough to me.
I'd "carefully" remove the plastic wrap, which in-turn, would dislodge ALL of my "sticks", and after popping them out of the tray, I was left with 12 messy, partially frozen, ice juice cubes on a sticky dinner plate.
There was orange juice still sloshing around inside of them! After picking one up, the juice cube would collapse sending a trail of orange juice cascading down my arms that would pool up under my elbows and drip to the floor. "SPLASH!!!"
12 orange juice cubes didn't last for a week, they lasted 5 minutes! And as far as nutrition goes, I was lucky if I received even .0000002975% of my daily requirement of vitamin C from those messy, frozen, juice bricks!
But that was okay, because I was proud to have made a "healthy after school snack" for myself, thanks to some helpful advice from a weird little lemon-drop named, Timer.
I hope that you enjoy this treasured blast-from-the-past as much as I do.
Best wishes,
~ Hal R. Kane

I tried this as a kid using KoolAid. It was a great treat. You had to wrap the tray more than one time with the plastic wrap. There was nothing better than Saturday morning cartoons in the 80's. It was educational and informative.

I was originally looking for the " Beans & Rice" PSA 'cause after 40+ yrs (51 now), that song still pops in my head whenever I pull out the old rice cooker. We tried the juice/cube /toothpick thing once with Tang and it kinda worked. All of the toothpicks slid out after a minute or two. I had a paper route, cut grass, and got a weekly allowance so I always had ice cream 🍦 money 💰. It was fun to try it though. Thanks to whoever posted this. Memory Lane is a fun street to vist!

It is because of this very commercial that for years I tortured my mom, and our ice trays, with all manner of popsicle experiments and failures, resulting in messes. I do think it's funny that the suggestion for being indoors with nothing to do is EAT. LOL. Just imagine being 7 years old in 1978, there were no video games, no internet, no movies, no VCRs, no cell phones, there was nothing. I survived on a steady diet of lego and Saturday morning cartoons, supplemented with my trusty 'Huffy' bike, and exploration of the woods, looking for a good place to build a tree fort... then I finally got a computer in 1982... now I'm a software developer, and have been for over 30 years...

@krewgarr I actually did try the orange-juice cubes when I was a kid, but didn't bother with the plastic wrap. They still turned out OK (and delicious) -- the only difference was that the toothpicks weren't perpendicular to the flat face of the cube, but that didn't bother me. But you're right: They're not "snacks." I figured "pomegranate juice" was meant as a joke. Then, when POM came out a few years ago, the first thing I thought was, "Wow, now I can make pomegranate Sunshine on a Stick!"
@Aramanth

Spilled orange juice, presumed all wiped up, but drying to a sticky glaze on the countertop. I did try this one, but toothpicks are too flimsy and they'd break off in my mouth. Then someone had the bright idea to popularize popsicle-shaped frozen molds. Sunshine on a solid stick is much better than sunshine on a pick.
@mestora70
@mestora70 12 лет назад
@krewgarr I believe you are incorrect. I recall eating pomegranates and drinking pomegranate juice as a child in the mid 70. Pomegranate syrup (Grenadine) was also very popular. They used to be commonly called "Chinese apples" before the Korean War.

Forgot about this until now. This used to be on A LOT. I never knew they mentioned pomegranate juice. I never heard of, or saw, pomegranate anything back in the 80's. Wonder if it was more common in other states than NY? Anyway, I made these and we even had the horrid old silver metal ice trays. I also remember having the white, plastic juice pop molds. Wonder if we got those before or after my attempt at recreating this commercial's recipe. lol

But I never had the juice. And today I can't figure out how to find a decent ripe pomegranate. I always break them open too soon cuz the stores put them out before they're ready.
