Bear Bryant documentary 1991 - The Legacy Lives (VHS) 

I lived in NYC after I retired from the Army. I listened to WFAN radio, one of the most popular all-sports radio stations in the country. They interviewed the great John Hannah about his Alabama career and Patriots career. He was asked the toughest game he ever played in. He said the toughest games were the practices at Alabama and that the actual games were easy compared to practices.

Auburn fan here. Was listening to Finebaum a few minutes ago, and they were talking about the day he died. I remember walking out of Kindergarten and getting in our Vista Cruiser station wagon. My mom was in tears. We went to Elmwood Cemetery and took pics of the gravesite. We are all Auburn fans, but definitely respected that man.

I been following coach Bryant ever since I was 15 yrs old and I am 82 now. Best thing ever for Alabama. God blessed him greatly

i came to this video to say that i am the great nephew of The Legend Bear Bryant, you may think im lying, but i kid you not, i am, and, yes his legacy will live on forever!

I am 62 years old today. When I was 16 years old I had a job at the local newspaper shop. I got my thumb cut off. Somebody knew my family and got Mr. Bryant to give me an autograft picture signed by him. True story nice of him to do that for me, I will never forget that.

I was in kindergarten in Birmingham when he died and will never forget the day he died and the day of his funeral. They brought TVs in so we could watch the funeral. He was loved by everyone and as a young boy I didn’t remember much but I can tell you certain details of those two specific days. What a legend, Roll Tide!

My uncle told me a story about meeting Bear Bryant. Bear was down in Riverview FL to help recruit a player for Alabama’s baseball team in the mid 70’s. Bear and the recruit went fishing on the Alafia River and my uncle went to see him from the river bank, when they drifted by my uncle yelled out “I gotta dog named Bear!” Bryant replied “that’s real good son” and kinda laughed. Nearly 50 years later he still tells that story.

Wow, I still have my VHS copy of this. One of the best Christmas presents that I ever received. Many thanks for posting this.

I love Coach Bryant not just because he was a great football coach at Alabama and told me in 1978 I was 17 a high school senior I was good or could play for him nope that's not why ? I love Coach Bryant because he was a great human being a Man Yes A Man A Great Man he changed my life for ever more ? I didn't play for him I played at North Carolina State but I wish I had. Just to meet him in Montgomery that December day in 1978 blessed my life. I've done what he said be a great person first. I love you Coach Bryant AKA 🐻 Bear I'm in tears as I write this I can't help it race was no problem for him he saw people and so do I. Roll Damn Tide.

This song brought tears to my eyes! Look how many years have passed and I see that he affected a lot of good athletes lives, because Paul Bryant reminds me of Paul Brown in some capacity. Great Coaches demand effort that exemplifies the Winners Attitude and Sacrifices! Too bad he didn't stay at Kentucky or hop over to Cincinnati Bearcats! Paul Bryant was Joe Namath's Coach, look what they were able to accomplish! I saw the footage and listened to Joe Namath's Eulogy at Paul Bryant's funeral and I felt the pain Joe was withholding inside.

Vaguely Remember his last game. The Liberty Bowl in 1982. A frigid night in Memphis Tennessee. Alabama won a close game. However an enigmatic end to his reign at Alabama. He died a few weeks later.

The standard every coach strives for.

I’m 36 years old. The first time kicked my mom in the womb was when Van Tiffin put a 50+ yarder through the uprights to beat Auburn in the ‘85 Iron Bowl. Bama football is in every fiber of my DNA. I’m a Birmingham native that to this day looks at the Alabama Football Program as the defining example of PURE GREATNESS. The Bear built that. My Mom vacationed in Europe in 1982. When asked where she was from by the Europeans and she mentioned Alabama the responses were “WOW! Bear Bryant’s state!! We don’t know anything about Alabama or Football but we love Bear Bryant” My Dad and Granddad and other older men never ran out of Bear Bryant stories to tell. They truly LOVED that man without ever meeting in their life. He died 3 years before I was born. As everyone knows Bill Curry and Ray Perkins were NOT as beloved by any stretch. Then Gene Stallings came along and at nearly 7 years old the 1993 Bama/Miami Sugar Bowl and an epic Bama D gave me my first actual memory of a Bama football game. Stallings hung around till ‘96 and Bama stayed relevant. But then…sanctions came down on UA and that began a decade of subpar/mediocre and at times downright awful performances. Sure, 1999 gave us Shaun Alexander and an SEC title. The ‘05 Bama D gave us a little to cheer about. Everything else from 1997-2006 with Mike Dubose, Dennis Francione, Mike Price and finally Mike Shula as HC was hard to watch. I was 20 years old and the majority of my Bama football memories were losses and failure. Then in January of 2007 those oh so unpredictable winds of fate decided to give myself and my generation of Bama fans what they had only heard stories of, our larger than life living legend. Our guy to tell stories about to our grandkids. Nicholas Lou Saban. As I sit here now, almost 16 years, 6 National Titles and 8 SEC Titles later I feel like I’ve not only been blessed equal to previous generations of Bama fans. I feel like my generation of Bama fans was blessed with excellence and winning at a level never before or never again seen in ALL of sports. The level of dominance for Bama in the Saban era is something you literally HAVE to see in person to wrap your mind around. I don’t rank Bear or Saban against each other. Never will. I know that they are all alone at College Football’s highest summit and they spent 40 years of that successful time in my backyard. I’m grateful for the tales you gave my father to tell, Bear Bryant. Coach Saban, I’m grateful to you for showing me what a true leader and winner really look like up close and personal. Thankful. That’s all I can say. Roll Tide everyone!

It would have been good. However the music makes this video horrible. When are these people going to learn music makes the videos crap. We want to hear the footage.

Paul Bear Bryant should of been coach of West Point. He taught boys to become men. He loved every player he coached. He was fair to all. Lets win gentlemen. USC and Oklahoma can play in other bowls because they are afraid to play us in the Sugar Bowl. Rose Bowl should invite Alabama vs USC.

I am 54 year old now .I grow up 70 miles west off Tuscaloosa in Mississippi.I always wanted to play for Coach Bryant.I was in the age bracket with Cornelius Bennett,Derrick Thomas.i always wonder how it was to play at Alabama.

40 years ago today Coach Bryant coached his final game in the Liberty Bowl.

Could bear help us today in 2021 regarding our diferences in america. Great coaches deal with so many young people many sports. We should use their ways to come together.

I've seen every one's comments have been fairly recent yes we know he's got lots of national championships won a lot of games but let's put that aside for a minute it's all about who he was and what he was and still is his words at the beginning of this documentary is so powerful and so inspirational and so true I use it at times a lot of times listen to this to keep my spirits up this man was and is beyond just football the rest speaks clearly for its self

What is the name of the book that is being referred to in the beginning of the documentary when Bear Bryant is being compared to the old man on the bridge with the young man referring to the old man that you'll never walk this bridge again?

Starting at 1:16:52, that is also describing Nick Saban. Even after he wins a College Football Playoff National Championship, he's back to work in the spring the same as if he'd had a losing season.

At lease he didn't punch the opponents linebacker at the end.

There's good and worthy history here. You can tell the interviews feature stories that have been told so many times that they sound rounded off smooth like an old coin. I enjoyed the documentary, and I would only take exception to the theme song at the beginning about Paul Bryant that no one would write and sing today; it's purely blind hero worship bordering on idolatry. Even loyal Bama fans might cringe a little bit at that song these days.

I never have understood why Alabama claims the 1973 National Championship. They got beat in the Sugar Bowl 24-23 by Notre Dame who were undefeated. UPI ranked Bama number one before they played Notre Dame. Actually they can’t claim the championship because there were four teams that wound up with better records than Bama who really were ranked 4th in the AP poll after losing to Notre Dame Dec. 31, 1973.
