In the misty, rain-drenched mountains of southwestern China, within the thick bamboo forests, resides one of the world's most elusive creatures: the giant panda, often called the panda. In the wild, there are merely around 1,500 of these distinctive black-and-white bears.
Pandas predominantly subsist on bamboo shoots and leaves, constituting nearly 99 percent of their dietary intake. On rare occasions, they may also consume alternative vegetation, fish, or small mammals, though bamboo remains the primary component of their diet.
Pandas are voracious eaters, consuming large quantities of food, and dedicating approximately 12 hours daily to this endeavor. This is due to their rather inefficient digestive process, as they manage to break down only a fraction of what they ingest. Bamboo, in general, lacks high nutritional value. To maintain their well-being, pandas must consume substantial amounts of food, equivalent to up to 15 percent of their body weight within a 12-hour period. Hence, they have developed the habit of eating swiftly.
