Doug I remember when you were a bushcrafter that took up whittling. Then you grew to become a really good wood carver and exceptional instructor and mentor, but my friend your abilities are such that now you are a true artist and a master at your craft. Thanks for sharing another amazing project.

I tried carving along with the Scarecrow and broke the brim of the hat. Not just once, but twice. Guess I use too much force. Your knife seems to just flow through the wood. My man has a curly beard too. I bought a $10 hot comb on Amazon and casually used it on him while trimming his hair. His beard was about 4” longer after a quick comb-out with it, and had those soft silky waves just like your carving! If that impressive beard is truly your goal, try that hot comb for beards💕 Meanwhile, love the carving and your artistic talent

I was a sign carver before everything became automated. I hand carved many signs. I mostly carved ( incised )text and not much relief or dimensional stuff. I still have all my hand tools. Most are the same Swiss Pfeil tools you are using. I havent carved anything in years though. Im 70 now. Id like to try something like youre doing. I normally used red cedar or redwood. In the later years sign places started using HDU ( high density urethane ) Commonly used today with CNC routers. Sometimes Honduras Mahogany. A few times other woods like pine or white cedar, even ebony once. Never tried cottonwood . Bass wood and butternut are good to carve. Usually used the cedars cause signs were generally exterior.
