In the wild bearded dragons puff their bodies full of air to float on the surface in case of flooding so this is 100% fine they’re excellent swimmers as well. I just would recommend using a proper harness with a little more slack and make sure the water is definitely warm enough or it could be fatal even 70• water temp is cold compared to 70• air temp due to rate of absorption among other things.

It's somewhat instinctual, but some individuals randomly have a high level of fear towards deep water that triggers a sort of 'freeze' mechanism that keeps them from swimming. Doesn't seem very common though, and could be trauma related or something. Most lizards I've met are at least capable of a simple 'doggy paddle + tail swishing' sort of swimming, even if they aren't very good at it

to anybody who claims animal abuse because "the beardie can drown" well theres two reasons your'e wrong. first, if hes following her with his camera that means if its in trouble he can just reach down and grab her out of the water. and second, bearded dragons have a reflex, if they are tired and completely submerged in a liquid they will puff up like a baloon and float to the surface where it can the breathe normally.

Captive and wild bearded dragons do not have the same bacteria’s, you also have to remember that we get rid of any bacteria’s from our captive bred dragons enclosure while doing a cleaning. Bearded dragons in the wild have adapted to certain bacteria’s for the bugs and greens that they eat.

This beardie is perfectly capable of swimming in waters of that depth. Every now and then it lifts its head up, takes a breath, and floats for a bit. Beardies naturally float because their lungs contain air sacs, much like birds do, and they can puff out their body. And they're not "desert" animals in the sense that their life consists of sand and sun. There's grass, trees to climb on, and plenty of water in Australia.

All of my others only get shallow baths-- for cleanliness, hydration, and shed-help. I have only ever had one dragon who liked swimming like the girl in this video.. I would never let my dragon swim by itself in a place where it could get lost like that, butyeah. The dragons' natural Scared Of Water reaction is to balloon up and doggy paddle, not to swim like this.

i dont think there is anything wrong with this video. he was not freaking out and drowning, you can see he pops his head up to breath and knows how to float. I think it was cute. I have 4 bearded dragons and my large female LOVES water. I have never taken her swimming but she loves her water dish and plays in it all the time

Will they swim underwater? And how long can they hold their breath?

Im pretty sure they don't ENJOY swimming but unlike with something like rabbits, it's not really bad for them either.

We give our 2 beardies baths 2 or 3 times a week. We put about 2 inches of water in a 10 gallon fish tank and let them play. The girl beardie is about 1/3 of the size of her brother and she will make a point to swim underwater (even underneath her brother) when she doesn't have to, the water is shallow enough for her to simply stand on all 4s and have her head above water. She definitely enjoys it. Her brother, on the other hand, just stands there. Haha

@Jymdkadett I just watched the video again, and the lizard's head is above water at least 3 times during the clip. At the beginning, when it's set in the water, and then in the middle it comes up for air, and again at the end. They are perfectly capable. If they feel like they're in danger of drowning, they can also sort of "turn off" and float without swimming.
