Probably the best care video on youtube. Some notes to the viewers: Not many people will read this but if I can help only one Beardie with this I'm happy: DON'T OVERFEED THEM! You will find a lot of crap on the internet. Nearly every page recommends feeding them 3-5 times a day as much as they want to eat which makes around 20-100 small crickets when they're young. If you do that your Bearded Dragon will get fat. It will grow fast, yes. But it won't have a very long life just like obese people. Feed them 5-10 crickets every 2 days when they're young. They will grow slower then recommended(it typically says 18 months until they're fully grown) but they'll stay healthy, slim and flexible. Feed them crickets when they're small and as soon as they're big enough, switch to locusts in an appropriate size. Achieve some variety by feeding them superworms, mealworms(very rarely!), dubia roaches and greens. Stay away from recommendations like carrots, tomatoes and any kind of fruit. Sugar is bad for them and vegetables like tomatoes take away calcium which they need for strong bones and to prevent MBD. Substrate: Red clay sand. Don't use loose fine sand, it can lead to constipation and infections. You can use reptilecarpet but it's not great. The use of red clay sand prevents constipation, infections and it will keep their nails in a good length so you don't have to cut or trim them. Temperatures in the basking area can reach up to 55°C at the highest point but give them lower platforms so they can choose a basking spot. Don't be fooled, they can deal with ground temperatures up to 80°C for a shot time, remember they're from Australia. They don't need an overly huge enclosure, 100cm x 50cm x 80cm is fine. Give them a high enclosure, especially young bearded dragons are insanely good climbers. Hit me up if you got any more questions. Not trying to sound like a know-it-all but trust me, my informations are correct. I'm just putting this out before new owners gather stupid information. Learn from the mistakes I've made.

ShakeyMaximus If your beardie is 1 year old he's not adult yet, so stick to a diet of 65% insects ans 35% greens. You can also switch to locusts, higher nutritional value and less annoying. I don't know the exact size of your dragon etc. so I can't give you a specific number. I'd say give him 15 crickets on 2 days of the week, 2 times greens per week(no fruits, not vegetables, only lettuce and dandelion salad), I'd say 4 leaves as big as the size of his head and 3-4 superworms as a treat over the week. Keep track of his weight and length amd adjust the numbers of the food then. Remember, the slimmer the dragon, the better. But no rips, no vertebra should be visible. And dust the food with calcium/vitamin powder everytime(!). As for how to feed: tweezers or just put your beardie in a box or bathtub and throw some crickets in. When you fed all(remember, NOT as much as he wants) or your beardie stops you take him out and put him back. Hope I could help.

I have a 6 year old beardie named Bob! Whenever I got her I was 14 and assumed she was a boy, but once I figured out her gender I kept the name because it was silly to me lol. She was my best friend throughout my teens and the most chill creature I have ever owned (I’ve had a lot of pets). One thing I would like to point out to a lot of people, remember Bearded Dragons will live for 10+ years. Try and anticipate whether or not you are still going to be as excited about looking after one a decade down the line. How excited you feel now, will almost always not be the case a few years down the line, whether you grow from a teenager to an adult in that time, whether or not your living arrangments will change, are you going to be willing to pay for food/electricity/husbandry for that amount of time? Many things to think about. Buying a Beardie is not like buying a Hamster which will die in 2-3 years, its a very big undertaking. Its because of this, alot of Beardies are sold or given away which is rather sad.

County animal shelters will end up with them occasionally, either from surrenders or animal control-which is how I ended up with mine. Those shelters could very well know of specialized rescues that they work with when exotics come in. Local herp societies are often associated with rescues as well.

I had a beardie as a kid, and I'm almost surprised to hear about the "tricky feeding." Even as a 10-year-old, I would dip live crickets in vitamin power and hand-feed him no problem. The cricket keeper was a bit of a hassle, yeah, but mealworms are ~super~ easy. Beardies are omnivores, yes, but you only really need to ~worry~ about the crickets/worms. Veggies are easy, because they're (hopefully) something you already have in your fridge for your own use. Just chop them up a mini bowl of salad. My beardie's absolute FAVORITE was blueberries. My dad would roll blueberries toward him, and he would snap them up. Dad called it "bowling for lizards."

My beardie loves strawberry pieces and we also feed her dandelion (both petals and greens) with fresh food grade rose petals I've harvested from wild rose bushes nearby. Their diet is super simple to supplement and enrich if you get creative and know what they can safely consume that might grow in your backyard. Our Kaida gets her salads with variety. green lettuce, collard, mustard, turnip, sometimes a little iceberg for hydration, sweet peas, bell peppers, edible florals, sometimes berries, watermelon, honeydew. Feeder staples are mealworms and super worms; treat feeders consist of wax worms, black soldier larvae, hornworms. They're easy to keep fed on your own unused or surplus produce if you're clever about it. Feeders aside they eat a lot of things we eat.

Bearded dragons are FANTASTIC pets!! I have two, and one is actually training to be the first therapy reptile in my state! Whenever I take him out with me, people are usually scared at first, will it bite, is it dangerous, etc. However after seeing how calm and friendly he is with both me and complete strangers they are quickly won over and Ususally I carry dandelion greens as a snack so they love feeding Ozzie when I bring him out with me. I have a silkback bearded dragon. I was at an expo for the first time and saw this adult female. She was just so captivating that I couldn't leave without her. She was my first pet and silkbacks are definitely not for first time pet owners. The learning curve has been steep and I don't think that the aesthetic is worth the health risk when breeding silkbacks. It makes me sad that she has such sensitive skin but then again so do I. While I may not agree with the breeding, I'm glad that she exists. She is so friendly and observant. I never thought that I would ever be able to find a reptile as cool as a bearded dragon. Great appetites, great demeanor, and great companions.

God I miss my beardie. I just had a normal yellow one and I loved him so much. Eventually I’m for sure getting another one. I got mine when he was about a year and a half old cause nobody wanted him. They all want the small cute babies and I looked at Sammy and I was like “that’s the beardie for me.” I got him for my ninth birthday. He took a chunk out of my dad’s thumb once cause he caught a grasshopper that we didn’t know if it was gonna be harmful to him. So my dad tried to get it away... that didn’t happen he chomped down. Completely accidental, but bearded dragons have one hell of a bite if they want to.

Great video! I have a 9 month old beardie and I absolutely adore him. 1 thing Clint mentioned to be a problem is the potential for smell and I can agree with that. Most of the smell problem comes from their poop. I've had great luck with using slate tile instead of substrate or carpet. Very easy to clean and sanitize and cuts down on the smell a LOT. I can also vouch for beardies being naturally potty trained. Mine very rarely does his business in his tank because I give him somewhat short but regular soaks. This cuts down the smell factor almost entirely. (Just be careful not to overdo it on bathing times/amounts because doing it too much can potentially cause respiratory problems down the road)
@DiscordianDisciple27
@DiscordianDisciple27 2 года назад
I agree with tile. I actually just buy semi-glossy floor tiles from Home Depot, and they can even be thrown in the dishwasher for a deep clean. Funny thing: When I upgraded to a Zen habitat, I put down some potting soil for something more "natural"...and my beardie just went right over to the few tiles from his old cage. He has his logs and hammocks, but honestly he prefers tile and rock over any natural substrate.

I love my two beardies so much. They’re kept in two separate enclosures in my office at home so when I’m working, I occasionally turn around to them both staring at me. It’s actually pretty darn distracting because then I have to take them out one by one to give them some love and it’s never enough. They really are the sweetest best little things. And I don’t care if people say they aren’t capable of love… I’m convinced otherwise.

Watching this with my beardie bowser who I just got a couple days ago! He’s my first reptile (actually my first pet that I bought and am caring for 100% myself) and it’s going great so far! I think a leopard gecko probably would have been easier and certainly a lot cheaper but I’m having a blast and it’s honestly a lot easier than I was expecting. People tend to over complicate their reptile care I think, with beardies you really just have to have sufficient lighting, give them some space to explore, give them a healthy diet, and give them plenty of attention and they’ll do fantastic. Bowser ate for me within an hour of bringing him home and on the second day he was eating collards out of my hand and he also tried to bite my floral print shirt that I was wearing. He’s such a cutie, I couldn’t be happier with him

As someone who still lives with their parents and four younger siblings who never let any animal out of their clutches, it’s actually a plus for me. It’s a constant reason to keep my bearded dragon all to myself. She’s a far cry from my brother’s conure let me tell you. Trust me, bites and scratches are nothing to that birds beak. We have two dogs: a yorkie and a golden retriever both terrified of a six ounce bird. I don’t blame them.

Bad idea... They hamper travel plans and require attention.... Go for a Colubrid. A mouse every couple of weeks... No need to tame, less space requirement, and easier to feed.... Dragons require attention and TLC, snakes don't.

Your videos are great and informative! Much better than a lot of other reptile channels. I do have a few suggestions, that others may have looked over. First, do not co-hab, they are very solitary animals! They will fight, and do things such as sitting ontop of the other Dragon. Which many may think is cuddling but it's actually intentionally stealing it's heat/UVB source as a form of domination. You mention UVB lights but showed a UVB bulb. You actually want a tube UVB (t8 10.0 or t5) that is 2/3rds the length of the tank. A t8 will need to be mounted inside the enclosure, which is easy with industrial velcro. A t5 can sit ontop of a mesh screen and be great. Oh, and instead of needing 3 different calcium/vitamins (as you need calcium, calcium with d3, and a multivitamin) instead you can use Repashy Calcium plus. You put it on 1 meal a day, 5 days a week and you won't need the other supplements. It's great for these guys! There is much more care obviously, but these are 3 pretty important/good tips! Awesome awesome pets! My favorite lizard is a bearded named Frankquito! Keep up the good work, love your channel!

Out rescue beardie kaida is a chaotic critter, we love her curious personality. We can leave her enclosure open with supervision and shell climb out onto the couch arm which sits below her door, then shell safely make her way to the floor and start exploring the house openly. Shes very chill with our cats and dog, though we still dont allow them to make contact without supervision. The cats and dog treat her like a weird rock that moves around lol, they basically ignore her for the most part. she also gets yard time in the sun, and with our natural environment in Oklahoma shes right at home (similar arid dryness and high sun exposure to their native Australia). I love these animals, theyre easily my favorite reptile pet at this moment. I love my leo gecko but beardies have more personality and charisma. My beardie is very comfortable with us, but my gecko is flighty and gets too anxious so i dont handle him unless i have to, because i feel like im invading his space otherwise. I respect his boundaries and leave him be, just observing fondly without much physical contact. My only bonding with the gecko is in tong feeding, but a beardie can show so much more activity.

I adopted an adult bearded dragon with extreme mbd. He can't hold his own weight and he can't lift his head. I've been working with him for two months and now he can scoot around and get onto his hamic. The previous owners had him for 3 years and didn't have any carpeting or heating bulbs. They were going to put him down if it weren't for me... He is doing a lot better and that's all I can ask for. Yes mbd can't be reversed but he can get stronger. A little love goes a long way 💗 I love your videos! You are the person who got me into reptile research and love.
@fionashepley478
@fionashepley478 5 лет назад
It’s amazing that you rescued him!! Although carpet is not a good substrate. It catches their teeth and claws and harbours bacteria. Paper towel, shelf liner, or textured tile would be much better. Generally I’d recommend something like soil for digging enrichment (for the whole substrate, half, or a dig box) but that might not be suitable for a beardie with extreme MBD.

Thanks for all of your videos, they've helped me. I got my first bearded dragon (second reptile, I had a corn snake for many years). She's 2 years old and had to be rehomed because her previous owner was moving to a place that didn't allow pets. Her previous care was mediocre, her tank was small, she was given wild caught insects, and no vitamin supplements, but she was at least given proper lights, vegetables, and was handled and socialized.

I haven't gone though all the comments, so this may have been said already, but avoid places like Petco and PetSmart because they get their reptiles, Beardes in particular, from places that are the reptile equivalent of puppy mills. Local mom n' pop places are usually going to be much better and know when its appropriate to put the animal up for sale. Getting them from a reputable breeder is even better.

@Amy_the_Lizard
@Amy_the_Lizard 4 года назад
@@TheMetalrap619 I always wash mine's butt after she poops because I'm a germophobe and don't want her trailing poop germs around her enclosure or the house. She also only poops in the shower or bath. You just pick up the lizard, and hold it vertically with it's underside exposed and facing you. Make sure the lizard can wrap their arms around you fingers, and try to support at least one of their hind feet with a finger so they feel secure. If their vent is still partially open, wait for it to close all the way. With your other hand, work up a lather with a mild soap, and rub the suds onto the lizards vent, and the area surrounding it. Then rinse the underside of the lizard with either the shower spray, the sink faucet, or if your lizard gets too freaked out with those options, place them in some clean water, swish the lizard around in there a bit, then replace with more clean water and repeat until you're confident that the soap is gone.
