The first week of OTAs for the Bears is in the books, and rookie quarterback Caleb Williams looked, well, like a rookie in the final practice of the week. Adam Studzinski and Dan Wiederer discuss Williams' growing pains, which are to be expected at this point. After all, Williams is facing a Bears defense that's returning nine starters from 2023. Meanwhile, rookie receiver Rome Odunze didn't participate in much of practice as he continues to nurse a hamstring ailment. We aren't panicking about that ... yet. There were also a few notable players missing from this (optional) practice Thursday. Wiederer explains why he's keeping a close eye on some of those absences.

“It may take until week 9 to take that leap, it may take until week 15 to make that leap”. This is moving the goalpost though, he’s supposed to be a generational talent who is a plug in to this team and instantly they are in the playoffs. That is what generational talents do. If they don’t do that, they aren’t generational talents. I’m rooting for Caleb and certainly not saying this indicative of his future performance this season, but we can’t be moving the goalposts now that he’s our guy. He’ll get better, but a generational talent is going to get better very quickly all summer long. It’s not going to be a 6-11 season or worse where we go “well we had a rookie qb”. That’s moving the goalposts from the entire reason we drafted him and moved on from JF1. And again, gonna reiterate for people who can’t read, I’m rooting for Caleb.

CJ Stroud has just begun his second year. Relax on thinking he’s good. I guess people forget Mack Jones.. Caleb is going to be fine. The D is the easiest D to learn. I’d hope they’d be winning most days early on.

I actually feel good about him struggling a bit. I’d be more worried if he was torching are defense from that start.

I'd much rather he was torching the defense. That was never my expectation, but if it occurred, it would be pretty amazing. At the end of the day, he's a rookie. A mega-talented rookie, but still a rookie. He has a LOT to learn about his offense, his teammates, the pro game, opposing personnel, coordinators, schemes, etc. He's going to make a lot of mistakes, especially in his first year.

All the people who never played sports at a high-level, not understanding that the best thing that you could one for the kiddos him to have a hard time with a Defense every single day to make him better. Exactly, that was the entire conversation before, during, and immediately after the draft.
@STEEPPOW
@STEEPPOW 22 дня назад
Do you realize that going against a top level defense and him making mistakes as what’s going to make him better? Do you know that when you lift weights, you grow from lifting until failure? The Bears have arguably the best secondary in the league. This is exactly what you want him to be going against every day, the best secondary with a chip on their shoulder. Why do you think MJ was on everyone to practice so hard and why do you think every player on the team fulfilled their potential? Brutal, vicious, ugly practices. You didn’t see it until the last dance, but if you had people watching every bulls practice, you would have seen rookies get embarrassed to near tears. Hall of Famer’s like Tony Kukoc, getting his can whipped every day and practice until he could barely take it. You see where it got him people need to chill.

@@STEEPPOW read through it again. I’m not saying this isn’t what he needs to grow. We’re talking specifically about moving the goalposts to “he may not develop until end of season” by Dan in this podcast. He was brought in to be a generational talent week 1. We can’t already be making excuses that he isn’t going to be NFL ready in his first season. Yeah, I expect this is exactly what he needs to grow as a QB. But that’s what we have to highlight, not “it may take until week 15 for him to take a leap”. Expectation is that he will develop this summer and the bears will be a playoff team. Not, one bad practice and we already start making excuses for missing the playoffs.

@@mcfact1827 Yea, but that is the media talking. They have been hyping him to no end and now they are back tracking. I have been a fan since 1979 and have seen this many times. The hype, backtrack and bashing gets old. Whether this guy pans out or not is 50/50 at best. Nobody can predict what these QB prospects are going to do. A big part of drafting him was talent but it was also to reset the salary at QB. I haven't and will not expect the Bears to make the playoffs. If they do, great, but I wouldn't bet on it. The over/under is 8.5 games. That tells the unbiased story. I just hope to see improvement and promise as the season progresses. The media are eh.

Maybe the bad practice is reminding fans that Caleb is human, will make mistakes, and may not even reach their outrageous expectations for him. If so, perhaps that is a good thing.

huh? Neither of those guys has massive expectations on them from the start. Fields didn't have any expectations beyond improving his own abilities until last season- and he ultimately failed at both.
