Really, they are paying respect to their peers, Beastie Boys came out at the same time Run DMC and dudes like that. BB are one of the groups that paved the way, a founding sound of hiphop that gets downplayed too often as a novelty act just because they were white. They had a unique sound that no could really bite, except trippy bands like Dassen 3 from Japan, that was heavily inspired by them.

@mifune9634
@mifune9634 16 дней назад
Speaking as an 80s/90s NYC kid (born in '73), it was a bit of mixed bag. We were definitely at the epicenter of multiple influential artistic and social movements, but it was a far more dangerous place back then. It's hilarious hearing present-day politicians talk about crime in NYC being out of control. Seriously, look at historic statistics concerning violent crime in NYC. I'd been robbed at gunpoint twice before I turned 18, and most of my friends were similarly robbed at least once. My brother was literally robbed by a group of machete wielding bodybuilders. I shit you not. Haha! So, growing up here had its ups and downs.
@dre3k78
@dre3k78 16 дней назад
@@mifune9634 Absolutely true. All the talk about NY or California in the media today is all politically driven and don't match with the actual numbers. Go back to NY in the 70s-80s and some parts of it looked like a bomb went off. LA in the 80-90s was covered in smog and was the murder capital of the country. Today these cities are miles better and safer they they used to be. Sure they are more expensive but inflation is a constant over time everywhere.

whats a hipster? counter culture? Just part of the evolution (subjectively good or bad)
@Remembering00
@Remembering00 6 лет назад
"Hipster" has the connotation of "counter culture lite." The stereotypical hipster is a young person from a wealthy background who embraces a Bohemian lifestyle for the sake of appearances. It's always been cool to be "alternative," so now we've finally reached the point where the alternative has been fully corporatized. In the past 25 years, young society has begun to place so much value on enjoying "obscure culture" (non-mainstream music, art, fashion, film, etc.) that the obscure is now peddled to us by the major entertainment companies who have finally caught on. Knowing that young people want to appear as though they have refined and unusual tastes, the corporate culture machine has adapted, . The result is that nowadays, having refined and unusual tastes is not only easy, but encouraged by mainstream society. Prior to this corporatization, a young person giving off a counter culture vibe would have had to put a lot of effort into it; being a fan of obscure culture was difficult, because that culture typically existed outside of the main lines of cultural distribution. Such a person would have had to find underground music shows (that aren't advertised on Facebook), to frequent second-hand record shops (that are rare and located only in hard-to-find ungentrified neighborhoods in cities), and to get all of their clothes at second-hand stores (back when that was a very weird thing to do if you weren't destitute). This weeded out the people who wanted to be alternative just for the sake of appearing alternative, so that the only people left were those who were truly willing to devote their entire lives to chasing the culture that they enjoyed. Now, all you have to do is head to Urban Outfitters and download music on iTunes to become a "hipser." Your app will tell you when your favorite underground band is playing a show several months in advance, and that second-hand record shop is now located next to a Starbucks in Williamsburg. The result is that anyone can be "alternative" now, and most of the people who embrace that image are actually not very interested in obscure culture, but are simply consuming whatever culture is fed to them by the mainstream (which now happens to be "counter culture lite"). I'm not saying that I embrace this view, I'm just explaining it.

Yep! The term originated in the Jazz Age/1940's and it definitely had a "cool" connotation for a long time after that. It basically just meant "someone who is hip." I remember Elaine once called Kramer a "hipster doofus" on Seinfeld. Since that was the '90s, "hipster" itself simply referred to the fact that he wore vintage clothes and looked like a cool Bohemian-type, rather than being derisive (hence the need to add "doofus"!). It's interesting that you bring up Kerouac, because he coined the term "Beat Generation" (of which he was a member). The term "beatnik" came about later on and had a negative connotation much in the same way that "hipster" does nowadays, in that it referred to "posers," "try-hards," "Bohemians-lite," etc. Kerouac rejected the term and referred to himself and his contemporaries simply as "beats." Anyway, from what I'm reading online, the term "hipster" gained a mocking/condescending connotation around 2000-2003 when it was used to refer to the "Bohemians-lite" who were gentrifying Williamsburg at the time and emptying out thrift shops and used record stores using their parents' credit cards. Interesting stuff!

Like a lot of people, I didn't think the Beastie were all that talented until I heard 'Ill Communication' on a friend's car stereo. I had no idea that they played instruments on their own songs,....I was impressed to say the least.

I discovered the Boys when my sons were teens, and I LOVED them, never stopped and so glad I can see & hear them to this day. If I'm feeling down or need to do some boring work, I turn up the BB & let them light me up! Their whole thing is so good, anyone of any age can get it.

One of their most underrated tracks... Hadn't listened to this in years and it really brought me back...The Beastie boys were just a different level because it was about making music...Not just coming up with a hook to get radio play like the no talent garbage of today...RIP Yauch

I think this may be my favorite Beastie song. I'm 39, I remember when License to Ill came out. They were bad boys and blew up huge. Grunge hit in 91 and the BB's remained relevant, becoming part of the "alternative" music scene in college, which included hip hop. I was more of a metal guy but I always thought the BB's were cool. looking back, they were just so unique. their music is just pure fun and good times. that is why they are so loved. God bless u MCA. rest in peace Adam.
