Didn't see anyone mention...this was actually recorded live on MTV. Amazing fact that has kinda been lost to history.

They say that this was a live, one take, and no sampling. It was three on the mic and a dj creating the music. This song and this video was supposed to be a marker for what it used to be back in the day. Even by today's standards.....this is cutting edge.

Can't beat them in their time? Their time was from their 1st hip hop album,LICENSE TO ILL 1986 and they continued making music until Yauchs death in 2012. Their careers as M.C.s lasted through 3 decades. Not many can claim that. If not for the death of M.C.A they'd still be dropping science today. RIP M.C.A Peace and Love ya'll.

I'm 50 and by most accounts I grew up as a metalhead but I also grew up exposed to all the music as it was starting in the 80s. I listen to every Beastie boys song when it came out. Their music was so unique their videos were so unique. I had no idea how classic a lot of the old school music would become until many years into the future.

You know what's funny, I knew them when they opened for the Misfits and others at CBGBs (thought i'd never say it, man I miss that place). But they would also come up to the Fever in the Bronx. You may want to check them out live, or at least live with Sabotage... at least you'd see them play.

IceT, Beastie Boys, House of Pain and Cypress Hill brought a lot of metal heads in contact with rap and hip hop. They opened up the metal and rock festival circuits for hip hop artists and that brought even more variety to our ears. And yeah man, from personal experience, metalheads tend to have the widest musical pallet out of anyone. Most metal festivals here these days are part rock, part metal, part hip hop while also having a House/EDM podium to the side and often even has some more generally popular musicians in the lineup. And metal itself is incredibly varied to begin with.

"Real hip hop at its finest." You are correct, sir. They didn't break any norms. They did it pure. They were there when hip hop first blew up in New York, they were part of that scene, and they stuck with that core principle going forward. Sometimes they were a punk band, but when they did rap, they were Old School.

A lot of people don't know how much the Beastie boys had to do with early rap/hip hop and specifically Def Jam records. LL Cool J will tell you that it was Ad Rock who got him signed, and DMC talks about all the new ground that RUN DMC broke with the Beastie Boys by their side. They basically lived with RUN-DMC in the early days of rap. They traveled the world together, they drank together, they partied together, they wrote songs and rapped together. They weren't three white Jewish kids who rapped. They were three young New Yorkers who loved, and will always love hip hop. And they still hold the flag high for Hip Hop music and culture.

I was a prog, classic rock, metal fan and musician in the '80s, not really into hip-hop, and all I saw of them was "Fight for Your Right" on MTV. I thought they were silly, and that was it. Like a band that was invented for a bad '80s teen party movie. Fast forward to the early '90s, now I'm into sludge, noise, and stoner metal, and these two girls me and a friend had just met went to put on Paul's Boutique at their place. They mentioned Beastie Boys, and I was like "Aw maaaaan . . ." A short conversation ensued where they basically said "This is different-you need to hear this, and we wanna dance." They were very cool (and hot) so "Yeah, yeah, alright." 2 tracks in, and I was severely impressed. First side ends, girl picks the record up, flips it, looks over to me like "well?" I'm like "Oh no-yeah, yeah-side 2 for sure!" By the time it ended, I was just stunned, like "These guys are the freakin' Beatles of hip-hop." I'll put it this way: That record and those girls had me dancing the whole time- *and I DON"T DANCE!* lol. What a great night that was. Like a baptism, really.
