+Kompayaa It's been sample or covered over 25 times and IMO exposed the masses to J Dilla. J Dilla, arguably one of hip hop's most influential music makers paved the way for conscious rap and r&b. There's not a modern hip hop producer whose work wasn't influenced by Dilla (he's like the James Brown of hip hop) and this song helped solidify the foundation of deep crate digging for samples. IMHO
@JustinRM20
@JustinRM20 8 лет назад
Runnin' introduced me to J DIlla. The lyrics and the beat fit so well with each other. This kind of showed me how far some producers search to sample things, which is really great, because it allows for these sick beats to be made.
@Crazytaru1
@Crazytaru1 7 лет назад
This song was actually played a lot on the radio in chicago (1995), so for that reason alone I feel like lots of people heard this song who were alive back then. But nobody really realized the importance of producers back then (IMO) I feel like pharcyde took all the credit for the beat (not intentionally, just by default because most hiphop fans didnt recognize the importance of producers). Later on, with slum village, there was internet articles describing Jay Dee as "the producer everyone's heard but that nobody actually knows about." So, many people went on living without really knowing about Jay Dee, until the 2000s with Slum Village (and even this, Jay Dee started to become a little famous only until the second album). And in between all this, Dilla didn't get the recognition for most of his stuff like tribe called quest beats he did, etc. I agree though, I was 10 years old when Runnin came out, and I fell in love w this beat, man (especially the saxaphone part).

Hey Sandurz, To answer your question of where the bassline came from and to help educate other music enthusiasts and producers :), It came from the guitar sample. He used time stretch in his mpc to time stretch the 2nd bars bassline of the main 2 bar guitar loop (aka he time stretched one bar to fit into two bars) He then put a low pass filter on it to cut out the guitar and extract the bass. So whenever you hear that bass come in, it's from that main guitar riff sample. It''s just filtered/ mixed/ and edited in such a way that it sounds foreign to think that it could have came from that same sample. And that my friends is the genius of Dilla

Man, the fact that all of us beat heads are like dying to figure out that bassline sample, is all you need to know about the greatness of Jay Dee. Was just listening to the Pharcyde record, that bass sample on the 3rd verse sounds like he's heavily side chaining (as it sounds like the bass is dipping up and down like a roller coaster). My only theory is that Dilla played that bass part live on his Moog, side chained that with the kick, etc.
