In this video, I discuss some things to look for when buying beater cars. This is not a comprehensive list so I recommend bringing a mechanic if you are uncomfortable with the process. Be realistic. You are not buying a new car, so be respectful to sellers and expect the same from them.
GENERAL CHECKS
1. Search VIN for Salvage Records and Open Recalls:
www.nicb.org/v...
nhtsa.gov/recalls
2. Research online car forums for known issues on your specific year, make, and model
3. Ask the seller about maintenance history and existing problems. Some will provide Carfax reports to prospective buyers
EXTERIOR
1. Check for major rusting in the rear quarter panels and roof
2. If you suspect the car has been in accident(s), check for VIN stickers on all panels, mismatched paint, or aftermarket parts near area of impact
3. Commonly failed inspection items: worn wiper blades and burnt bulbs
ENGINE BAY
1. Check all fluids for level, color, and odor. Watch for any attempts to cover up leaks
2. Check belts and hoses for rot, cracks, and fraying
3. Check for emissions control tampering/removal if your state requires inspection
INTERIOR
1. Check for unusual vehicle odors such as gasoline fumes seeping in
2. Check for dash warning lights, attempts to hide/suppress them, and odometer tampering
3. Check that air bags and seat belts are present and working properly
WHEELS AND SUSPENSION
1. Check tire tread depth, wear pattern, and signs of rot or damage
2. Check brake pads and rotors if possible
3. Budget for replacement, many owners won't fix these before selling
UNDERCARRIAGE
1. Check for extensive rusting on the frame, subframe, and other structural areas
2. Check for attempts to hide and cover up such rusting with undercoating
3. Check for fluid and exhaust leaks
TEST DRIVE
1. Check for noise during both low and high speed driving
2. Check for the car pulling to one side during driving
3. Check for brake pedal vibration during hard braking
