after all these games, Thab could walk into a smoky, grimy Japanese bar and pull up to a table of the most surly, stubborn old Japanese men playing mahjong for 50 years and completely wipe the table with them. "Get ronned" as he walks out, some confusing amount of yen richer
Somehow, you make it interesting to watch gameplay from a decades-old video game, from a foreign culture, in a language I don't understand, based on a game I've never played. And yet, you make it enjoyable throughout. Thank you Thab 😊
Hey man, I just want you to know, I still think this series is super sick. I’m still working my way through a few in the backlog but I always pop in every week to see what you’ve been through lately. I appreciate your work man, and I’m sure all your other regular viewers feel the same, take care.
A Chinese exchange student in high school taught me how to play Mahjong. What all these games are really missing is just how FIRED UP folks get about it. There's a lot more excited yelling and wild gesticulating with both arms than any of these games would imply.
this game looks amazing, I love that such a simple game is used as a vehicle for what seems like such an elaborate and riveting story, there needs to be more games like this
@1:45 Oh wow, I didn't know anybody else had ever done the "memorizing the backs of cards/tiles" cheat besides me (I mean I had assumed because it's a fairly obvious trick, but I had never heard of an instance of it happening). When I was a kid, my family was REALLY into board games and cards. Which sounds cool, until you learn that my parents hated all the fun games, and all games for kids so it kinda sucked. Anyway, I ended up putting teeny-tiny scratches, tiny bends, folded&unfolded corners (etc.) on the card backs and memorizing all of them over time. Because cheating is kinda fun when there are no stakes! Of course, you can't win _every damn time_ without it being suspicious. Eventually they all realized I was cheating, but they couldn't figure out how (and because I didn't actually have to *_do_* anything, there was nothing to "catch" me doing)... so they decided to start cheating too. Now the rules are "you're allowed to cheat, but if you get caught you lose", and family game night is way more fun 😂🤗
The 90s, where unlocking fun cheats to enhance a game were worthy unlockables. Turok set the standard on the N64, and GoldenEye quickly followed. Diddy Kong Racing gave you a random cheat at the end of the credits, Mortal Kombat Trilogy and Killer Instinct Gold were filled with secret codes, Banjo-Kazooie had the Cheato books, everything from Midway, Rare, and Acclaim was chock full with cheats. It was only a matter of time to get a Mahjong game for cheaters.
Because it was on your list when you selected the next game, it reminded me that Turok 3 is an N64 game. I only became aware that this existed a couple weeks ago (because there’s a remaster or something coming out). It’s crazy because I owned the first two and was aware of Rage Wars, but I never knew Turok 3 was an N64 game at all. It did come out pretty late in the console’s life so maybe that’s why, but I was still shocked. I could see there being a Turok 3 but I would have bet all the money that it was in on a different platform.
I play it from time to time. Good bit of fun with the upgrades, and bonus vehicles. Pretty sure there's like 4 tracks though 😂. Different weather and flipping out makes it feel a little different. I wonder if it'll work well for him - it's a notoriously hard game to emulate, and I think one of the few games with some everdrive quirks
I like that this challenge made you enjoy mahjong, and while mahjong soul is a bit... well. It is likely the easiest and quickest way to play some real games.
For these Japanese games have you ever considered using a screen translator like MORT (MonkeyHead's OCR Realtime Translator) or any other OCR? You could still capture the gameplay as untranslated but have what you see have the overlaid translations.
The cover art for this game is pretty cool. I bought this game on a trip to Japan because I thought it might be some sort of street fighter type game, like Ricer City Ransom or something. Boy was I disappointed when I looked it up and found it to be a Mahjong game. lol
Seven Mahjong games. Man, I don't think I could bring myself to play through even one of them. I tried to learn the game while playing the Yakuza games but I just couldn't force myself to be interested enough in it to actually play it properly. Seven hours of Mahjong is seven hours too long in my opinion. Respect to Thab for having the patience and skill to play through these games.
