The reason for the timer on team choice is likely because they just ported it from the arcade, which would want you on a timer to encourage more quarters or so you can't sit there and take up the machine while others are waiting.

*Pro tip:* If you throw deep passes, the QB will wind up for the long throw. However, if you jump with *B,* all throws happen _immediately_ when you're in the air. So basically every pass should go *B+A* rather than just *A!* The one possible downside of this is that you're more likely to fumble if you're hit in midair, but because the throw is so fast, that basically never happens!

I still remember 5-1-4 UP for infinite turbo and 0-3-2 LEFT for fast turbo running. It would give the CPU the cheat also, but it was better than nothing.

At a fiends a long time ago. Played this game for hours trying to beat it. Played the entire season undefeated and the first game of the playoffs got demolished by the rubber banding. Game over. Good times haha

With the thumbnails I wish someone could do like a huge painting of you with every main character you have used on every game as a conmemoration that you did this challenge. Seeing American Football players, pokemon, bomberman, Mahjong tiles, Pachinko, the chibi baseball players, the cars,Superman. It would be funny.

The timed team select is an artifact of the arcade cabinet era. Applying time pressure to all steps of the game makes it so that 1) players don't hog the cabinet without feeding more coins and 2) the circumstance where players feed coins, but for whatever reason have to leave during team selection, then the game would proceed and get to game over/back to insert coin to start screen before the next players show up with coins in their pockets!

John Elway and the Broncos actually did play the falcons in the '98 superbowl! Nice!

American Football games were surprisingly popular in the UK in the 90s. Mostly thanks to the early Mega Drive Madden games getting such great reviews. And I loved them. NFL Blitz is such a great game. I had it on the Dreamcast and playing with three friends was among the most fun I’ve ever had with video games.

Okay but when Denver picks up Lamar Jackson in Free Agency and the Offensive Coordinator just calls Da Bomb every play next season I am blaming you. LMAO

Having a timer in arcades means games going faster and having an estimated time between each coin to calculate income of the arcade machine. Just doest makes sense to keep timers in the n64 version

There was a skating rink our school would take trips to frequently in middle school and they had the arcade version of this game there. Me and my buddy would save all our money and blow it all playing this game the entire day that we were at the skating rink. This game was way too fun and addicting for its own good. Great times...

I can't believe you also settled on "Da Bomb" as the best play in the game....... And even more crazy that you came to that conclusion using it to RUN THE BALL! I run Da Bomb constantly against the CPU but always go for the hailmary pass. Only running the ball when forced. Crazy it's so OP that you can run only that play as strictly a rushing or passing play and still come out on top.

You missed some good strats with this game. If you complete a pass to the same player three times in a row or get 3 tackles for a loss in a row you go on fire and have unlimited turbo. Also after a touchdown if you hold down Z, B and A it does an onside kick and it’s not too hard to get the ball right back.

I always loved how when you were playing with a friend, not only would everyone always have infinite turbo, but also there would be about a billion hits after the play is down in the background lol. Would always just keep going until the screen changed.

I played a later version of this on Dreamcast. I exploited how, in it, you could easily pass the ball down the entire field. :)

If you don't already know Tim Kitzerow is the announcer. He announced in a lot of the arcade style sports titles.

First thing I check when you post a video is the length of the video. Some games are so basic that I can't believe you could stretch it out to 11 minutes.... this was one of those times. But you did a good job doing it.

The time limit on the team selection is something left over from the Arcade version, because normally you need a time limit there.

The nothing more "late 90s gaming" than rubber banding. It makes some games unenjoyable but it was a necessary evil for single kid families and the like.

The time limit to choose a team was a feature required for the arcade version to speed up the time between quarter drops. Not removing it from the console port was a really odd choice though.

I never got why they did the time limit thing on console but if you ever stood in line to play blitz at the arcade you are thank ful for anything that speeds up the game

Hey Thab, love the series! I was thinking for some of these sports games (since they're numerous, repetitive in nature, and not particularly difficult or lengthy) it would be a fun twist to take a heavy underdog team to the championship. Just a thought, keep up the good work ;-)

After discovering this challenge about 2 months ago, i finally watched all episodes! And i mean all of them. Tbh when I first heard of it I thought it was a fun idea but also was scared thinking "i hope the guy playing isn't just an annoying streamer", fortunately, Thab is a cool guy, i'm really enjoying it! One game I'm particularly waiting to see is Mystical Ninja Starring Goemon, it was one of my favorites back in the day. Keep up the good work!

This game was a college dorm favorite in the late 2000s. The n64 version too!

When you get to play Madden 99, I had a trick when playing that game that you could just abuse using the Halfback Pass play and end up winning with 100+ points every time.

I've always hated sports games, but this one is just so bonkers that it was an everyday event at our afterschool gathering at good ole' R-Doobey's house.

Can safely say this is the first time I've heard of this game and I did go to arcades with my mum during the early 2000s.

I remember being gifted this game by my sister's boyfriend. He was definitely trying to get in good with the family. I also remember doing my best to find the fun in this game but ultimately I never liked sports games, still don't. Though I admit I did manage to enjoy a couple afternoons with the other boys because I owned it.

I wasn’t and still aren’t a football fan really but I had this game as a kid and I absolutely loved it lol

Glad that the first football game of the challenge is from by far the best football series on the console. There are few things more satisfying than dogpiling most of your team onto a poor, unfortunate soul during the end-of-quarter transition. I'm still bummed about the 2012 reboot, where the NFL had them get rid of late hits - _inexcusable._

The CPU is a bit tougher on hard and disallows easy QB runs, but I believe the screen pass play could exploit the opponent by hitting the receiver on a screen pass and then throwing down field to another open receiver or instead running to the open field after the screen pass. When I was in elementary school I played this with my best friend and he exploited this tactic every game, and I couldn’t win until I started either knocking down his deep route receiver on the scrimmage line and blitzing his receivers rather than the qb.. then he couldn’t win and rage quit. :)

Man I'm looking forward to a non-sports, non-racing, GOOD N64 game. It was such a tease almost getting Zelda at the end (although with a random number generator there is nothing close about it I guess)

Waiting for Hybrid Heaven. Weird as hell, but very ambitious. Good memories as a kid having to restart the whole game over again and again because I didn't have a memory pack to save my game, lol.

The only way you can onside kick is if you do the extra point though. Gotta think of strategy. Onside kicks in this game ALWAYS yielded a fumble frenzy and a good chance of getting the ball back.

Great now I am caught up with the videos, now I have to be tortured by waiting for your next videos, I heard about this on one of those weird gaming story videos and I thought it would be great to check out even if I never even played an N64 game. When I played this game back in the day, I had no idea how the rules of football worked, so I just threw Hail Marys on first down and body slammed players.
