I was lucky enough to have a Sega CD, but I only rented this game when it was current. I remember looking for comic book covers wondering if I could win the contest mentioned in the manual, but mostly I remember playing the Mysterio levels so I could play Spider-Man pinball. I did pick this game up about 8 years ago and enjoy it for its expanded world over the Genesis version and it’s truly of the time soundtrack. The Sega CD always felt like the future. CD quality music, cut scenes, 3D add on stages, deeper and more mature storylines. Some of the multimedia features feel so cheesy now, but seeing these things in action for the first time was magical!

I said that to a young retro collector the other day, he had one of those amazing collections in glass cabinets, and I said something to him. I said I have something in my humble collection you will never get you hands on.. he said what? I said actual memories of playing these in the 90s as a 10 year old.

My 10th birthday was in 1993, and it was an exciting time in my childhood. We had some primitive PC games when my uncle gave us his old Atari (I think it was an ST model), but no consoles, and I remember visiting friends or cousins that had SNES would be special times because we'd all get together and play Mario Kart or Street Fighter II, and then we'd go outside and spend the rest of the day rollerblading or riding our bicycles around the neighborhood. Not a care in the world, just good clean fun.

I’m with you sir. Being born in 81 I got to live through the incredible and fun evolution of the video game renaissance. When you add ninja turtles, thundercats, silver hawks, voltron, transformers etc to the mix there’s no words for how special that time was. I still have all my stuff from my he man castles to my original technodrome still in the box to all my star wars ships I’ve been wanting to make a RU-vid video for people like you who would get it.

My dad swears we hid an extra transformers (the green construction equipment that turned into a giant robot) I think it was called devistator. We said he bought 2 at Kay b's. I still can't find the unopened one. Hoping it's in his attic.

Right?... i grew up using old computers in the 80s. And if you were grew up in the 80s and 90s, then video games were a very big deal. But my parents. They didn't like video games, their excuse besides the price was that they "just didn't like the noises". My father still gets under my skin with how low tech and stuck in the past he has to be. I didn't even have a color TV in my house until i was like 12. In 1992. I had to figure out how to get everything myself, paper routes and mostly waiting for things to become obsolete. My older brother would sometimes bring things home. And for a couple years there was an arcade in town. But i otherwise had to be that one poor kid who had nothing to brag about, with hand me down clothes and bikes i build from parts i collected from scrap. Of course i miss those years, even still, it was a great time, back in those days. But it could have been so much greater. I hope some people realize how good they had it.

Spider-Man vs. The Kingpin was a great way to gauge the capability of a system. Started with the Master System version, got the Mega Drive version where it actually looked like Spidey now, and then the Mega-CD version with its soundtrack, cutscenes that replaced walls of text and so many levels to explore and even comic covers to collect.

I had only 3 games for my Sega CD growing up. The Sewer Shark, Jurassic Park and...Spider-Man Vs. The Kingpin. The open-world, the immersive cutscenes and the INCREDIBLE music are something I will never forget. To this day, I will occasionally listen to the soundtrack on its own. It was the first game that I can remember that made you feel like Spider-Man. The wall-crawling and web-slinging were pretty amazing and fluid for their time and you got to tangle with all the classic foes. Doc Ock, the Lizard, Sandman, Venom, etc.
@anonamatron

Yeah, this type of Spider-Man era/feeling is what I want from the movies. I don't want Electro's whole origin story, I just want Spider-Man to go take him down randomly while he's robbing a bank or something. I want an older Spider-Man who has already beaten these guys numerous times. There'd need to be a main villain of course, but let's say the main story is Spider-Man vs. Kingpin. Why not throw in a few scenes of Spidey taking down other guys too? They barely need to impact the story, it just shows a day in the life of your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man.

Sonic CD + Batman Returns on our 10th birthday (I have a twin brother) was so cool! And then it also has one of my fav games of all times: the only official ENG release of Hideo Kojima's Snatcher. Thank you for sharing your memories. Your childhood was basically my dream. My family even extended family isnt a gaming family. I'm basically the odd one out when it comes to the topic of video games. Thankfully though through online gaming I added a gaming family to my life since 2015.

I'm the weird duck as well. My brother is all outdoorsy and my parents looked at video games as if they were nerdy and uncool. I was the dweeb and my family never encouraged my love of games so I completely get it.

These videos definitely remind me of Christmas with my family and getting Sega games for Christmas.

I love seeing Mikey in the videos. His New York dialect, his skills and he seems so chill being on camera. I knew an older kid in day-care that was several years older and beat games like nothing. I guess being young and naieve I thought beating a game was hard but he would pop something in and wouldn't quit till it was done. I admire all the Sega CD stuff cause I never had it back then.

Sega CD was one of my all time favorites too! I remember beating Ghalleon in Lunar 2 on Thanksgiving. Crazy the moments that stand out in our lives.

I remember getting my first sega cd in 94' all my friends were so jealous. I remember it coming with sewer shark! I hated that game but forced myself to beat it cause the experience was mind blowing at the time!! Tomcat alley! Another classic i loved!!!

This really was a special moment in time that your Dad captured from the Sega CD era. I really miss those simpler times of being wowed by CD video game technology. 1993 was a Sega CD Christmas for me as well. My family got the Sega CD in the summer of '93 for my older brother's birthday and it came with Sewer Shark but it was Christmas of '93 when we got several more games for it including Final Fight CD, Bram Stoker's Dracula and Joe Montana's NFL Football. Funny enough, even though Sewer Shark had a ton of FMV, I was somehow more impressed that I could watch scenes from the Bram Stoker's Dracula movie in the Sega CD game, even though the scenes from the movie in the game didn't have any sound for some reason. I think it was just the idea that I could watch clips from a major movie running off a CD that blew my mind.

Yes! Watching movie scenes like in Bram Stoker’s Dracula or Cliffhanger was mind blowing back then
