Between 1994 and 1995, Dad documented our quest to find Sega Master System games. The console was dead at retail and in clearances. It was a JOYOUS time to be a game collector.

Your dad was retro before retro became a thing. I hope you're able to share classic games that you grew up with, with your daughter just like your dad was able to.

The story of he Sega Master System here in Australia couldn't be more different. In the late 80s, computers such as the Commodore 64 and Amiga were bigger than consoles. There were ads on TV for Segas and Nintendos, so obviously people were buying them. But it was a rarity amongst my friends. Then Super Mario Bros. 3 (and the movie, the Wizard) hit in 1990 and the NES started to take off. But not long after, Sega released the Master System II (compatible with the Master System, just cost reduced) for $99 in time for Christmas and that was it. Every second kid in this country got one. It overtook the NES by a long shot and was the final nail in the Commodore 64's coffin. If you owed a Master System here, you had a stack of kids in your neighbourhood and school that you could trade games with. With no Internet, I just assumed it was the same in Japan (given Sega was a Japanese company) and the US. It was only years later that I heard it was a failure in those territories.

same here in NZ. Sega was massive.

This is what I often read, that Master System was in Australia even stronger than in Europe. The system became that strong with the Alex Kidd (later additional Sonic) Bundle. In the time, when I bought the MS1 with Hang On, it was a uncommon system (same situation for NES here; much more people played C64, Amiga). In 1990 with Master System 2 and the new other systems (Mega Drive, Gameboy) the consoles came more to the focus of most people, and that brought also benefit for Master System sales, because it was cheap. And even in the time of "16-Bit Wars" there was a strong base of Master Systems, in 1993 it was still the most succesfull system (installed base) in Europe.

Incredible dad you have. I share the same emotions toward the sega master system. There was something different and special about the games, the boxes, the marketing.

This video brings joy to my heart. My first system was the sega master system in Christmas 1986 (age 5), I asked my dad for Nintendo for Christmas but the sega was cheaper and he thought it looked better. We played missile defense 3d and double dragon for hours. All my friends enjoyed coming to my house since I was the only one of us with one.

Christmas of 86' I was given a master system.i was 6 years old.it came with hang on and Safari hunt.i also got world grand prix.i never saw a video game before that day .there was an arcade we occasionally stopped at and pole position was the machine I always went to.im guessing the reason I got a Sega and not an NES was that world grand prix resembled pole position.i loved it and eventually got a genesis and then the adapter base.thank for sharing your awesome videos

It's just lovely and wonderful to see this. MS was my first system, and it took me more than one year, that I was able to buy it (my parents did not like gaming, they never supported that). It was strong in Europe, but I know about situation in North America, where it was dead in 1991, maybe 1992... in Japan already as early as 1988... Bomber Raid was the last game, released shortly after Mega Drive launch... Other guys had their Amiga or PC Systems and hundreds of (copied) games... and I was proud to see my just slowly growing palette of original MS games. I was so interested in the hardware... I remember the time, when Western publishers like U.S. Gold or Tekmagic started to support the system (throughout the first years all the games came from Sega Japan). It was a system with a really long lifetime... 1986 there came some imports from Japan; it was for freaks, console gaming was almost dead; 1987 launch in some European countries. There was a slowly growth til 1989 (similar to North America), with maybe 40-50 games at all; but in 1990/91 the system became strong and hundreds of more games available. The EU launch of Mega Drive (Genesis) in fall 1990 was not the end of Master System, I think it was the kickoff point, when just more gamers decided to play video games (the years 1985-1990 were "home computer years"). 1990 came also the Gameboy to Europe, all this was an increase for console gaming, which brought millions of gamers even to the - then four or five year old - Master System. 1991 = Sonic, Castle of Illusion... the golden era of video games and Master System. ❤

I remembered when I was around 8 years old when on holidays my family went to the states and my brother and I got a Sega Genesis, back in Mexico on the biggest retailer in town there was that console with the checkered box and the Sega logo that back then was no mystery for us, there was no that much games but there was something about the master system that we needed so bad... Fast forward I didn't got the master system but some classmate did so I'm remembered playing with him, talking about Sega stuff that was no big deal here...

I remember my parents being shocked by the collector scene when they sold some ps1 games so we could have a ps2 for xmas and they were selling oddworld for 99p bid thinking they may get 15 at most. Ended up making 80 on it and they contacted the seller to ask why he bid so much on 1 game and the seller said "you dont know what you got do you? Your collection is rare and highly sought after, make sure nobody does you over on these and ask a good price" he was kind enough to let us know and recommended we halt selling them until we researched it so we wouldnt be under sold. We got the ps2 that year and a bunch of games with it and eventually i found those old games again in charity shops and built my ps1 collection back to full force

I had a Sega Master System and loved it! I would get into arguments with my friends, who all had Nintendos. Obviously, the SMS had better graphics! I had to use my paper route money to get games, so I was very picky. I think my favorite was R-type. I ended up getting into skateboards and other things, but I have fond memories of my SMS. haha

"I called all over the united states kid"... ur dad was a national treasure. Bro said "the master system with a few games isn't worthy of my only child!! HE DESERVES THEM ALLLLLLL!!!" I really noticed something in one of the other Xmas videos where ur mom got ur dad a western framed painting that he seemed less than enthused by lol, and in that vid I realized that once u were old enough to really emote and comprehend what dad was able to procure for u in those days. At a certain point Xmas was more about seeing how happy, surprised, greatful ect u were and got! Xmas became all about seeing ur face light up and THAT was his/mom's gift that made up for any lackluster physical gift they may have received lol..like when dad got that painting I could just imagin3 a thought bubble pop up above him thinking "Tyler ur gonna be sharing your gifts with me right!?!?" Then him getting to record all ur reactions....im gonna kind of be a bummer n say it probably hurt his soul looking down from heaven watching u sell ur collection and probably hurt even more knowing that it's what u (thought) u needed at that time to heal... with that said, I'm glad u have the home videos in their stead and hopefully keep those memory cards in a saftey deposit box at Bank or safe!! They're worth more than gold or diamonds imo.

Most Sega games are very expensive even loose without box and manual because of collectors buying so many games at a time since they get sponsored by companies to buy free games and give reviews about it on RU-vid aka metal Jesus rocks and radical reggie
