What is happiness and how do we become happy?
Figuring out what will make us human beings perfectly happy, St. Thomas focuses on what is unique about us, what makes us different from grub worms and animals. It's that we can think and know, as well as love. Perfect happiness involves thinking about and loving those goods humans are designed to think about and love.
Beatitude (Aquinas 101) - Fr. Thomas Petri, O.P.

I am a 20-year-old college student who studies natural science and knows nothing about religion. I am surprised to realize how deeply the video touched me after watching this because at first I just came here to randomly search, trying to finish my philosophy homework. Thanks!

I love all the videos from The Thomistic Institute. That being said, this may be the most important video, since most people seem to have no idea about what happiness is and how to nurture it in a community. The Dominicans here, with their sharp minds and charitable hearts, are bringing to the Internet a GREAT gift -- understanding the most important realities of the Faith -- we desperately need these Dominicans in the desert of the Internet. Many many thanks.

So well stated and explained. As James Fee said 4 months ago, the joy Fr. Petri has in discussing this really shines through in this video. And you guys really make metaphysics much more easy to understand for this engineer who is better suited to just regular physics! Thanks!

I’m almost perfectly happy! Lord have mercy! “Trick me O Lord; and save me!!” May the Good be our only longing!! 1 Corinthians 15,28 - “And, when all things have been subordinated to him, then will the Son himself also be subordinated to the one who has subordinated all things to him, so that God may be all in all.”

I agree Jonathan - WHERE was this when we were growing up - authentic Thomism suppressed, when it has many of the most important answers we have? In all seriousness, for this century, this may be the neoThomism we've all been waiting for -- The Thomistic Institute on RU-vid -- a global outreach for the Dominicans without needing to leave their living quarters - a new and effective evangelization.

This reminds me of Aristotle's Nicomachean Ethics, does Saint Thomas write an ethical treatise like Aristotle or no? I would like to know, ethics is a great study for me.

What exactly is the "Glory of God?" How do we glorify GOD?

It's not a change to God, but rather, a making manifest of his attributes and excellence through creaturely participation.

Does the beatific vision resemble Plato's Symposium, in which the soul climbs the ladder of particular beautiful creatures as a means to the end of throwing away the ladder? Does this not resemble as well Beatrice's and Dante's turning away from one other to be absorbed in the beatific vision? Is this a Platonized version of Christianity that ends up devaluing and demeaning Creation - ending up in a similar place as the Gnostics St. Thomas so opposed? Is the beatific vision consistent with God's love of the world, of the bring of the Kingdom of God to the world through Jesus Christ? Does Aquinas abandon the Aristotelian insights in the end for a Platonic Christian philosophy? I love the thought of Aquinas, but these are the kinds of questions or even problems I have when I confront the beatific vision. Thank you very much for the public focus on St. Thomas!
