Beatles Blackbird (Piano Tutorial)
• Beatles Blackbird (Pia...
Take some piano lessons from Scott Houston “The Piano Guy.” In this video, Scott and his guest pianist, Bradley Sowash, demonstrate how to play the Beatles tune, Blackbird.
Bradley starts out by showing you the single note melody line of Blackbird. Then he demonstrates playing the chords used in the song: F, D, Gm, Bb, G7.
Bradley shares that he finds it useful to imagine that he has 3 hands playing the piano-he spreads both hands wide and with the left pinkie plays the bass, right hand plays the melody and the middle fingers fill in with chord tones.
If you are at a loss of what to do, listen to a few recordings of the song either on youtube or itunes. Then try to imitate what you like.
Scott’s life goal is help you learn to play piano through piano lessons that you can take anywhere and at any time to get you started having some fun at a piano or keyboard as quickly as possible.
The video concludes with a great performance of Bradley playing " Blackbird " on piano.
Scott Houston is the host of The Piano Guy television series on Public Television and has taught hundreds of thousands of folks like yourself, how to have some fun on their piano or keyboard. He wants to help you get there too-as quickly as possible.
The following topics are covered in this video:
moving baseline;
F, D, Gm, Bb, G7: chords;

That's not what happened. They would play Bach on their guitars at parties, to show that they weren't "just a bunch of rockers", and could actually play "sophisticated" music. And, those Bach pieces inspired the musical structure of Blackbird. This is from a relatively recent interview of Paul McCartney.

The connection between Bach's Bouree and Blackbird is due to the *guitar finger technique* of playing the bass note with the thumb and one high note with the finger.

If you listen to him play it live, he explains it. The intro, actually, is what they got from Bach, not the melody.

You can hear Paul McCartney tell the correct story between the Bach piece and Blackbird at 37:30. He tells us that the similarities is mostly the fingerpicking technique. Picking a bass tone with a melody note on top of it... /watch?v=9elQeVfrLOo

I found the Bach Piece Blackbird actually borrowed the melody from "Jesu joy of man's desiring" The two pieces share the same intro. G Am G/B with a slight change going to Em (bach) instead of C A7/C# D7 B7/D# then Em (Beatles) Anyways I love both pieces :)

"Jesu Joy Of Man's Desiring" actually IS a Bach piece, it's the English title to a Johann Sebastian Bach cantata "Herz und Mund und Tat und Leben". Blackbird is a Beatles tune, not a Bach piece. I like both pieces too; "borrowing" or not, both pieces are great compositions :)

you probably all know this, but Brad Mehldau's version from "Art of the Trio" 1 does what is demonstrated here "perfectly".

Were there blackbirds in India -? So whats the big difference between classical and popular music or rock- In terms of composition practices that is for a start?

It was just Paul who was working on Classical guitar shapes in the late 60's. He stumbled on that chord progression first then melody. It was only inspired by Bach. Lennon's "Because" is a different story. Its Moonlight Sonata played backwards. The greatest songwriters of the world were also the greatest ripoff artists.. but we love them just the same.

Elliott mates! This is Paul McCartney here! Yeah so uh what actually happened was that I was just trying to write a song about a newspaper article I read regarding the riots going on in the country. And then I came up with the idea of a blackbird flying and I was referring to the black people involved in the rioting and looting.

I read that the Beatles learned this type of guitar progression from Donovan whilst on a hippy retreat in India. McCartney apparently heard an actual blackbird whistling the melody in the morning. All Beatles folk lore.

5:51 That's not atonal, it just changes the key of the song one tone under the main key.

this could have been a good tutorial but they don't teach you the whole tune. it would have been nice to run through the whole piece before rambling on about favourite licks and such
