The interaction between Heather and Lennon regarding the kittens was pretty funny. On another note, the caution from Glyn Johns regarding Allen Klein was a diplomatic warning to Lennon.

Hasn’t it busted a lot of myths about them? By ‘69 everyone thought Lennon was an aggressive weirdo; he was a very normal funny caring relaxed genius. Everyone thought Macca was a control freak balladeer; he was an all round good bloke caring genius passionate rocker; people think Ringo can’t drum… how wrong you are….. and so patient. George was full of songs at this time and humour (once they moved to Apple). Mal seemed such a likeable bloke. Giles Martin looks just like George did then. Yoko was a very benign presence, not interfering at all as long as you don’t mind her sitting there. Linda seemed just lovely. Billy Preston was just the tonic and talent they needed. How fascinating is it to see the public on the streets of Saville Row? The British class system in full swing!

Exactly!!! I think the world got a very skewed picture of John, especially after the split... in Get Back, we see the absolute Love these four guys had for each other ...and just think of the immense cosmic energy they brought into the world together... the split must have been so horrible for them all, John especially, so sensitive... after watching Get Back at least 4x, still wanting more Beatles, I just recently listened to John's Rolling Stone interview (1970) and then his last interview just two days before he was taken from us (1980)... the difference is so stark. In '70 he sounds weird, edgy, almost mean... in '80 he is a loving, sane, beautiful man.... Now, with Get Back, we see hours of John being playful and creative, the real John, ...in hindsight, my take is that he must have gone through such incredible horrific pain during the early 70s... and because of his fame, it all played out in front of the world... then, by 10 years later, he was himself again... a loving creative genius, writing incredibly beautiful songs, raising Sean... still in love with Yoko... .. Is there a way to Mandela Effect ourselves to a world where that day in Dec '80 had a different outcome??🙏💙

Pretty much everybody in the vicinity interacted joyously with Heather, the most notable exception being Yoko, who, as we learned the next day, would have been fretting over her divorce. It's notable that the day she came in was a day the band weren't supposed to be working- probably Paul & Linda's way of making up for a lack of new-daddy time (judging from the clothes, her additional inclusion in the Monday footage was anachronistic)

I became an artist ( didn't want fame....my father was a well known politician here in P.R. and I didn't like it )... I consider myself and all of us who either grew up listening to their music or have discovered them later.. extremely lucky. These 4 guys are not only the best band ever......for me they're even more important and relevant ( time will keep on telling for a long..long..long time)...than Picasso,Kennedy or Ali. This was better than all recent issues including the Anthology. God bless The Beatles..the best thing that happened in the most revolutionary decade of the most revolutionary century..and probably in history..... Stay healthy colleague. Watching this the phrase " Let's sleep on it" comes to mind. Musicians, just like the rest of us, often find we need to step back, do something different to take our minds off the present problem. Watching these guys take our, now, most treasured songs and bend them to the breaking point, distort them to the point of being unrecognizable, then letting them snap back into the form we all know and love, was some of my favorite moments. I personally feel Peter Jackson hit the nail on the head or a home run, take your pick. This whole thing, including the painfully at times, pacing, was necessary to capture the effort on everybody's part. Thank you for your take, having been in 6th grade when the Beatles performed on Ed Sullivan, sat in a movie theater with my fingers in my ears during Hard Days Night to drown out the screaming audience, thinking "it's a movie, they can't hear you", here we are decades later, listening to a good review of a great moment in history, makes me real glad I'm still here to enjoy this moment. Thanks again!

I will always be grateful to Peter Jackson for having corrected this long-standing perpetuated myth that this was one of the darkest episodes of the Beatles legacy. Instead, it a glorious story of redemption by 4 truly remarkably talented men who genuinely loved each other. Jackson let the movie speak for itself and what you witness is an unsurmountable pressure they put upon themselves, and yet they emerged with some of the greatest songs ever created. The movie truly humanizes them and shows the staggering amount of work put into creating their magic. Along the way you get to know John, Paul, George and Ringo like never before as 4 completely natural and genuinely nice people. My respect for them only grew from this movie. I’m sadden that this has been hidden for this long and we have lost so many of them - Linda, Maureen, Billy, George Martin, Mal Evans and of course George and John. Thank you Peter for doing this.

I agree completely. Since Peter Jackson has already been knighted in New Zealand.... is there some kind of global honour that could be bestowed on him for this priceless gift he's given the world? And on a smaller scale, I think it's a priceless gift to Paul and Ringo, to have had their memories of this dark time brightened a bit. For Paul, to watch his younger self singing in harmony with John again at that late date... what must that be like? Bittersweet, no doubt... but I hope overall very good. Like having a bit of his soul restored.

Ive been in a couple of original bands and have to point out that a band needs a leader. There are many personalities and egos to work with but someone has to take strong initiative to move forward. It should really be a manager so the artists can create art. It stinks being a member and trying to lead. I understand Paul a bit more after seeing Get Back.
@ScienceisRadAF
@ScienceisRadAF 2 года назад
I believe they knew the band was dissolving and that they were in the final chapters, and that’s why they spent so much time being silly and jamming to old songs. It had the feeling of a long, beautiful ‘wake’, celebrating the life that had been in the band and respectfully acknowledging its passing.

Peter Jackson did a brilliant job of stripping away the Beatlemania gloss and showing The Beatles as human beings and how their individual talents and personalities were so crucial to their collective songcraft. I was surprised to see Paul in particular show such a range of emotions, at times feeling angry, elated and sad for him. I've often read how Billy Preston's arrival lifted everybody up but to see it on film made it real, he's the unsung hero of this project. To see sweet George ignored was tough but he also found his moments of redemption, always the most soulful Beatle. And Lennon will always be greatest most literate rock musician hands down. The most talented pure musician in the band, Paul called him "The Boss" in that heartbreaking private conversation at the cafeteria, such is the esteem Lennon carries. And Ringo has to be the coolest most laid back dude on the planet and the hardest working drummer too. Fantastic rare and unexpected footage, great sound restoration. This was a phenomenal series, worth rewatching to catch the nuances missed the first go around. Thank you Peter Jackson. And of course thank you Beatles.

As for some of the critique in the visuals, I strongly believe that's due to the anti-noise software to remove the film grain. Especially true for dark underexposed film that needs to be brightened. While that software has been standard for years, and has only gotten more powerful with time, when you turn that dial too far, skin textures can begin to look a little plastic-like. The visuals don't bother me. I think Peter Jackson found a fine balance.

I think they didn't mind the self-indulgent jamming with the looming "deadline" because in their minds the rooftop performance was always only an option that they could decide not to do up until the moment they were "due" out there. I really liked the interaction between the Beatles and all of their minions. It was obvious that they were in their constant bubble and everybody else - even the George Martin's, Glynn Johns and Mal Evans' were on the outside. Their celebrity is so enormous at this point, yet this glimpse is so intimate. The fact that they pulled off such a great show on the roof is incredible to me. I have really loved this 3 part documentary and your observations Andrew. My biggest disappointment with this was the rooftop section where Mr Jackson employed split screen and playing around with the screen size ratios. After all the hype I had hoped to have seen the rooftop ‘concert’ without the street interviews. I could live with these spliced between the actual numbers whilst cameras were being reloaded with film etc but to break up actual performances of songs was a poor choice in my opinion. I also think we should have been allowed to see the filmed performances of LIB, TLAWR etc filmed for promos on the final day. I would also have had an outro showing what happened next like the intro we got on Part 1. A missed opportunity too not to feature pictures or film of all the major participants in the movie so many of whom have passed since Jan’69. In a kind of a BAFTA / Oscars type those we have lost type way. Could have been nice tribute. I felt the way part 3 was ended with just snippets of footage was not in keeping with the rest of the documentary. I’m hoping we get remastered original Let It Be movie along with Get Back 1,2&3 on the Blu-ray. I’d also like to see the 100 mins. version shown to Beatles families & friends. Don’t get me wrong I’ve loved this deep dive into Jan’69 and can’t wait to have the Blu-ray. Just feel the way it ended was a missed opportunity. Just my opinion and all opinions are valid.

Well, for someone who has been unable to see the documentaries, I want to thank you, Andrew, for being my eyes and ears, to an extent, on all of this. You gave us the facts good and straight. I do really think that most fans would've been happier watching the rooftop gig with all its stops and starts from beginning to end, without cutting to cops or those on the street, and, if anything, there is a golden opportunity to show just this as a bonus extra option on any future blue ray/dvd release, along with an extra 4 hours of footage that very few fans would complain about. As a story, the ominous cloud of Alan Klein naturally adds to our dread for the future, like telling someone not to walk under that ladder where the pot of paint lies at the top. Personally, I want to shake anyone complaining about McCartney being bossy when it was clear that there was no one else wanting to steer the ship and us, the punters, getting more music out of them collectively, as a result. Anyway, thanks for the review, Andrew. So when do you see a release date for a dvd/ blue ray release? Christmas 2023?

The recording sessions were a work in progress, later on the lyrics to the tracks were further refined and recording and remixing done in the following few months, Alan Klein proved to be the straw that broke the camel’s back in the end, that’s not strange as it proved disastrous for the relationship between Paul and the other 3.

George Martin was critical. He is THE one who saw the potential in these boys and got it out of them which launched them to success levels the world had never seen before. His role at this point was essentially help them with the songs and arraignments, get them the sounds they wanted, and get the recording to sound the best possible. He did all that and then some.

Again I agree with you regarding Paul's directing the band. I know George and John were to later criticise Paul for this, but neither of them two were willing to take the helm. As you say, the band could've quite easily ended after SGT Pepper. Whether some of Paul's decisions were right or wrong I don't know. One observation I noticed was Paul's Rickenbacker bass in the background. It had been stripped down to the wood finish which was the look it had during the Wings days. I've enjoyed your reviews for these three parts. Cheers

It’s worth remember that although there are 60 hours of footage from the Get Back sessions there were at least three, and sometimes four, cameras in operation, so many of the unused hours will be alternative angles of the events we’re now seeing for the first time. Given the amount of film wastage that goes into any production of this type, I suspect we’re being presented with pretty much everything screenable...

i think Jackson said there is about 18 hours of unique footage, t.i. they put all the audio on a timeline in the computer, and synchronized all the available film to the audio. Most of the time they have no film for the audio, because audio was much cheaper, sometimes 1 film, sometimes 2 at the same time, and on Jan 30th, they have about 8 or 9. but again, i'm a bit guessing

I also wondered what Mal Evans did - seeing him writing down lyrics and distributing them made a lot of sense as something that saves the guys a lot of time. The Get Back single had “Don’t Let Me Down “ on side B. They talk about putting Get Back out as a single - it was 1st stereo single released in US and was released as #1. Don’t Let Me Down for the single was recorded on Jan 28th 1969. John once said that every time Paul sang “get back to where you once belong” he looked at Yoko. I didn’t notice that myself but wasn’t looking for it either….

Very good review which I find myself in agreement with. It was a marathon for sure (all three episodes). I watched them with two kindred spirits and fortifying beers! The main thing that came out of it was Paul's frustration at the others' apathy. I sympathized with his work ethic in the face of Lennon's incessant mucking around (which became quite irritating). Curiously, later Lennon was much more productive and encouraging, this time in the face of Paul's apparent sour petulance. It was as if he was disenchanted with the vision he had in his head. Ultimately though, it all came together on the roof in what still astounds me as a superbly tight performance that owes so much to the telepathy of those four incredible musicians, honed from all those hours slogging it out in Hamburg. It needed a tighter edit but, all in all, it was superb.

I can understand the others boredom or maybe even feeling neglected at times with Paul directing so much but the fact of the matter is he was the hardest worker and best musician. Not saying he is the best writer as that is subjective. But the fact of the matter is the music ended up being great. Regardless, one band with 3 great writers who could also sing and play was destined to break up. Really heartwarming knowing how much they all helped Ringo. He is such a lovable guy and perfect drummer.

Firstly, I must say the very second I ended watching this 3 part documentary, I just wanted more, even the complete 57 hours taped to watch. I just want to add two quotes by Lennon in part one: 'if George quits, will get Clapton' and 'we split George's instruments now'. Typically John. Anyways, thumbs up to the different angles for the rooftop filming in this episode. And one thing I wasn't aware of is that Paul says 'Thanks, Mo' (to Maureen, Ringo's wife) at the end of the show because she appears so enthusiastically cheering. Paul even look at her as he says that. I always thought Paul said 'Thanks, Mal (Evans)'. And finally, Thank you Andrew for your 3 reviews on 'Get Back'!

Just finished watching part 3 and I'm still buzzing. I thoroughly enjoyed it. Great review Andrew. I love the way order emerges out of chaos. It doesn't seem to matter about the shambles of rehearsals, when they do a take they snap into professional mode and produce wonders. It amazes me that after 53 years we are still obsessed by The Beatles. I sent a question for Paul when he gave an interview at the Royal Festival Hall a couple of weeks ago, but it didn't get asked. How did he feel about this when his own considerably longer solo career, great as it is, is regarded as secondary? I grew up listening to The Beatles but even people who weren't born at the time feel the same, so it can't be nostalgia.

It was wonderful in this final episode/3 to see The Beatles bring it all together once they assembled on the roof top to perform. I was particularly impressed with George's guitar work on "Don't Let Me Down," "One After 909," and "I've Got a Feeling." John was enjoying himself and really rocking on the numbers they played. Paul was belting it out on "I've Got a Feeling" (Take 1), and Ringo's drumming on all the songs was fantastic. Billy Preston to was superb, adding more depth to the songs by his keyboard playing. It was nice also to see beautiful Maureen Starkey in the audience as well. I expected after the roof top performance to see the film end with The Beatles performing a complete version of one of the songs from the "Let it Be" movie, particularly "The Long and Winding Road" which I thought would have been a great ending to the P.J film. All in all, it was a great 3 nights, and now will take the time to begin to re-watch them each again analyzing them more closely in segments. I first saw the Beatles on the Ed Sullivan show when I was 10. I grew up with the Beatles who influenced me in many ways with music, dress and getting involved with TM in 1972. I see all the fun and creativity in this show and then think about the fact of this being 52 years ago and so many of the principal people are now gone - and for many years in a few cases. I see John Lennon laughing and singing and think about him being killed 41 years ago! Hard to grasp when you see them so young and creative in this film. (well - maybe John was not so creative in this film but you get what I mean). I wonder if there are others who feel this way after seeing it? I would imagine that people in my age group and have been Beatle fanatics since at least 1964 may feel similar when they watch this. I have enjoyed your recaps. I just watched Part 3 again and it gets better every time. How lucky we are to be alive with the Beatles, to be fans and feel the sheer joy of the music. There is a moment when Paul sees the police on the roof that his happiness playing live SHINES. The music is transcendent.....there is no other word. John's humor and rock and roll bliss, George's amazing ability to play live when they didn't fully have it in rehearsal. Ringo offers more than we ever knew. That steadiness is the rock behind it all. They are all so happy in the recording studio after the roof. George wants to take over London and finally looks on board with the whole film. John and Paul say goodnight. Happy tears for us. What a gift this whole thing is, was and always will be.

As annoying as Michael Lindsay-Hogg was in part 1, let’s be thankful he was mindful enough to capture not only the rooftop concert, but also the people on the street and even the Apple lobby. I don’t think the Beatles themselves thought about the attention they’d get, let alone the possibility of police storming the lobby. The drama that would have been lost without that hidden camera…. Plus the camera going to the control room was a good idea, I don’t know why I never thought about the communication between George and Glyn in the basement and the people on the roof. Obviously there was a lot of planning going on for days for this to happen, and the fact that the Beatles couldn’t decide whether they wanted to do it until moments before must have been nerve-wracking for all involved.

I watched the original Let It Be film yesterday, before I watched the new Get Back films. I thought it wasn't as depressing as I thought the first time I saw the film, in 1981 at a theater. It's still rather gloomy; the film quality is dark and bad, and the personal interactions in the film are dominated by the Paul/George argument, but the vast majority of the 80 minute film is the best takes of all the songs. Hogg was trying to present the best possible concert film, and he didn't do such a bad job. The original film isn't a good representation of the Get Back sessions, but as a concert film, which Hogg envisioned the project to be all along, his editing choices are understandable. With restored film and remixed audio, the original film will be less gloomy and improved, and I think will be reassessed positively.

I feel like we've just watched a really long episode of Big Brother where the Beatles are the contestants. We see them at work, at play, writing songs on the hoof, eavesdrop their conversations- conversations that we have no right to hear. Just absolutely brilliant from start to finish and with only a tiny element of bias - this is probably the greatest music documentary ever made - magnificent in every way. Hats off to Peter Jackson for the quality of the footage , same to Giles Martin for the mixing of the soundtrack. Now its all over, I feel kind of empty and ready now to see a few more hours of the bits Jackson left off.

I loved when Mal was telling the cops he wasn't going to do things he had no intention of doing. Fobbing them off basically!

Mal was such an unsung hero in the Beatle's story!

George was a support figure in the month of January ‘69 BECAUSE the entire premise of Let it Be album/film project was to “get back” to their roots-when George was lead guitarist, not a co-equal song writer.

Well...I will give it to you straight. I hated the split screen during the rooftop concert. I had been looking forward to seeing The Beatles rooftop concert for the first time in bright, sharp, color, on my 65 inch TV, full screen the way it was first shown in the Let It Be movie, and what I got were small little pictures thought 90 percent of the concert footage. A total disappointment for me. I wanted to see The Beatles larger than life, and it was not to be. Then, they don't even show the three songs before the rooftop scene, except cut up during the credits.That is why I want the original movie released as it was in 1970, but fully restored. That is what would make me happy. The rest of part 3 was amazing. I loved it.

Hang on, the Blu-ray set will have all that and more!

I’m in total agreement with you. Hopefully there will be a Blu-ray with remastered original Let It Be Film, Get Back 1,2&3, 100mins version shown to Beatles families & the promos shot on the final day. Even if Peter Jackson didn’t want to use same footage as original movie surely he could have selected alternative shots. RCA did this some years ago for Elvis Presley ‘68 TV Special. I’ve loved the deep dive into Jan’69 but the final hour or so was a missed opportunity after all the hype and build up.

I personally liked the split screens, it allowed me to see angles they other wise wouldn’t have included. But regardless, the Let It Be movie is apparently coming next year so you should get your wish

@@continentalgin No! No plans from Disney who own the rights to Jackson's film,for a physical release. Peter Jackson has said it in several interviews!

what you say about Paul is true . He didn't even WANT to be the "boss " as such. That's something we learned with this documentary , how much he hated to be the "leader " of the group . I'm a long time fan of the group and had always assumed he took on that role because he wanted to, but that myth was dispelled .

Agreed, Paul gets vindicated on a lot of levels by this extra footage. He must have felt such relief seeing this. He was also very supportive of John and Yoko.
