The Beatles have been in my blood since I was a teenager (I am now 54). I love every album but I love some more than others. I now realise their greatest album for me is from 1964. A Hard Days Night. The UK version is just perfect pop. There is not a weak song on the album. Sublime music from the greatest band of all time. Many regards from England.

I mean this sincerely. Your opinion is the opposite if mine, though I do understand your observations and that that film is also my favorite and perhaps the best 'Rock Film' ever. I grew up in the 60's with their LPs as they came out (parents). Of their first 3 LPs I would put it last (sounding very competant but somewhat 'routine') but based on my desire to hear those LPs now I put 'Meet the Beatles' first (still fresh like the first LP but better recorded) and 'Please Please Me' (fresh and explosive if somewhat rough) as 2nd. IMHO!

Great video! The Yellow Submarine Songtrack is fantastic and, unlike a lot of people, I think All Together Now, Hey Bulldog, Only A Northern Song and It's All Too Much are up there with the best in the Beatles canon. Love the channel and keep on putting out your fantastic video's!

Mr Moonlight is one John Lennon's best vocals, the entire song can stand up to any song anytime. It was just before Neil Armstrong's walk on the moon, which took the romance out of the aura of moonlight magic and sonatas by the truckload. Great song by the Beatles.

Always great to see your Beatles shelves! Not sure how I would rank my faves. As you say, they're all amazing. Which do I listen to most? Help (US), Please Please Me, Hard Days Night (US), Rubber Soul, Magical Mystery Tour, Sgt Pepper. Help was my first (grown up) record and I love how it introduced me to Beatles, a Bond-like soundtrack score, and Indian music all at once!

Loved your thoroughly entertaining walk-through of top Beatles albums, and all your fan-based collection of Beatlish record editions and memorabilia. I've not seen the US-based editions before and they look good as you say. Here's my top 5:- 1) Revolver(easily the best they ever did at their peak);great photographs; Taxman, Eleanor Rigby, And Your Bird best. 2) Rubber Soul( loved that cover; liked your American version); Baby you can drive my car, The Word, Norwegian Wood. 3) The White Album ( where they recognizably break away into their own songs; generous spread); Back in the USSR, Dear Prudence, Blackbird, While my Guitar, Mother Nature's Son, Helter Skelter, Cry Baby Cry are best. 4) Sgt. Pepper ( great 1st concept album- made as if they were another band; I think Strawberry Fields/Penny lane rather than Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite/Good Morning Good Morning would have been better); A Day in the Life. 5) Abbey Road ( Something, Come Together and the medley of tracks at end the best) .

Holy crap! What a collection! We will agree to disagree on Rubber Soul & Magical Mystery Tour. I'm just glad you didn't claim the Ringo 1973 album to be a Beatles album lol!! I've seen a couple of people (Mayo & Matthew Smith) rank the Beatles Second Album has their favourite. I first heard The Beatles on the Red Album in my sister’s apartment in the 80s, when I was a teenager. I’ve struggled with them a lot since and I’ve now come to accept that I’m really only a casual fan. That Red album plus Rubber Soul and Revolver - is really all I need. Dylan is in my blood, I love the Stones from Beggars Banquet to Undercover, I love The Byrds up to Sweetheart of the Rodeo but so much Beatles I just can’t love. I have tried. I think Ringo is amazing. I love Octopus's Garden. I love Don't Pass Me By. And, with the Beatles being so popular, it is sometimes possible to feel fatigued towards some of their more popular songs. With a Little Help From My Friends can fall into that category. I still love it. Also, you don't need to call out the worst song on an album if you like the song. I think Ringo is an essential part of the Beatles... just as much as any other Beatle. I ❤️Ringo. He's pretty f-ing cool!

In hindsight, as far as the US Beatles albums go, I do prefer 'Meet The Beatles' to 'With The Beatles' . I also prefer the US 'Magical Mystery Tour' album to the UK double EP. 'Second ,(Capitol), Album' ,aside from the rather unimaginative title, is an enjoyable listen ,even with the fake stereo on tracks like 'I'll Get You' & 'She Loves You'. "Rubber Soul' works, although I miss 'Nowhere Man' and 'If I Needed Someone' not being on it. 'Rubber Soul' was also one of only 3 instances when a US Beatles album had 12 songs on it. The others were United Artists' 'Hard Day's Night' and Capitol's 'Help!' The others, up to 'Revolver' had only 11 songs on them. Very entertaining presentation. I also wanted to mention Capitol in Canada released Beatles records a year before Capitol in The US did. All the early singles from 'Love Me Do' to 'She Loves You' had that Capitol swirl on them in Canada. 'She Loves You' was eventually the song that broke The Beatles in Canada in November of 1963. 2 of the Canadian albums had 14 tracks on them: 'Beatlemania! With The Beatles' which had the same track listing and cover as the UK version, released in late November of 1963, and 'Twist & Shout', released in Feb. of 1964, but, without 'I Saw Her Standing There' and 'Misery'. They were replaced with current hits "From Me to You' & 'She Loves You'. The previous 2 songs were put on the rather dubious last Canadian Beatles album "Long Tall Sally, released in may 1964 with the same cover as the US "Second album', with a slightly different shade of colour on the front. It was rather dubious as it contained at least 4 songs that were already on the 'Beatlemania!' album. They charted in the US and Capitol in the US ordered Capitol Canada to stop issuing their own albums and follow their issues afterwards. Here's the Canadian story. Enjoy: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-QkfyPevY42M.html

And, natch, what makes the A1/B3 so good are the True Stereo versions of "Strawberry Fields" "Penny Lane" and "All You Need is Love" ... I believe that the US issue as well as the UK "stereo" EP are fake stereo. Those A1/B3 MMTs are a must-have!

From my recollection, for Rubber Soul, only the US stereo version of Rubber Soul has the false intro to I'm Looking Through You (one of my favorites) and I have an outstanding pressing of the US stereo reissue from 1983, as it has one, the reissued rainbow rim label of the 60's, but has a ONE year catalog #. Not sure why the change from previous pressings, but from that, I could ascertain mine is a 1983 pressing from the well regarded Capitol reissues of the Beatles Catalog. This reissue was first issued in 1978 and lasted until 1986-87 when Capitol ceased pressing LP's and the Parlaphone CD's came out, and yes, I do have some of those, but still prefer the US Capitol pressings as that's what I was introduced to, in glorious wide 2 channel stereo in 1976-77 by my best friend whom borrowed his older brother's copies one day and brought them over and I first heard them, then an ex BIL gave me 2 cassettes of their mid early to mid period recordings on 2 cassettes Christmas of 79 and the rest, as they say, is history. Still a big fan of their work, though not a completest by any stretch of the imagination. Rubber Soul is one of my favorites, but it HAS to be the US Capitol STEREO issue though, for that false intro on I'm Looking Through You (love it) and Run For Your Life, even though it's a weaker song of the two. Totally agree with the others, their weakest song was miles better than many's best.

Norman: You Can`t Compare The Cover Of "With The Beatles" To "Electric Cafè" By "Kraftwerk". It`s A Completely Different Way Of Design. The Germans Made 3D Creations For This At The Institute Of Technology In New York And Showed The Technical Side Of Our Everyday Life And This Is The World We Live In. It Was A Lot Of Work And The Head Sizes Had To Be Measured Precisely To Continue Working On. That Was Also Part Of The Aesthetic(s) For The Video Of "Musique Non Stop". When They Released The Single, It Was A New Or Different Way Of Artwork And In Permanent Rotation On "MTV". Even Today: This Is More Than Just A Photo.

I’ve been a huge Beatles fan seemingly forever & starting buying their 45s & LPs starting when I was 8 in early 1970. My favorites are as follows: 13. Yellow Submarine Soundtrack: The original 1969 release. It’s All Too Much & Hey Bulldog are favorites of mine. I agree with you about the 1999 Songtrack-remastering really makes those songs pop! 12. Beatles For Sale: their completely understandable exhaustion shows on this disk. My favorites are Don’t want to spoil the party, 8 Days a week, No Reply. Skip Mr Moonlight. 11. With The Beatles: Faves: All I’ve Got to Do, You’ve Really Got a hold on Me, All My Lovin’. Never really cared for I wanna Be Your Man 10. Please Please Me: Faves: There’s a Place, Anna, I saw her standing there. Not a fan of A Taste of Honey 9. Let It Be: I’ve Got a Feeling, Two of Us, Let it Be. Least favorite: Dig it 8. Help: faves: Ticket To Ride, I’ve Just Seen a Face, You’ve Got to Hide… Least favorite: Dizzy Miss Litzy (this song never fit with the mid-65 Beatles imo) 7. A Hard Day’s Night: faves: an awesome album!! Faves: AHDN, Things We Said Today, Anytime at all & many more. No least favorites. 6. The Beatles (White Album): a glorious mess: Faves: Dear Prudence, Long Long Long, Sexy Sadie, I Will, Mother Natures Son, While my Guitar… least favorite: Wild Honey Pie 5. Magical Mystery Tour: incredible classics SFF & Penny Lane, Fool on the Hill, Baby you’re a Rich Man, I am the Walrus. Least fave: Blue Jay Way (after the first 3 minutes) 4. Abbey Road: Faves: all of side 2. Least favorite song: Maxwell’s Silver Hammer 3. Sgt Pepper: All the songs are great imo 2. Rubber Soul: All are great except What Goes On, which is a bit clunky. Also I like Drive My Car, but it doesn’t fit. I’m always surprised they opened each side with these two songs. US versions are much more cohesive! 1. Revolver: Simply a perfect album. I even like Yellow Submarine. She Said, She Said, For No One, Here There Everywhere & I want to tell you are probably my favorites. But jeeze what about Eleanor, Taxman, Got to Get You… Tomorrow??? Etc… Past Masters need consideration too as there are many essential songs just released as singles: Day Tripper, I Want to Hold your Hand, Hey Jude, Don’t Let Me Down, Rain!!!

If you chose Revolver as your number one, it doesn't make any sense at all to place Rubber Soul at 8th, given that they're most similar of all Beatles albums.

Yes , the US track list of Rubber Soul , is my preferred version as well . Rubber Soul without It's Only Love , and I've Just Seen a Face , just doesn't seem right . This version of Rubber Soul ranks number one in my listing of Beatle favourites . Rounding out the top 5 would be : Abbey Road , A Hard Day's Night , The White Album , and Sgt. Peppers . I am also a fan of Beatles' Second Album , Beatles' "65 , and Beatles VI . The first Beatles album that I bought as a kid was Twist and Shout , which is the Canadian version of Please Please Me , except that it adds From Me To You , and She Loves You , in place of, Misery and I Saw Here Standing There.

As a photo guy, don’t you think it would have been better for Ringo to be in line with the rest of them? Or was technology lacking for that to be the case?
@mazzysmusic
@mazzysmusic 4 года назад
Not about technology but wanting to fit into a square cover format. I guess they could have had two top and bottom but Robert Freeman had a great eye and liked their positions. All taken together.

For What It’s Worth: 13. Yellow Submarine 12. With The Beatles 11. Beatles for Sale 10. Please Please Me 9. Hard Days’ Night 8. Let It Be 7. Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band 6. Help! 5. Rubber Soul 4. The White Album 3. Magical Mystery Tour 2. Abbey Road 1. Revolver Just my preference. Sgt. Pepper’s would be higher if I was being paid to be objective.

Magical Mystery Tour wasn't an album in the UK, it was only available as an EP The US album was widely imported into the UK so years later they finally decided to release a British version of the American album

Enjoyed your review, Massie! My favorite is Sargent Pepper's it is so much fun to listen to, the laughter on the first track, like you are entering a musical carnival. My favorite Beatles song is Penny Lane. 'Penny Lane is in my ears and in my eyes' is about being immersed in a world and the fond memories you have of that time. I understand musically that Revolver is a great album but the themes of the songs are depressing. Eleanor Rigby keeps her face in a jar by the door? Uugh. And a song about the tax man? No thanks! I want to meet the girl with kaleidoscope eyes : )

They really changed the course of popular music as far s I am concerned, my top two would be A Hard Day's Night & Please Please Me. PPM was the second album I owned and played it to death, AHDN is my go to album when my spirits need lifting, all penned by them and not a bad track on the album.

It's unfortunate that in some senses you don't make more Beatles content Mazzy. I understand your reasoning, but I dare say that you Beatles content is on part with some of the best on RU-vid. I have to agree with you regarding "With The Beatles", although I think what damns it in the eyes of Beatles fans who give it a low ranking is that it is neither as bombastic as "Please Please Me" nor revolutionary as "A Hard Day's Night". "A Hard Day's Night" in particular for me at least defines the second wave of rock 'n' roll music or if you prefer the much lauded "The Liverpool Sound". It is the album of record as far as that period of music is concerned. "With The Beatles" is the album that fell between these two and is perhaps the very best exploration of The Beatles' roots in terms of their rock 'n' roll influences, although you could certainly make the case for "Please Please Me" as well. So in that context it is absolutely essential in terms of it's relevance to the rest of the canon, but in terms of sheer listening enjoyment, at times the covers tend to not mesh as well with the original compositions on that record. I will say that both "A Taste of Honey" and "Till There Was You" have become eminently important to the legacy of The Beatles as time has moved forward as more so than anything else in their catalog, it is these two songs that keep The Beatles firmly rooted within the nineteen sixties. There has always been this overriding narrative about the timelessness of Beatles music and while that is certainly fine, I think an equally important narrative to keep in mind is that The Beatles were very much a part of the musical climate in which their work was created in the sense that in the early sixties, a band such as The Beatles would be expected to add a few novelty songs like "Till There Was You" into their repertoire in order to satiate a certain demographic of their audience. This is a trend that obviously went away with time as popular music moved forward, but I've always been glad that "A Taste of Honey" and "Till There Was You" are on Beatles album for if nothing else that reminds us that they came along at a very specific junction in musical history and became a huge part of that era.
