The greatest, most consistent catalog in music history. When I'm asked what my favorite album of all-time is, I say the Beatles album box set. Their entire body of work is a miracle.

I’d agree to be fair. The only catalogue that doesn’t have one stand out album or a peak so to speak and gets arguably better and better chronologically (putting movie soundtracks aside)

This guys were from another planet. I'm a pianist and composer, studied musical production. I can say I understand the music system and this guys genius is hard to even comprehend. I read that they played 8 hours a day from Monday to Monday. So they had performed approximately 1200 concerts before they were famous. They were masters at 20 years old

Mark Lewisohn goes in to detail in his mammoth "Tune In" book about how The Beatles were pretty much the most experienced rock n roll band in the world even before they made it famous, based on their history of live playing and comparing it to what was happening in other rock n roll scenes around the world.

"You could stare at this cover [Sgt. Pepper] for months and still devour it". Wow! You're absolutely correct there! Sgt. Pepper is my #1 favorite album by The Beatles (which means my favorite album by anyone). 100% perfection to me. Though every single song by the Beatles I love. Enjoyed the video -- I'm new to your channel, what are some other bands you like?

Hmm. Always gonna be a tough call, and there's likely to be much debate ever the rankings. I think I would be fairly close to your choices. Probably only one or two changes. Like Revolver at number 1. Plus I'd have to argue that while not a studio album as such, I would include Oldies but Goldies in my ranking. Purely because it's the only place in the groups life where you could get the early singles in album form, plus the cracking Bad Boy. I would say it's a bit Magic Mystery Tour ish. Not a real album. But worthy of inclusion for the collection of singles and one off tracks. Great video mate

My top 7 albums are my favorite albums. Of course my two favorite later Beatles albums are Sergeant Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, and Magical Mystery Tour. I placed those two at 7 and 6 just because there was not enough room to rate these two albums for me. But those are some of my faves of the Beatles. I also really love the instrumental Flying and Blue Jay Way from Magical Mystery Tour. I also love When I’m 64 from Sgt Pepper.

HI Rami, a good idea for long term, unlikely to be soon though. Although I've got all the US albums, and am familiar with some of the differences, at this moment in time I'm not sure I know the subject well enough! I'd have to include mono/stereo differences also I think if/when I do it!

Evening Andrew , I think it's impossible to rank the beatles studio albums ,because it's so hard to do because in my mind they are all good , but I ask myself do you include the magical mystery tour album , because that did not come out in the UK until 1976 after the beatles split, it came out in the u.s a in 1967 .

That's the issue, it's a USA compilation. Never intended as an album by The Beatles in the '60's so should be classified with the other USA releases.

I would put Revolver at No 1. I actually think Sgt Pepper is a little patchy song wise, especially the second side, although the concept is revolutionary. Abbey Road is up there at 2, and maybe Help! at 3. I actually think Help! is a remarkable consistent album which is a little underrated. It may not be as groundbreaking as some of the later albums, but it is very enjoyable throughout.

The Beatles catalogue is complicated by the different releases in the uk and America. Magical mystery tour was released as a double ep in the uk originally and didn’t have strawberry fields, penny lane or all you need is love. That was released as an album in that form later in America and eventually later versions had them on here

More or less agreed with you in your choices, Andrew. Pepper.... When I first heard it, I was gobsmacked. How the hell can they top this? They came damn close with the White Album. I wouldn't have put A Hard Day's Night so low, but as Paul Simon sang... One Man's Ceiling is Another Man's Floor. I admire your guts for putting these classic albums in order. Most of the fans I know put Pepper as the fave, so you're choices aren't too wild or silly 🕉

Thanks for your ranking Andrew - very interesting!! A couple of things from me : I don't really regard "Magical Mystery Tour" as a "proper" album - as it was never intended that way (as good as it is). Also i think "Yellow Submarine" should have come out around August 1968 - with some of the already recorded songs from the White Album sessions put on side 2 instead of the instrumentals. This would have also tied in with the release of the film. The "White Album" should have been a single album IMO. I'll always put "Beatles For Sale" above "Hard Days Night. Even though "Sale" had some covers, the approach lyrically & musically was very fresh. I feel on "AHDN" , the original formula was starting to get a bit stale by the 3rd album. Though there are some great, very fresh songs such as "Things We Said Today" & "I'll Be Back". No. 1 for me: "Abbey Road". No. 2: "Rubber Soul". No. 3: "Sgt. Pepper". My rankings for the others always change.

13 - With The Beatles With The Beatles has a few songs that I don't really like - Hold Me Tight, I Wanna Be Your Man, Little Child, and then it has some average songs in my opinion - Devil In Her Heart, You Really Got A Hold On Me. But it does have the classics It Won't Be Long and Money. 12 - Yellow Submarine 11 - Beatles For Sale It has I'm A Loser, Every Little Thing, I Don't Want To Spoil The Party and I'll Follow The Sun, and it also has not so great songs such as Honey Don't, Mr. Moonlight, Words Of Love, and Everybody's Trying To Be My Baby. 10 - Please Please Me 9 - Help! Help has the covers Act Naturally and Dizzy Miss Lizzy. It also has a song I hate on it - Tell Me What You See. 8 - A Hard Day's Night 7 - Let It Be 6 - Magical Mystery Tour 5 - Rubber Soul For some reason, I have never loved this album as much as the following four, but it has Norwegian Wood, Nowhere Man, Girl and In My Life, which I all love. 4 - White Album (The Beatles) It has songs I love - Back In The USSR, Dear Prudence, While My Guitar Gently Weeps, Happiness Is A Warm Gun, I'm So Tired, Blackbird, Rocky Raccoon, Mother Nature's Son, Helter Skelter, Honey Pie and Cry Baby Cry, but it has lots of filler too - Wild Honey Pie, Piggies, Why Don't We Do It In The Road, and Revolution 9. 3 - Revolver This used to be my favourite. With Taxman, Eleanor Rigby, I'm Only Sleeping, She Said She Said, For No One, Got To Get You Into My Life, and of course Tomorrow Never Knows at the end. 2 - Abbey Road The medley, man... 1 - Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band No big surprise here. It has the classics With A Little Help From My Friends, Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds, Getting Better, She's Leaving Home, Within You Without You, When I'm Sixty Four, and the closing track A Day In The Life is what I believe to be the best song ever written. Better than Bohemian Rhapsody. By a lot. This album has no throwaway - not even Good Morning Good Morning, Fixing A Hole and Being For The Benefit Of Mr. Kite are filler. That's what makes the album so great.

"A Hard Day's Night" (rel. Jul. 10, 1964) for me, including the under-rated George lead, "I'm Happy Just to Dance With You." Also: "Something New" with George's upbeat love song on it (plus "When I Get Home", "Slow Down", "Matchbox" "Things We Said Today, "If I Fell, etc.) "HELP!", "Beatles '65", "Meet The Beatles" and "The Beatles Second Album" with the superb "Money" (John lead, screaming to the skies his love for it) and the incomparable "She Loves You", performed in "A Hard Day's Night" movie.

When The Beatles recorded "Please,Please Me" in one day, didn't the weather conditions mirror their Decca audition on January 1,1962(a snowstorm which Neil Aspinall had to battle through on the way down to the studio)? It also didn't help that all The Beatles had colds, but John fared the worst,as heard on "Twist and Shout".

Brilliant, but flawed album 07. Help 06. Rubber Soul 05. A Hard Days Night. #5 and 6 go back and forth with each other. Next week might be different 04. Magical Mystery Tour 03. Tried to do this so many times. The configuration changes but not by much (same bottom five, same middle two, same top five - don't really count Yellow Submarine, which is like an EP - also one could throw in the two Past Masters albums to be a completist). Anyway, I've honestly come to this conclusion: Bottom ranking a five way tie: Please Please Me, With the Beatles, A Hard Day's Night, Beatles for Sale, Help! Middle ranking: Rubber Soul and Magical Mystery Tour Top ranking another five way tie: Revolver, Sgt. Pepper, The Beatles, Abbey Road, Let It Be...NAKED I *could* make finer distinctions, but whatever one of the top five or bottom five I'm listening to, I find every reason to say it is 'the best' of those groupings. I don't listen to Pepper as much as the other top fives, but whenever I do, I'm blown away and chastise myself for not putting it on more often. The majesty of the four or five best songs on A Hard Day's Night and Help! each seem to put these albums above the others in the bottom ranking, but as albums, I have the same experience as I do with the Top Five - which is that I think whatever one I'm listening to is, not the best in this case, but equal to the others in that bottom ranking *as an album*. Rubber Soul was on track (apologies) to be included in the top ranking but for the last three tracks. Similarly, MMT has a couple-three weaker tracks and most importantly suffers from obviously not having been conceived as an album, as all the others were. In any event, they are ALL masterpieces which taken together make The Beatles the greatest rock/pop/rock n roll group of all time. As for Let It Be ... Naked? What can I say? They finally got it right after 25 years. If not 'the best', it is the album itunes tells me that I listen to most often of them all. Cheers.

I concur with Tim Riley when he writes that Pepper is the Beatle's Mona Lisa and that Revolver is their best album, for sturdier material--to my ears, it sounds like a greatest hits compilation; hence: | Revolver | Pepper | White | Rubber | Abbey | Please | Hard | Help | Magical | Be | With | Sale | Submarine |.

I know my overall rankings will be different than most people's in many respects, but I tried to use only one criteria (which is difficult when taking into consideration the Beatles' overall body of work). I've tried to ONLY use what I consider to be the overall consistency and quality of songs on each album, and NOT their historical importance in the history of music, which I think can sometimes throw the rankings of a body of work off-balance and not accurately reflect how good or great the songs on an album are. And no, I'm not suggesting that Andrew Dixon made that mistake. With that in mind, these would be my rankings, with comments when appropriate: 1) 'A Hard Day's Night'. No single Beatles album has more five-star songs (with the exception of the 'White Album', but that's a double album) - the title track, "I Should Have Known Better", "If I Fell", "Can't Buy Me Love", "Any Time at All", "Things We Said Today", "You Can't Do That" and "I'll Be Back" are all masterpieces. And not one track on the album falls below three stars, in my book. Based on that, I rank it as the Beatles' best album. And the energy and sheer joy of the album is undeniable. 2) 'Help!'. I would put the seven songs on side one up against ANY pop or rock album by any artist, including side two of 'Abbey Road'. It's pure pop perfection. And side two is also great, with only one weak moment, in my opinion ("You Like Me Too Much"). 3) 'With the Beatles'. Sure, half of it is covers. But they are also the best covers the Beatles ever did, and no other Beatles album captures their raw rocking energy like this one does. All of the songs, both original and otherwise, are either great or very good, and I think this album features some of the very best vocal performances that John Lennon ever turned in. His voice is so magnificent on "Please Mr. Postman" that it brings tears to my eyes, and the band does such a sterling (and snarling) job on their cover of "Money" that (again, my opinion) it tears "Twist and Shout" to shreds. George Harrison's moody but very danceable "Don't Bother Me" is one of his great, unheralded songs. I don't understand why more people don't rank this album higher. 4) 'Revolver'. It's considered by many to be the Beatles' best, and I do consider it to feature Paul McCartney's very best work on a Beatles album. The reason it's not number one for me is because it has what I consider to be one mediocre track ("Dr. Robert") and two weak ones ("Love You To" and "Yellow Submarine"). In my opinion, these two songs should have been replaced by "Paperback Writer" and "Rain". Had they done that, it would be my number one for sure. 5) 'Rubber Soul'. Again, had the band replaced "What Goes On" and "Run for Your Life" with their single of the time ("Day Tripper" b/w "We Can Work It Out"), this one would rank probably as their second or third best for me. Just as 'Revolver' would feature Paul McCartney's best songs on a Beatles album, I think 'Rubber Soul' does the same with John Lennon's songs. 6) 'Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band'. All I will say here is that this album's magnificence for me is slightly brought down by one song that I consider dreary and ponderous ("Within You Without You") and two that are just mediocre at best ("Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite" and "When I'm Sixty-Four"). Otherwise, a brilliant, wonderful album. 7) 'Magical Mystery Tour'. You can't go wrong with an album that features "Strawberry Fields Forever", "Penny Lane", "I am the Walrus", "All You Need Is Love" and what I consider to be the best of McCartney's nostalgic music-hall type songs, "Your Mother Should Know". 8) 'The Beatles (aka The White Album)'. I count 12 excellent songs, 12 very good songs, 2 mediocre songs, 2 below-par songs and 2 flat-out awful songs ("Wild Honey Pie" and "Revolution 9") on this fascinating, sprawling double album. 9) 'Please Please Me' 10) 'Abbey Road'. Its ranking is hurt for me by the fact that I could easily stop playing side one once "Something" has faded out. But the entirety of side two simply can't be denied. 11) 'Beatles for Sale'. Lots of good stuff here, but only one truly great original - "Eight Days a Week". 12) 'Let It Be' 13) The 'Yellow Submarine' soundtrack

Maybe time for my ranking? First, I think there is not really a bad Beatles album.. ok, maybe yellow submarine... my ranking depends on actual mood and may be changing between No. 10 and No. 3 tomorrow.... 13 - Yellow Submarine (Hey bulldog is strong, All Too Much is ok, rest of songs and side 2 is redundant) 12 - For Sale (for me, bad choice of songs and in song order... I would have add the single songs I Feel Fine, She's a Woman and outtake Leave My Kitten alone.. therefore I had dropped Mr. Moonlight, Words of Love and Every Little Thing.. sorry...but the cover art is great.. so iconic 11 - With the Beatles (weaker song writing of Lennon/McCartney songs as the debut, but the cover versions are stronger than the covers on PPM; like PPM hardly listenable via headphones in stereo, but great on a real hifi system with big speakers) 10 - Magical Mystery Tour (very good songs, but it does not work as an album for me) 09 - Please Please Me (maybe the best debut album of a band ever... strong songwriting for the Beatles originals... and what an incredible final track) 08 - Help (brilliant, but two or three fillers...very country..) 07 - Abbey Road (Side two has brilliant moments, but I cannot stand I want you (She's so heavy) and I am not a great fan of Lennon's medley songs - Mean Mr. Mustard is not so good... the McCartney stuff and also the Harrison Songs are just stunning! 06 - Let it Be (my first ever album, I bought with own money ... in 1986 or 87??, still great, even in the spector version - "I Dig a Pygmy, by Charles Hawtrey and The Deaf-Aids.... " what an opener!!! 05 - A Hard Day's Night (only Lennon/McCartney - their first real masterpiece - only a Ringo song is missing) 04 - Rubber Soul (I heard it first when I was 16, I was heavily drunken that night ... oh my god, I felt so sick; I remember this every time I hear the album,, Just great... Beatles go Folk Rock!) 03 - Revolver (wow!! just wow!!!!! incredible!!! the Beatles invented britpop ... not a weak song included) 02 - Sgt. Pepper's ... (maybe the most important album in music history; still so relevant more than 50 years after recording ... very strong songwriting and production.. everything is perfect imo, the cover artwork is so iconic) 01 Th Beatles (aka White Album)... nothing more to say. My all time favorite Album ever... I have 7 different versions on CD (1987, 2009, 2018 remix and needle drops from DESS ...

My next favorite Beatles compilation album Number six would have to be the Beatles past masters volume one and cute it’s a really great album because you have all the Beatles singles and the piece that were never released on any album except in America probably even with bad boy which was the first time Americans got to hear it. I love the fact that you get to hear a different version of love me do featuring the first version which was released as a single featuring the session drummer and the white that’s a great version and what you don’t hear are the handclaps and the Ringo Starr version as you do in the single version I bought this album when it first came out I only had buying one I never had time to open till I bought the Beatles box set from 2009 and a model box that as well. I was really grateful to have the Beatles past Masters volumes one and two which is a great compilation album if you wanna get deeper into the Beatles catalog and you want to have all the singles in one place this is the way to go What a great way to start with love me do going all the way through to I’m down, I had never heard of the Beatles singing in German up until I bought the Beatles past masters compilation albums. I love the fact that you get to hear the Beatles singing I want to hold your hand and she loves you in German and what’s really cool is you get to hear both stereo and mono mixes. Then on volume two of the past Masters going from day tripper all the way through to let it be to you know my name look up the number what a great listening experience. My next Beatles album number five it would have to be the Beatles red and the blue albums 1962 to 1966 and 1967 to 1970, I had bought those albums when they were remastered in 1993 they were in a Juul case. Which was very bulky at the time but it’s still a good album nonetheless I was so surprised to hear how good the final version from 2014 was I love the fact that the Beatles red and the blue albums were remastered first as a CD remastered from the digging packs and then getting to hear them for the first time on vinyl I first bought the final version from the US copy from capital recordsThen I bought them the Beatles red and the blue album at my favorite music store Music Millennium here in Portland Oregon. When I bought the Beatles albums I couldn’t wait to hear how they sounded, when I listen to those albums I was grateful to hear how well they sounded and I love the fact, that all the engineers at Abbey Rd., USD regional master tapes which I think what should be done to all the Beatles stereo releases for those who love vinyl records every song on both compilations is fantastic and I think those two albums and also the past masters are the way to go for new Beatles fans for those who want to get more into their music. Every song is fantastic from love me do all the way to yellow submarine and then go in from Strawberry Fields forever all the way to the long and winding road what a great compilation album to support album setsWhat was great to start the Beatles red and the blue albums came at a time when there was a compilation album that was going to be released on TV from the TV and what not which was called alpha and omega and I’m glad that Apple records decided to put a stop to that because when you’re dealing with a company like Apple records you don’t want to mess with them legally I think it’s still a good album and the next album on my list would have to be the Beatles anthology that would be number four on the list of the Beatles best compilation albums What a pleasure to hear two new Beatles songs it was the three of the Beatles reuniting even though John Lennon was murdered I love the fact that they were able to use John Lennon demos what songs like free as a bird and real love, those are some really good songs that start off the Beatles anthology and then to hear some rare recordings that were never released like one song from Stewart that clip and a few songs from Paul McCartney‘s living room from 1964 so that was a fantastic thing to hear and this was the first time I had heard of the Tony Sheridan recordings I had never heard them before that made me want to get the Beatles with Tony Sheridan which I have on CD and vinyl. It’s great to hear my bunny cry for a shadow and ain’t she sweet and I love hearing the live performances from Sweden from the Shell which they performed with a queen in the audience and the Ed Sullivan show and the show from Sweden which is six numbers and all The Beatles anthology albums are great especially hearing me out takes the highlights for me would have to be take one of tomorrow never knows and also hearing three different versions of Strawberry Fields forever which is great and then on volume three hearing the song because from the Abbey Road album A cappella it was fantastic and then ending the Beatles anthology double CD sets with the end is great especially tacking onto the piano part of the day in the life which is great and I think the Beatles anthology would have to be one of the best documentary DVDs ever because it’s the Beatles telling her own story. My third favorite Beatles compilation album it would have to be the Beatles yellow submarine song track I think hard am I in Capitol used the songs that were used in the film from the Beatles it would’ve been a good album but I love the original version two but I think the yellow submarine song track surpasses the original at every level, including Bing remixed which I think for the first time all of the Beatles music was right next to using the original master tapes which is great which brings out so much clarity in the songs including yellow submarine and I love the fact that you get to hear John Lennon’s refrain of a life of these finally restored in the remix versionWhen you hear the stereo version of the yellow submarine from the revolver and even on the album itself yellow submarine John Lennon’s response from Ringo’s first line is not there the second line is faded in a manner mix you hear Ringo Starr saying as we live a life of ease John Lennon‘s line is there in the mono mix but not under stereo mix for some reason and I love all the songs from the album including a bulldog it’s all too much only a Northern song and I think all together now is a good song. And also on the yellow submarine song the guitar part acoustic guitar comes in right at the same time as the vocals but in the stereo mix the guitar comes in a little bit late. That is a really good compilation album and if anyone wants to take a deeper dive into the Beatles music besides the Beatles past masters lines one and two in the red and the blue album is the next album for those are new to Beatles music it would have to be the Beatles one compilation that’s my second favorite beetle population I love that album because it has all their child hits since they had seven number one songs in England and 20 in America so you get a worldwide domination of Beatles number one. All the songs are great not just from the 2000 release but I even love the 2015 remixed version which is a little bit different including hearing the drums and the base on can’t buy me love in the middle same thing with paperback writer as well. And the album was remixed by Giles Martin speaking of Giles Martin he did a great job with my number one all-time favorite Beatles compilation album it would have to be love what a great album that is. There is a really good documentary called altogether now it’s about the making of the surf to Soleil show what a great album that is the Beatles love and I love the fact that not only are all the songs remixed but there are a bunch of mash ups of different songs as well the highlights for me would have to be tomorrow never knows based on the drums using the vocals on with the new without you that is fantastic they could’ve used the whole song within you without you using that and I love the fact that you get to hear a drive my car the Word and what you’re doing all mashed up in one song and I love the strawberry fields forever version because it uses three different versions from the early demo which no one had heard up until this point then using some of the early takes including take seven and take 26 and I love how at the end of the song, George Martin and Giles Martin use other songs as well including the trombone solo album Sergeant peppers lonely hearts club band and Penny Lane and then using the piano solo on in my life from rubber soul then going into piggies along with hello goodbye on top of that the hell up with iPhone calls then I love the here comes the Sun the inner light transition and I also love at the end of come together you have dear prudence and cry baby cry used at the end One of the greatest things that George Martin did before he passed away which was adding strings to the George Harrison demo while my guitar gently weeps that is a great version right there the whole album is great from start to finish Night Shift on CD but on vinyl those are my favorite Beatles compilation albums.

you may have missed this, but "I'm happy just to be with you" was written by George Harrison. Interesting list, "Rubber Soul" would be a tough choice. Abbey road really is the best, Revolver arguably even better. Both albums have that focused group effort. They started doing all their great sounds with Rubber Soul, but Revolver seemed to be the diagram for all of them, with their first albums being a kind of introduction. Nice listing. Thaks muchly.

Naked was, I would have ranked it higher) 07. Sergeant Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band (Not a weak track on here. It’s just a favorite. Not a MOST favorite) 06. Magical Mystery Tour (Same reason as Sgt Pepper. This album has my favorite song of all time, Hello Goodbye) 05. The White Album (I love long albums. These songs are probably songs I listen to all the time.) 03. Rubber Soul (The instrumentation are excellent. There is not a weak track on here.) 02. Beatles For Sale singing doesn't usually get enough praise I think.

I think over the years the top 5 albums have been agreed upon, just the order remains elusive. But here is my top 5, No.1 down to No. 5: 1 - Sgt Pepper 2 - Revolver 3 - Abbey Road 4 - Rubber Soul 5 - The White Album I just think there's too many fillers/throwaways/ordinary songs (plus Revolution 9) on the White Album - should have been a single album. Pepper is my desert island album.
