Former Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands released a warawara (Crested caracara) into the wild on Wednesday morning during her visit to the Rif St. Marie-Hermanus nature reserve in Curaçao. “Yippee,” shouted the princess as the bird flew away.
The princess arrived in the morning at the church of Sint Willibrordus, from where she was driven into the nature reserve. There Beatrix took a short walk through the muddy landscape, with her nordic walking sticks in hand. The director and chairman of the Carmabi research institute told Beatrix more about the area. The princess was then allowed to release the young warawara, who had been ill for a while and was cared for, into the wild.
The Royal Dutch Navy built a bridge between the Hermanus and Rif St. Marie nature reserves in 2021. The princess viewed that bridge, where she learned more about its construction and also the birds in the nature reserve. Finally, Princess Beatrix visited a viewpoint from which several flamingos could be seen in the distance.
