This controller is great, and very intelligently designed. The step sequencer is simply amazing with the encoders. And the CV and gate outs are just the icing on the cake !! They're selling for 100€ so I'm gonna buy one of these soon and control my MS-20 and Minitaur with it !! Great job arturia, for a cheap, well-built and amazing pad controller and step sequencer !!
I just ordered mine. I gotta say, I am so impressed with the concept and the design. I am very excited to abuse this thing as an arpegiator.. I love the fact the form factor, the size, and that it's bus powered. Good work keeping the price down. In the end, that's also why I got it.
Is there a way to sync EXTERNALLY with out using a daw? For instance midi to the usb in. Or is the midi mini jack bi-directional? If like to get multiple beat steps to use as sequencers. Looks great though!
0:50 i am very disappointed not to be able to choose between absolute and relative modes for the encoders on my keylab essential 61, it makes it very poorly usable on FL Studio... Or am i missing something ?
The velocity sensitive pads are perfect, but the knobs suck when I use them as a midi controller in Ableton Live. The sound effect doesn't return when I reel the knob back. Unless somebody has a way to tweak this approach??
One thing i would caution is that some synths, such as the Roland SH-2, do not work with the BeatStep. Even though the SH-2 is 1V/oct from 0-7VDC, the beatstep does not seem to work with it. I like my beatstep, but wish i could use it on some of my old synths
I can use Arturia BeatStep USB MID CV Drum Controller Keyboard Analog Sequencer Synth New for my keyboards playing with keyboards Yamaha PSRE453 Electronic Keyboard Keyboard Roland Gaia SH-01 Synthesizer. What I will need for them for working ? I will need use for them Alto professional mixer ?
can you guys please make a bigger controller with like 32 knobs that can send MIDI over MIDI jack + USB? Aside from the BCR2000 by Behringer, there is nothing like that. Add in the CV stuff from the beatstep or the beatstep pro and you got yourself a really cool controller that can be used to be controlled anything, assuming you can map its knobs like on the beatstep.
i see everyone talking bout the sequencer mode! but i still can use the pads to trigger my drum samples right? sorry for the question i am pretty new to this stuff!
The pads double hit constantly and the assignable knobs jump to random values making them useless. Tons of people still having these issues. I really want to have something like this in the future that works cause it looks really nice.
ihave a drum computer and a synth. I USE NO COMPUTER. HOW DO I SYNC YOUR GREAT CONTROLLER TO THE MIDI CLOCK OF THE DRUM COMPUTER IN MIDI IN AND HOW DO I SEND THIS TO A SYNTHESIZER. THERE S NO MIDI IN !!!!!!!!!!
I'd like to know : is the "big" knob on the left "notched" like the other knobs ? Can I use it to send MIDI PGM CHANGE messages to my soft synths for example ? Thanks a lot !
Really important to me. I did NOT see the reply to this question. Would you please let me know if you received the answer and what it was or where I can find out? PLEASE! Thanks.
For some new-comers like me, make sure you visit or checkout a MIDI implementation chart with the device you are connecting. Each device can and will work separately on different channels. Don't give up unless it really don't matter that much to you. I am not a techie and I am from the zero tech era and I am getting it, so can you. Go! Go! Go!
great video, thanks! I have a question.....is it possible to switch spitfire articulations using an Arturia Beatstep and its pads? It's a device that can send midi instructions, but I'm new to midi configuations and I don't know, for example, what LBS and MBS terms apply to.....I'm using Cubase

i installing everything i need into my windows 8 computer from www.arturia .com and follow directions i need help what's wrong why i have no sound ??? plz advise me
Can I use this to program the sound of an Arturia soft synth e.g. the Minimoog V? I mean use the knobs to change VCF cutoff, resonance, the ADSRs etc.?
Hi Orio! Yes you can switch between the control mode and the seq mode, in the first one you can use the knobs and pads to send generic MIDI messages :)
i really enjoy this beatstep but one thing i cant get my head around, lets say i have a very nice sqeunce going but it just is not at the right timing the tempo is a bit off, i'm losing alot of time fine tuning it at the right tempo using the big knob. is there an easier way to set it to the right bpm/tempo? thanks
I know this is a old video ,&this is an older product but I have a question. Does anyone know if the original beatstep can do an 8 step pattern instead of 16 steps? Aka, can I set the pattern length? (I don't want to run a sequence of 16 steps with dis- engaged steps 9 to 16.
Does this have LED’s around the the Pot’s so you can use it with plugins for mixing? And are they infinite Pots? Is so, this unit might make a great contender to the X-Touch Mini as a plugin controller, with twice the amount of pots. Looking for something similar to the Softube Console 1 but with ability to control plugins from any manufacturer
Arturia Looks like a great product but not much use in my case without the LED’s. Would you guys ever consider making a plugin controller similar to the Softube Console 1 with infinite pot LED’s etc?
You can sync to a MIDI clock, like a sequencer or drum machine, by using a MIDI host device. I use a Kenton Midi Host Mk II. You have to set it to a blank pattern when you don't want it to run audibly.
Not sure but it looks like the sequencer backwards mode has been implemented wrong like on nearly every other sequencer as well. If the forward step order is 1, 2, ..., 15, 16 the backward order should NOT be like 16, 15,..., 2, 1 To be correct it has to be 1, 16, 15, ..., 3, 2 which means it always has to start with step 1 and then going to step 16 instead of starting with step 16. This then allows all the down beats to remain on down beats, and off beats to remain on off beats. so it does not mess up your rhythm.
I bought a Beatstep and today I sent it back...stay with x-touch mini, don't buy this cheap stuff...you can't use it fast...the MIDI2LR doesen't support something in this midi. You can use it with MIDI2LR but you will freak out :)) If you put +2 exposure for a picture in lightroom then move to next picture, the exposure is on 0(by default) but if you turn the knob to increase the exposure it will start from +2 because the last set for the knob was +2...some weird shit
Hi, I suggest you to get in touch with our support team with this link: www.arturia.com/support/askforhelp I’m sure they will be able to help you :) Best regards.
Hi everyone The Beatstep was my first hardware sequencer. I bought it presuming I could send multiple sequences to each of my hardware synths. Quickly it turned out the Beatstep didn't do that. One sequence for all. A beginner's mistake which almost made me sell it. However I didn't sell it and now I'm thinking of giving it a second chance because I kind of like the way it works. One thing just keeps puzzling me though, and I can't seem to find a straight answer anywhere. I hope you guys can help me out. In the MIDI control center you have the option to change the global (MIDI) channel but also the CV/Gate channel and the sequencer channel. Do these options give me the possibility to send a separate sequence via MIDI to one synth and another separate sequence via CV/Gate? And if so, how exactly do I set this up? Many thanks in advance Cheers Ruben Modify message
I don't own a beatstep, but I suppose you could if your synths have MIDI Through, you could daisy chain them together on a different channel on each of the synths. MIDI Through sends MIDI messages from one piece of gear to another, they just have to be on different MIDI channels, you just need to have a different channel running on each synth with a different sequence for every channel/synth.
ok so as far as I understand this thing cannot be synced with any other hardware? So you can use this to play a tune on say your ms-20 mini or other hardware synth. But why wuld we care because I cannot sync it with any other hardware like an akai mpc or machinedrum. I f i want to do that I have to use a computer instead which kinda defeats the point of having a hardware step sequencer. this feels so stupid it must be deliberate.
Yes you can, hold Shift + Channel down then hit pad 8 to set a pattern length of 8, or hit pad 4 to set a pattern length of 4, etc. See page 31 & 32 of the manual.
@@abulka already found it looking more carefully in the manual. Just took a me a while. This beatStep is amazing. I'm just missing being able to change midi global without a computer, so I can use different channels for controller and sequencer. A must for Blofeld multode. Next weekend planning to amend this! Thanks so much for answering ;)
@@aki_gong6271 Yeah I’m impressed by the design of the beatstep too - am driving my Behringer Neuron synth with it (bought them on sale, together today!) Can’t seem to find a way to hold/latch a note though, which is disappointing since I want to drone a note. Also tomorrow will try to figure out how to use the cv outs to control the neuron synth. Also pads are not as sensitive as I’d like, though for the price they are pretty good.
@@abulka I used it also along with the Neutron :) For drones you can use the vca bias on the Neutron, or maybe play with low BPM sequence from beatStep plus some pretty long envelopes ;) If I'm not wrong, gate can also be tweaked to make it last longer with shift + 1st encoder but I guess you may need to play with envepoles and low BPM sequencing.
As an owner of an arturia minilab I've been hugely disappointed with its performance .I use ableton ,reason and even arturia spark to name a few ...love the size and style of it but the encoders are shocking and impossible to use in a live environment.they have a mind of there own.arturia have been hopeless .they have ignored the forums and endless complaints about the controller.I was really interested in the beatstep but don't know if I should take the chance after the minilab disaster
Midi out is a bonus - but the pads are a huge disappointment - no aftertouch? wtf? After using the Quneo with 3 continuous controllers per pad I was prepared for the limitation of only one - but just a switch? why?
I need help setting this up in the midi control center and there is literally zero anywhere. Problem is people make education device videos like this assuming you understand the midi control center and they make educational videos about the midi control center assuming you know how to use your device. It's a very frustrating catch 22.
@@esl4058 man I thought I was the only one mad about this. I have tons of devices used for electronic music but I just started doing it this year. I gave spent a week trying to get this thing to work with an akai mpx8 to trigger samples and there is no help ANYWHERE. I could ask people in facebook groups or forums but I know all I'd get is sarcastic answers, people treating me like I'm stupid for not knowing how to use something I never fucked with before, or a bunch of people telling me to read the manual...which I have about a thousand times now...the issue is if you're not familiar with this at all or in any capacity the instructions arent in english. Every tutorial about this on youtube just has people plug into stuff and it works without going into detail on what they did to make it do that.. the opposite of a tutorial really. They show you how the sequencer works once you have it all mapped out but not how to map it. I gave never came so close to tossing a piece of gear in the trash tbh... I bought this to do one thing and I cant get it to do that so...I guess I have a seizure inducing paper weight.
This looks like a great product. Some thoughts: - Video quality could be better (it's 360p for me), good video none the less - Shuffle/Swing control would be amazing - Different time signatures - Different velocities for the steps, or maybe just accents I want one! I think in the future you could really expand on the midi sequencer concept. Does anyone know of any other hardware MIDI sequencers?
The Yamaha Tenori-on (original and Orange) can be used as a 16 channel MIDI sequencer. I bought a Tenori-on demo unit exactly for this feature to eliminate the need for a computer based sequencer. I'm looking forward to getting Arturia's BeatStep as soon as possible as well.
KWHCoaster That actually looks pretty fun to play with, will check that out. ***** I think from those you mentioned the Cirklon would be my ultimate wish, but it is way to expensive for my current situation. I put it on my wishlist :). Thanks for your suggestions guys.
morfu Lots of fun. I really like the "Bounce" mode of the Tenori-on /watch?v=YRPcbX0rktc All of the different Tenori-on play modes give you a lot more possibilities than just normal step sequencing. With the Waldorf Blofeld having 16 parts, each layer of the Tenori-on can play the respective part on the Blofeld. The parts and layers correspond to MIDI channels 1 thru 16. The Blofeld does have limitations though, depending on the Blofeld patches being triggered. Here is a little test of mine /watch?v=zUZ_wY6eJ8o I tend to use the Tenori-on rotated 90 or 180 degrees to get the cabling out of the way.
Is it still like... good to go in 2022? Will I run into problems trying to use it with a modern(ish) Mac and that latest macOS? Is it one of the driverless controllers that don't really get outdated? Sorry that I've chosen you to bombard with questions lol.
@@mrhobs don’t waste your money bro you’ll just want a better one I was a newb when I wrote that considerably a more expensive controller is the arturia keystep pro, with music gear don’t buy cheap stuff cus you’ll regret it when you get better, there’s nothing wrong with arturia gear they make solid products but this controller is so limited, but if you like drum pads get the beatstep pro, beatstep and pro is class compliant meaning it should work straight out the box, as a ready to go midi controller modern computers understand midi very well
@@minisoda1914 Thanks guy, I definitely agree with that philosophy... about not cheating out on equipment. I usually either go all in (as far as my budget allows), or as cheap as possible, and this... yeah, probably ain't it. I am still however considering paying around $60 for the very basic but apparently very nice feeling Akai LPD8 (Wireless refresh, no, I won't be using it wirelessly) because even if its super limited, it'll still be a good while before I outgrow it, and it could be a good little extra set of controls for a daw even if I get something nicer. Or I can sell it, whatever, not a big loss. I guess I'm mostly wanting to do a bit of super basic drumming, so the sequencer... yeah, no idea what do do with one yet. Watched videos and I'm just left unimpressed with the result. Like, yay... I can let a computer randomly spit out notes that sound dumb... haha, I'm sure I have much to learn. Yep, I have cheap decently large midi controller keyboard already, so was basically just wanting some extra light up buttons to play around with... see if I can get inspired by tapping some beats. (That said I'm somewhat tempted to get a super complicated pro piece of kit, but... I got other hobbies too, so not sure I can sink the rest of the year into just that. Guitar, filmmaking... video games... and... others... too.) Almost Heroes reference. You should watch that. Heh. Also this is long because I'm at an actual keyboard so its easy to type a bunch. K, thanks for reading, later!
@@mrhobs yeah no problem, an akai drum pad might work great they seem to work out for a lot of people, I think it’s essential to have a keyboard to add some personal character when playing which is why I suggested that, but yeah an akai drum pad may be just fine, the way I look at it I’d rather have one thing that works really well versus many things that are mediocre and take up space, but that’s me, it’s kind of impossible to suggest a definite product or set up because everyone has different styles of working
I've been smashing shit in midi control software and still get it to do nothing. If you have no experience with this kind of thing or midi at all their instructions arent helpful.
