The beginning of this film is brilliant, and there are flickers of brilliance throughout. I mean, this is Ari Aster after all. No one questions his filmmaking capabilities. Ari Aster managed to film a panic attack and he nailed it. I just think that, at some point, this was masturbation (for lack of a better word). Ari is exploring things, and I am glad he had the opportunity to do just that, audience be damned, but the problem is we're the audience. Anyway, I love your show and Bill's shitty keying just adds to the charm. Big fan!
My review of this on Letterboxd is "I get the distinct feeling that someone might have some mommy issues." so I do have to agree with Bill on this one.
@@6of1bill Yeah, and I have a bit of a weird relationship with Ari Aster's movies, as I always seem to love large parts of them, but never love the movies as a whole. I'll always keep watching them as long as he makes them though.
Did you feel like Hereditary and Midsommar fell apart as you went, like you felt with this one, or was it just you liked certain ideas/execution and not others?
@@6of1bill With Hereditary I loved the first half or so, but then when it was all revealed to just be some satanic cult stuff I thought that was just such an underwhelming idea and just wish they'd come up with something more creative and unique. With Midsummer I loved the vibes and tone of the whole thing, but I don't know, something just didn't really click with me in that one. I don't think I really ever felt invested in it maybe.
For me, Hereditary felt like a genre horror film where all the characters were real and three dimensional and that made the ending work for me. I guess I’m saying, I’ve seen that sort of ending in other films, but I never cared about the characters as much and that’s what made the film stand out. I didn’t like Midsommar as much, but there were a ton of moments that stuck with me afterwards.
Overall I think I side more with Mr. Six on this one. I think the first part is brilliant, and then the movie just sorta gets worse and worse. I did like the chunk it the mother's house too though. But in general it was just too long and drawn out and so much of it wasn't very interesting to me.
Dare I say the banter is likely to be better than this movie. It would be great if you recorded a full length commentary to accompany a movie one day (The Only Way Out Is Through being your musical foray). I for one would find it highly entertaining : )
