ITS ALL GONE... Well, almost.
G'day, lets explore whats left of the Beaudesert Railway.
Opened in 1888, the Beaudesert Railway was an integral part of the expansion of the Scenic Rim area.
The last Queensland Rail train ran in 1996.
Theres still some track, if you know where to look. most of the bridgework is hidden from view and overgrown.
I hope you enjoy watching this episode as much as I did creating it.
Be Safe and we'll see you down the road.

Good work Pete! And the drone footage is extremely well done. Great to see more people doing local history content.

I'm on the work crew that maintains the grass on sections on the line on a semi regular basis. They are lifting the whole line for a conversion to a “Rail Trail" for walking and riding. With the lifting starting about than 6 months ago.

Thank you for the fond memories depicted by the beautiful drone shots. My wife and I travelled on the great tourist venture from Logan village to Beaudesert shortly before it closed. My good friend, Percy F. was the driver at the regulater of the fine old steam locomotive. So sad to see the well patronised excursion closed down. Another Queensland icon lost.

With the way Brisbane is expanding the corridor will eventually be needed again for an urban passenger service

It won't be the same alignment, the plan is to break off the interstate line and join the Beaudesert line at Veresdale.

Housing developments going on around Beaudesert I'm told + existing housing developments around Logan Village. Thus line & formation should be mothballed for a future passenger feeder line to Bethania. However a retirement village was built on top of the formation at Waterford, go figure. Politicians can see past the next election cycle.

Five million was spent prior to the year 2001 Centenary of Federation. They ran steak train trips until farmers were complaining about grass fires so it was closed. The six fully maintained Rail Motors at Ipswich could have been used but Newman ripped up the level crossings and now it's a multi million dollar job

Nice video. I was lucky enough to drive stock trains to Beaudesert with Qld Rail until it closed in 1995. There are rumours about the line going back to Beaudesert in the future travelling via the interstate line to Just south of Kagaru cross country to Veresdale then following the old line into Beaudesert (see tmr website Salisbury - Beaudesert rail corridor study).

We had something like that here in Mackay. Mackay and most of North Queensland didn’t get hooked up till the mid 1920’s. So first of all a railline was set up going through the pioneer valley in the 1870’s and 80’s to transport sugar from the plantations. It was still Cape Gauge like the rest of Qld till the 90’s and when sections started getting sold to the mill. My grandmother used to catch a train upto the Finch Hatton show on it. Unfortunately the line was sold to the mills and switched to 2ft Cane Train Lines. We ran the last steam train in Queensland in Mackay and now there’s a BB18 Quarter class sitting there mostly restored waiting to be fired up again
@TheHandgunhero
@TheHandgunhero 4 месяца назад
@uncle7162 Those BB18 1/4 locos were sold to Downssteam in Toowoomba 2 years ago. One is operating under its own power and the other is yet to be transferred and restored. My godfather Bob Duvelle worked at the Mackay Heritage Railway project for 25 years until his death 3 years ago on 1079.

Surely it be able to better serve the growing community if it came in a little further noth to service Flagstone and Jimboomba as well. If it were to do this, it would help make it more financially feasible as the large and growing population in those suburbs would increase passenger numbers.

Thank-you Pete. I live at Tamborine. I have an avid interest this historic local line. I have searched google earth and visited most of the spots featured in your video. Beaudesert council have torn up the historic railyard and most of the livestock pens for "local improvement"...unfortunately. To me this feels like a disrespect for our predecessors. Thankfully the station is still there for now. The drone views offer a very nice perspective. Cheers and thanks Pete, Brad.

Good quality drone footage. I remember this being a working line and also the Bi- Centenary attempt to have it operate as a tourist line. I have walked parts of it, and recently much of it was walkable following the line and sleepers being ripped up. Since this summer rain, much of it is now overgrown. I walked a few km of it last week, south of Jimboomba. Let’s hope that money is forthcoming from all levels of Govt to turn it into a rail trail. This has been mooted for years, but seems slow in development. Note the popularity of the BVRT and the new NRRT. It would be a great asset for Logan/Scenic Rim . Maybe you could follow up with a similar coverage of the few remnants of the Beaudesert - Lamington/ Rathdowney line - an interesting history.

Considering the increasing urban spread along the corridor south towards Beaudesert, I have always thought that it was very short sighted of the State Government not to upgrade the Beaudesert Railway into a commuter line, reducing road traffic from the nearby highway. They built a brand new line to Springwood and built a long overdue line to Redcliffe. Why not Beaudesert?

Beaudesert would be better served by connecting the line south of Veresdale to the standard gauge corridor, providing a more direct route to Brisbane than via Bethania. On the other hand, Bethania/Logan Village/Tamborine Village might be worth resurrecting one day soon, although a couple of kilometres of line south of Logan Village is now a street.

It looks like most of the land is still reserved. As Brisbane inevitably expands It may want to reestablish some of these old rail lines. However I see in some places there are houses close by and it is very narrow (1 Track). So a railway on this land would upset those people living close by. Very professional looking video - well done!

It's a sad sight to see an abandoned track in the middle of nowhere. Forgotten. As a kid, being driven past some of these old lines I think about what it was like with the trains still running along them. Personally, I think they should fully dismantle the lines or put them in some historical protection scheme.

I've often wondered why, at Jimboomba, a new bridge over the railway formation, for the Mt Lindsay hwy service road, was built? The bridge was built years after the closure of the line. If the line was never intended to re-open, then filling in the cutting would have made more sense, than a bridge, which will require maintenance in the future.

I attempted to follow and photograph the Fassifern Valley rail line Boonah and Mount Edwards line) but very little evidence remains other than a couple of buildings and the earthworks, No tracks or sleepers remain. Hi Jeremy, You are right there is very limited info on the web, however as a train geek, I am aware of good info out there. A book called “Destination South Brisbane” by the Australian Railway Historical Society (ARHS) has a section on the Canungra and Beaudesert branches. Also the ARHS had magazines which had articles on these too, but probably would require a visit to the John Oxley Library, but I do understand not an easy thing to do. Thankyou for letting us know what is remaining of that branch line.

This is the first ive heard of this line. Such a crying shame that near sighted politicians have decided to rip up all the old lines. Imagine how much better our public transport would be if all the old rail lines were somehow magically restored. Imagine also if from beaudesert, the line was extended just a little further west to link up with the main line at bromelton. I’d imagine that if the rail line ran along Camp Cable rd, It is likely that the Americans built a siding to service Camp Cable during WW2.

Considering the amount of vehicular traffic between Brisbane & Beaudesert, It is imperative that this line is rebuilt and opened up to the public! As the governments want us to go "green" and use public transport, then this railway line and others around the State must be reopened as the best alternative option.

Hey Pete i am from NSW when i watched the video first thought i had in mind was if there was a club or a group what you could do is restore and rebuild the longest piece of the line where the bridges are get a couple of locomotive's and build a engine shed at one end to store them and offer rides to the general public up and down on some of the line like what they have done here at the ZIGZAG railway i am sure family and kids would love that experience and it would keep some of the line from being demolished if i had the money i would be the first person to come up and make that happen just a thought
