That is some of the prettiest raw lumber I have ever seen (and I'm from a logging area), absolutely adore hickory and maple is really pretty too.....love your channel, please keep making all of your awesome videos!!!!

Man that is wonderful stuff, I love Hickory wood. I made an archery bow out of PIgnut Hickory when we lived in SC, still have that bow after more than 25 years the thing still pulls around 40 lbs..I like the colors and patterns in different woods, mother nature never ceases to amaze me with what she does with wood.....Keep up the good work and be safe..
We never dulled a chainsaw with hickory. But then, we didn't have a chainsaw. One and two man Bucky tooth saw was the name of the game. Hickory would make a body tired.
That's a beautiful piece! Make a table or two with it, sell it to somebody in Caifornia and make your money back on the big-assed bandsaw. Thanks, guys! Edit: There's a hickory here that has a fungal infection, and it'll have to come down in the next couple of years. I'll miss the shade, but there's bound to be something just as fine inside.
If you polish the aluminum the wood will slide a lot easier ! But you will need to tighten the clamps a lot tighter 💪. By the way I love your Lil piece of heaven 🙏 you and family are truly blessed thank you for sharing your videos !!!
I am not sure if your sweet gun tree is the same as a Redgum. If so, it is used by many furniture companies to fabricate their Dinning room chairs. It is a beautiful wood. They would stain it to a walnut, pecan finish. I really enjoy your videos. Thanks for doing them.

Another great video! And some beautiful slabs! I finaly got my LT-10 set up...twice! LOL, wrong the first time. So far I've only had the chance to saw an 18" white oak, 14' long to make a floor for my traler. Watching you makes me want to get back at it. Anyway, Fall Line, as I said, great video!

Beautiful slabs although still got a learning curve on the handling and positioning. That chainsaw looked as though it had some trouble also. Probably could have used a good sharpening before starting the project. But you are learning and each time i see improvement. You will get it figured out soon enough.
I know this is a year past when you posted this video but some railroad tie tongs would help a lot when trying to turn a log. There's only so much a cant hook can do.
Wow! Really nice piece of hickory. Wouldn't specialized industries or commercial purchaser would like that ? What did you made out of it ? Wouldn't inserting wedges as you go through with the blade would reduce the shaking of the Woodmizer as it cut ?
Ian Martineau I haven’t made anything out of it yet. I am sure there is a market for it somewhere. I don’t know if that would help or not, it would be difficult to get those wedges in, take a lot of time, and I don’t know if it would help because hickory is extremely hard anyway. I think my best bet is just to slow down. A different pitch blade would definitely help me. Thanks for the comment!

Wow you work hard but that beautiful wood makes it all worthwhile. One thing you might try is to start out by turning the log 90° to the way you had this log oriented for the first few cuts. This will bring the width of the log down to something your mill can handle. Next turn the log 90° so that the flat side you just cut is against the vertical uprights. Now start slabbing the log as you did in this video. You will have only one live edge but you will also be able to book match the slabs that you do have and the overall width of a book matched pair will be greater. That's a whole lot more turning of the log so you might want to wait for help. LOL
I'll try to figure out how to send the link to you but there's guys that polyurethane chunks of wood like that.... and they make bar tops.. tabletops ...whatever you want out of nice woods like that... It's like a polyurethane and it comes out really nice.. like a clear smooth coat over it and then like in the cracks and stuff you can put like blue purple red whatever you want color's ...it's actually pretty cool...
What angle blade did you use for the harder wood, or was it the same one you use for pine. I'm playing around with some different angle blades to see how they do. Thanks!
I've milled a fair amount of hickory with my BSM. I'd be willing to bet you, changing to a different degree band wouldn't make much difference in that log. "Head shake" is something you will get on wide mills with hard wood on a smaller BSM, no matter what degree band you use! SR
Boy, I would pay pretty decent money for some of the wood you are milling. In my wood shop I have a Laguna 16" bandsaw that I can resaw up to 11". I use a bimetal blade that lasts well in hardwood. I even used a carbide tipped blade at times for really hard species. However, carbide tipped blades are really expensive, but the cut can be really smooth.
That right there is why A. I'm buying a mill. And B. I'm getting a 36" cut capacity! Won't be a Woodmizer as it would never pay for itself in my limited use but I'll be doing slabs like that and end grain slabs with mine.
I'm disabled between back issues and a double quad tear two years back. My back tells me the chainsaw mill is a no but if I take my time I can do some urban logging and should have it in me to complete a bandsaw cut anytime. Just nailing down delivery details more now.
the biggest problem with mills like these is 1 the main frames and carriage are made very light and flex to much, with should be welded down to a 10" I-beam and bolted to a concrete slab in order to get even and strait cuts, some mfg make them out of formed tin witch is even worse, 2 the blades are far to narrow giving far to much flex and not holding up, soon as they dull just a little you get a up words start cut and waves, any commercial band mill you look at they are on a 16" I-beam bolted to the floor, never moved, the carriages are made out of 6x 8, 1/2" wall tube, and use a 1-1/2" and 2" wide blade, I looked into buying one that had hydraulic, (I broke my back at work years ago, got cut open) with no other add on's like computer desal and the cost was the price of a home for that wood mizer, but as a welder by trade and mfg no way could I see that value in the mill. for the same money I could buy a good size grapple skidder witch has a whole lot more to it then one of these mills, and that's just the mill, but to do it right, you need many other things, from killins, storage buildings, a good size tractor, rollers, metal strapping unit, ( with out it the boards cup) I have a hydro boom truck I paid far less then that mill they demo me, you need a few cases of blades on hand, you need a good inventory of parts that normally go when used, list keeps going you cant keep customer waiting, you don't buy a mill like that price to only use a hand full of times a year, it would have to pay for it self in the first six months, that goes for any thing equipment related ,, I just cannot see that value in them, hell you can get a really good car for less then a 1/3rd that price, a fire wood presser is far less. it boils down to a fad, demand, supply, I could build one 10 times better for a couple thousand in less then a week part time that would be 100 times that unit, like they cant even make a proper log bed , log truck have a bed 30 times that just to carry them never mind rolling them, the welds are crude, there is nothing to them, and everything is extra, even a de-barker, witch should be standard. made cheap hell, and not just wood mizer just the others get far worse. like them kit mills, I wouldn't cut brush with one, they are all way under powered every brand ,, I have look them all over really good trying to find that value, it is not there and no were close buy people will pay it and not bat an eye so today they are even a lot more then back in 2001, was 68,000 cnd just for bare bones today add on another 20,000 + shipping +13%hst + 10,000 for a few add-ons, yes I hate the cash grabs today

Road warrior It’s just a simple three point boom pole. They are available at places like tractor supply. I have no idea where in the Caribbean one could be found. I believe the one that I have was home made.
My apologies, I did not answer what you were asking. I'm not sure where the log dogs that attach onto the pole came from. They are very available. I'm sure he could find them on Amazon or elsewhere online.

I think that I would have tried more to use the power of the tractor to help to position the log on the saw. I could see several times where if you had the log balanced from the hooks that you could have turned and positioned the log more easily.. Especially when you are working alone.. Having the muscle power is not always the answer. Also , some woodworkers might be willing to buy those cutoffs that you seemed to be tossing aside as scrap. One man's junk is another man's treasure. " For sale , 107 year old pieces of natural hickory , for wood carving or turning , make an offer . " " For sale , hickory wood chips for BBQ smoking . " Hickory sawdust can also be used for smoking if you devise a method for catchment of the sawdust. I do not know what your source of income is . Perhaps you do not even need these ideas ? Hickory is good for smoking meats. When I want a milder flavor I use apple wood. I have a branch chipper so when I prune my apple trees in late winter or early spring , I chip up the branch trimmings. Of course I then have far more than I can use. I sell a five pound bag of apple wood chips for $5.00. Which is cheaper than Lowe's , Home Depot or even Wal-Mart. But , I'm happy and my excess apple wood chips do not go to waste. As a last resort they go into my compost piles.
