"Hexagons are the bestagons" - You are not just beloved for being understandable, straightforward, making inspiring and fun projects that feel sustainable without being strangling... you're also absolutely awesomely nerdy.

I think you are one of very few people who can look at Vincent's dressing gown and say "This was made by a sensible man who made sensible life decisions"😆

Quilt guilds will usually gladly take scraps, or have a person in the guild that will take them. Lovely job on the paper piecing. Thanks for the video.

My scraps are currently sorted into 3 categories, and they work well for me thus far. 1: Enough for a garment, goes back in the regular fabric stash. 2: Enough for a smaller project, goes into the "useful scraps" bag. 3: Too small for anything at all, goes in the fabric trash bag along with threads and yarn ends and will probably end up as stuffing in a pillow/cat toy/bum pad etc.

I have about the same arrangement, with a 2a category for fabric that can be pieced with similar fabric for linings, etc.

I had heard of English paper piecing. And I had heard that it involved sewing the paper into the quilt. I was really wondering how on earth it was ever comfortable with paper in it, or washable! The fact you take the paper out totally did not occur to me 😅 So I am glad you have educated me!

After years of hoarding scraps (even from my late grandma) I finally took the time to sort them this fall and am currently in the process of making quilted patchwork stockings for my family with scraps that are about the same size as your hexagons (and bigger - everything that's smaller than a finger had to go). I have never made a patchwork or a quilt before, so this is an exciting new project, but since I'm not entirely new to sewing, it's going rather well, and I'm having great fun. After years of questioning the point of keeping the scraps, I'm now so glad I did because my finished quilts are so unique, and I'm really looking forward to creating more of them in the future! The paper piecing you showed looks wonderful - I might have to try that one day as well.

Oh, the stockings sound like a lovely idea. I actually still have scraps from my late grandmother, too. They probably date back to the 40s.

*How do you do this to me every time? I think "this sounds like something cool to play in the background while I do other stuff" and I just sit, transfixed! *Also, I have to say (as someone from a family of hoarders) thank you for giving Official Permission to toss old scraps we won't ever use! *I love that you decided to "go for chaos!" 🙏❤🏳‍🌈🏳‍⚧🟦

Big mood, I never want to go back to a million shoeboxes and plastic bags with different collections of stuff in them that nobody will get rid of - I try and keep stuff visible, and if it stresses me out seeing it it needs to go!

My scraps are not sorted at all, but my current plan is to turn them into a crazy quilt. I recently read a book about Victorian crazy quilts, and I was inspired. I like crazy quilting because I don't need to follow a pattern, and I can sew bits of fabric together and then chop some off when I need to. You have also given me the idea of organizing my scraps by color and size.

I vote for scrapmas, and I will be here, absolutely! (I do a lot of small project patchwork, generally triangles, by hand. I've never tried paper piecing, but I am tempted by the hexagons--they're just so pretty.)

Even though you gave me permission I still find it hard to just throw them out! Oh English Paper Piecing I’ve been meaning to learn about that! That doesn’t look too hard. I wonder if I have the patience to do that.

You could speed it up loads by doing fewer basting stitches. The way I’ve always done it is just 1 long stitch across each side. Now, I’m doing hexxies that are 1 inch because smol things are cuter but even if you scaled it up, I think you’d only need 2 or 3. They’re just basting stitches after all. When I was a child, all the female members of my family did EPP but we just called it patchwork then in the UK. All of those were done with scraps too , mostly from the clothes they made for us kids.

I love this, but based on my only granny square crochet blanket project ever attempted, I will hate finishing this and it will be collecting dust in the corner I threw it in. Maybe I'll make something small at one point, because it is cool. For tiny scraps I once gifted my nieces a big bag for them to use in crafts or just cut up into pieces. The youngest had a phase in which she really enjoyed just cutting up stuff. So that was well used. So if you have kiddos around, they might like them as well. (I also used scraps to turn into all of the fabric masks, that was excellent stash busting, but best not dwell on that time.)

Your hexagons look lovely, and I look forward to seeing the finished dressing gown someday! If it is finished in only two years you'll have done it a lot faster than me. I think you're the first person to call my dressing gown sensible, so thank you! So many people calling it mad when I only did the construction part by hand... 371 hours isn't too bad, really. (Also, I would have watched this 5 days ago, but I just moved and had no internet for a week.)

Thanks so much for this tutorial! I raided my scrap stash and I started a new project using this tutorial. I also got rid of a ton of stuff that was just taking up space in my craft room. I think my finished project might be my first quilt!

A lot of people are happy to accept scraps of fabric for their various crafts, so check with your friends before you just toss it in the bin! Of course, if your crafty friends won't take your scraps, that pretty much tells you theyre worthless, so... toss that shizzle out

I’m so glad to see this video!! I started an EPP project a few years ago but fizzled out just after I found more of the fabric I needed. Mine’s not a scrappy project, I’m using a group of fabrics released as a collection. I’ve slowly come to realize that I should have used a larger hexagon, lol!! Anyway, just looking forward to seeing your progress. This is a good moment to resurrect my project, I need a bit of something to distract me from snacking. Sewing like this is perfect.
