Cool Forgotten Weapons merch! shop.forgottenw...
The Perrin was an 1859 revolver design originating in France, which was initially an open-frame, double-action-only system. It went through some significant improvements in 1865, including a single action mechanism and a fully enclosed frame for greater strength. The Perrin used a quite modern centerfire cartridge, albeit with a very thick rim (as one can see in the chambers of this example). In 1865, a carbine version of the Perrin was also introduced. It was proposed to the French Army as a military arm, on the basis of offering six shots to the one of the new 1866 Chassepot - but it was (not surprisingly) rejected. A few were sold to French officers individually, though.

Just in terms of looks, revolving rifles have always been my personal favorite firearms. There are practical reasons why they never really "took off," but a part of me definitely wishes they had.

Looking at the general dimensions of the ammunition, I'm guessing it would perform much like .442 Webley, a weak round even for a pistol. In a carbine, anything past 100 yards would be classified as indirect fire in artillery terms :)

I guess at least the carbine barrel may get the most energy from the small cartridge. Problem is, sure your enemy's wound might get infected and he eventually dies- but the point is to make him stop fighting immediately. Still a cool rifle though.
@BeansAndWeens

though while technically correct, 442. wouldn't happen till 1868 so 3 years after the 1865 refit for the perrin. so if anything it could've been a little better than the 442. but considering it's probably a black powder it's probably a little worse than 442.
@grafixbyjorj
@grafixbyjorj 2 года назад
@@BeansAndWeens Whether it's '65 or '68, it's all black powder. I couldn't find loading data for Perrin, but the case volumes look pretty close so it could be lighter bullet going faster or a heavier one going slower, but either way it's in the same ball park. You can see why there was no martial interest, but even as a sporting gun it looks to have limited utility. By the early '60s, you could already get a Henry in .44 rimfire...
@BeansAndWeens
@BeansAndWeens 2 года назад
@@grafixbyjorj or just do away with the whole idea and get a Le-Mat revolver. besides it'd be a heavy bullet going slowly 11mm revolver ammo hasn't been known to be particularly fast, example being the 442, and 455. the entire lighter bullet going faster wouldn't be a massive thing until both cartridge and bullet design improved and then the advent of smokeless or alternate charges e.g. cordite along with a war or two pushed the idea home. besides revolver carbines were a Doomed concept from the start, why have a six shot hand burner that was slow on the reload compared to a 9 to 10 shot rifle that you could fill up on the go?

I believe Colt sold some revolving percussion carbines to the US Army during the Seminole War, but his train derailed into a river when he was bringing back the check from the delivery and he lost the payment. There had been an earlier attempt to sell the earlier Patterson carbine but a chain detonation at the demonstration destroyed the arm of the Army sergeant chosen for the test. There were a few later versions purchased by the Union Army, but troops tended to throw them away.

@DAKOTA56777
@DAKOTA56777 2 года назад
You don't even need gas seal, just a piece of sheet metal around the bottom of the cylinder to shield the user's hand, like Rossi and the Russian MTs-255 revolving shotguns do. Why people didn't do this back in the day, I dunno. Plus the forward sliding cylinder for gas sealing wasn't new, Savage cap and ball revolvers also did that. It's mainly the ammo that the Nagant used that was the new thing.
@DAKOTA56777
@DAKOTA56777 2 года назад
@@SonOfTheDawn515 Well, A: the Rossi is a .45Colt/410 hybrid, it can shoot both, and .45Colt is a hell of a lot more powerful than 11mm Perrin. B: That literally doesn't even matter, you're just making a small shield not enclosing the entire cylinder, the gas doesn't build up pressure, it just redirects it away from your hand. At worst you'd use a slightly thicker piece of metal. (Also since these are black powder cartridges, modern smokeless shotgun shells actually likely, if not _certainly,_ produce more pressure anyway.)

Might I hazard a guess that the reason that the carbine was single action was to make it more attractive for military sales? There was an obsession right up to the middle of WWI with troops wasting ammunition if they could reload and fire too quickly. Hence clinging to single shots long after efficient bolt repeaters came along and the fitting of magazine cut-offs later on. It even persisted into the 60s and 70s with full auto locked out or eliminated on some selective fire weapons.

I’ve often wondered why swapping cylinders, like later box magazines, never became a thing with these carbines and pistols of that time. Was it not functionally possible?
@stevailo
@stevailo 2 года назад
As far as I know it was a matter of weight and bulk. A six shot cylinder is way heavier and bulkier than a 15, even 20 round magazine nowadays or a 10 round mag a hundred years ago. Also every cylinder needed to be fitted to the particular gun it was meant to be used into.
@Horizontalvertigo
@Horizontalvertigo 2 года назад
Also on most revolvers it can be a giant hassle (during a combat encounter) to remove the cylinder, keep all the parts together, and then put back together. Consider also, that on most revolvers you're single loading, if you get caught with a partially loaded revolver, you can still get the thing to fire in short order. If you have the cylinder out of the gun, you have a club. And also just cost, you'd have to pay for all these cylinders fitted to your gun, and then you wouldn't use them 99% of the time.
@jonHErickson
@jonHErickson 2 года назад
If the cylinders could have been made more cheaply, quickly, and of lighter materials then maybe it would have been more common, I’m guessing.

Have you ever made videos on small mobile early artillery? I remember some Davey Crockett movie I saw as a kid where he was on one of those small river boats that basically looked like a floating house where you used poles to move. It had a little swivel cannon used to great effect fighting off blood thirsty savages. I also remember reading about early 1800s fur trapping expeditions where a dozen men fought off hundreds of native Americans mainly with the help of small portable cannons. We always think of cannons in terms of 12 pounders on Napoleonic battlefields or giant ships with rows of brass cannon banging away. But in the Mexican American war the US made excellent use of portable mountain cannons weighing less than 500 pounds including the mount. I remember seeing swivel guns mounted on camels and elephants. Then in the 1600s 30 years war the swedes were famous for their light weight "leather" cannons. I feel like the use of mobile light artillery in wars like Crimean War, the Civil War, and the Second Boer War pioneered independent mixed flying battalions. I'd love to learn about the use of small cannons and how they were applied

At this point even failures in the video shoot are endearing and add to the feel of it being real world and not a bunch of perfect everything and excuses for the guns like many "g and a "style gun writers do. Note to self...add otf switchblade springs to the ejection rod and a miniature timing mechanism for a Gatling gun and a tapered round nosed rod. Lol lift the locking lever and rotate the cylinder, the rod pops in and out of the chambers making a far to complex auto ejection system.

On the topic of carbines and compact rifles, do you think you guys would be able to hunt down a KAC PDW in 6x35mm for a video? I've only seen two videos on RU-vid with it and they're just short videos of firing one at a machine gun range. I was really interested in the gun as a kid when it was announced, but I forgot about it until recently and have been quite disappointed to find that they aren't made and were never really sold outside of a handful. I think it would be a perfect candidate as a Forgotten Weapon. I realize it's a bit off a longshot to ask for, but I'd love to see people develop a growing desire for it again. In today's market, I think it would have been wildly successful.

Beautiful! I love that the rear sight looks like a little bird! 🥰 Strange that it is single action only! Double action should be easier to handle in a rifle wouldn't it?
