Dr Károly Zsolnai-Fehér, i just wanna say thank you so much for giving students like me the opportunity to learn about those incredible things in a free course. You can't imagine how surprised I was to hear about that in that point of the video, because where I study computer science (small italian university) these things are not subject of education and now I can learn about it from you. I thank you so much for this opportunity, free education and knowledge are invaluable to certain people and I am one of those, really thank you so much. I hope one day I can give back the same way offering what I know and maybe making you hold on to your papers while reading my work. Truly, thank you.

This is amazing, probably one of the greatest feats of research I've seen on this channel. It'll probably be a long time before mainstream games can adapt this kind of lighting, but it will be worth the wait. Maybe 2-3 more console generations, not counting the current one.
@sapiently1
@sapiently1 4 года назад
There might not be another generation, as the newest one is so powerful, there is little reason to upgrade. Maybe 1 more generation. But I'm not expert, just a thought.
@QuickM8tey
@QuickM8tey 4 года назад
@@sapiently1 Consoles tend to be sold as loss leading products that keep consumers buying other products from the same company. It's a lot like how supermarkets sell roasted chicken at a loss to attract customers. Except in this case, people aren't buying more food or cleaning products but games or services on the Sony marketplace or the Nintendo marketplace for example. With all that said, I should mention that console sales themselves eventually do turn a profit. There is absolutely a financial incentive to keep making new and better consoles. Consoles are also not sold to be something a home user can upgrade to the next generation either. So there is always a need to buy a new console after a few years. Console hardware is decent on release but it quickly becomes outdated and sometimes may not natively support new technological developments so those have to be implemented in the future instead. Game developers also have to learn how to use the new technology well and that can take years on its own. These are the reasons why I'd expect something like the lighting shown in this video to take a long time to show up in mainstream gaming.

I think the problem with the old manifold exploration technique (MEMLT) is not just that it is difficult to implement. But more problematic that because it is also based on metropolis light transport. And as such the problem is that it causes flickering when trying to render an animation. It only works so well for single images. Seeing actual animated(!) caustics rather than just still images is what is really exciting about the new technique in my opinion.

@Ezekiele Hurley Don't get your hopes up for this in the next 10 years in Minecraft, this sort of thing requires hardware acceleration which isn't available with optifine or java Minecraft in general and each frame still requires significant time and can't be done in real-time.
@thomasmoore515
@thomasmoore515 4 года назад
@Ezekiele Hurley basically games which do path tracing (including continuum shader) cast as few rays as they need in reverse from the camera so that only rays which are needed for the frame are calculated. The result of this process is a very noisey image which they then use a denoiser to clean up - this lets them do path tracing in real time, it's kinda like a shortcut so they can get decent frame rates at the cost of accuracy. The light transfer methods showcased in this video would take much longer than the current method to render and it wouldn't be fast enough to provide decent frame rates, but I imagine over the next few years we'll see some optimisation and better hardware which will eventually make it possible.

I thought BDPT is the best we'd ever get with light transport and we can only optimise this one technique. And then this thing came along. We're on the cusp of a revolution in rendering. A revolution. And it would be a shame if this would take as long as it did to adopt path tracing because this is amazing. We could probably simulate we microfacet phenomena directly, for example.
