I honestly feel a bit validated by this video, because I’ve been doing this my whole life. I always tried to find beautiful versions of everyday items. Everyone else told me “it doesn’t matter” but I’m thinking, you use this everyday, it should be nice. It doesn’t have to be this ugly item you’re forced to drag out of its dirty corner to utilize. It can be something nice, that’s well made, that’s beautiful to look at and fits your style. It can be made of nice materials and not plastic, I always look for eco friendly versions of things as well. I really believe it adds something of value, it makes everyday like just a little more magical. And why shouldn’t it?

I've been doing this for years and it surely elevates one's mood. I have my parents old metal dust pan. You might not think this is important, but I love the ridges on it and how the original patina has worn off some. It's the weight of it in my hand. I also have a wooden ladder and it's made so well. And everything looks lovely in my cupboards or my garage. It does make a huge difference. The fact you get so excited like me means we are probably genetically related. :) (Since this had a great response, I found the dustpan! It's J. V. Reed dust pan and etsy has a whole bunch!!!)

I have my father’s gardening and woodworking tools, a wooden ladder, a variety of milking stools and small utilitarian tables he made. These things are dear to me and when I use the tools, I can feel my father’s kind hands holding them and hear his voice as he taught me (a girl) how to use them. I treasure them and, since I’m 70 and have no kids who are interested, it saddens me to think of where these precious objects will end up. Thanks Rajiv for allowing me to think that someone else may treasure them when I’m gone.

If you're open to it, you can try to find someone to give them to, and so create a parting relationship for the object. Only give it to them if you think it'll be in good hands! A ritual of giving the object to another, to the world.

@@pradnelluru7567 I so agree. Very few places on the internet where such gems are consistently to be found, although they do crop up elsewhere. Love that Rajiv is catalysing connection between so many thoughtful people who see that our material culture is a deep expression of our humanity and capacity to appreciate and create beauty. To @biddydibdab9180, if you can find a way to pass these on yourself it might add to the recipient so enjoyment of these items. But equally, there are the Rajivs and Rajiv-adjacent among us who will cherish such items, especially in that they’re utilitarian, of that you may be assured.

I too change my dishwasher liquid into a beautiful glass bottle. I love the eraser solution! I learned to have utilitarian objects that are beautiful from a Japanese classmate while I studied in Italy. It is a revelation! Your bucket looks and sounds gorgeous!

Rajiv, you make me feel like I am not alone in this world anymore. Sometimes it seems to me, that nobody understands the need to have a beautiful bottle for the dish washing soap and the urge to find beautiful objects for everyday tasks. Even, when it comes to handwriting, most people do not understand, why it is important to me to work on that, obsessing over different capital letters and modifying the way I write them. I love this approach and adopted it years ago, especially with containers. In my laundry room, I decant laundry soap from a clunky plastic container into an embellished glass bottle that originally held a fancy Italian soda. The lovely bottle sits out, and the plastic container hides in a cupboard. The touch of beauty lifts my spirits a bit when I'm doing laundry.

Another option, if one didn't want to risk hammering the metal (for example, if there was a repair that might be compromised, or if the metal was thin) would be to craft a small "braided rug" style ring out of beautiful scrap fabrics. Then the bucket could be set down in the ring and sit stably, and the ring can be hung on a nail or stored in the bucket when not in use and tossed in the wash whenever it gets dirty.

Rajiv, I follow a similar practice of replacing mundane tools with elevated ones. This inspired me to go sharpen and oil my japanese shears, oil my Ed Wohl birdseye maple wooden serving board. I also recently inherited my granmothers coconut coir cube embeded with pinecones. She used it as a pincushion for 60 years. Now it is mine and I gave away my plastic and magnetic pin dish that I used to use. Keep making your corner of the world more beautiful!

Olive oil dispensers have the same little curved tube top AND a gasket to keep it secure in a pretty wine bottle. It also cuts the amount of soap used at a time. One bottle of Dawn has lasted nearly a year for hands, dishes, spot removal on clothes, shampoo and general cleaning. Good tool. )))

I just wanted to say there is no end to my love for this channel. That you do the same thing I do with regard to everyday household items as I do is strangely unsurprising. I am always upgrading my household stuff to make chores more cheerful. I did not know ANYBODY else understood the potential power to uplift one’s everyday life in simply swapping out the regular for the special. I have a stainless steel milk bucket I bought to be my everyday pail. I use Zoflora linen scented household cleaner cause it’s from England and makes cleaning fun. I also use green Fairy “washing up liquid” detergent from the U.K. 😂 I use Orleans lavender and Amber scented laundry detergent everyday for laundry, and instead of clear or common mixing bowls I use vintage Pyrex. I use white vintage percale sheets and use a vintage iron from my grandmother. I use vintage clothespins or some super great plastic ones made in Italy from Amazon as dupes. I use vintage silver cutlery everyday, and vintage ironstone plates and vintage transfer ware “breakfast” cups and saucers. Vintage dishtowels and vintage bar ware for glasses. I use nice Japanese Imibari towels (I know you know what all this stuff is) I have lots of vintage art in frames. Not ugly 70’s one but oil paintings vintage lamps. I use pretty baskets for organizing my stuff, I even have vintage metal trash cans, including a schoolhouse trash can. Vintage sewing basket. I love what you do Raj. In a cold and dark world, your purpose is clear. Ways to add bright, pretty, useful, everyday luxury we can afford (except that washcloth fabric you once shared🤣😂 waaaaay out of my pric range. Hi Rajiv, just found your channel and love it. I am just like you. Having raised in India, I remember the bronze utensils and chattis used for cooking. Copper pot for storing water overnight… using old things makes me so happy and I feel my home is unique, not filled with fake wood and plastic. You are an inspiration.

That brass bucket is absolutely beautiful. Its hard to find cookware made of brass. In my house(in India not here in US😢), we have bronze pots(paanai) and used for arisi(rice) upma(semolina), pongal(rice&lentil medley), kheer(sweet porridge of vermicelli or rice or almonds). Taste will be out of the world😂

I have two old brass buckets like yours. One is dated by the maker on the bottom of 1851. I took mine to the Memphis Metal Museum and they made them flat on the bottom so they don't rock. I see yours rocks a little bit. They are truly beautiful.

Once I was talked out of buying the beautiful black painted heavy iron scissors for cutting fabric, instead advised to buy the cheaper pair with purple plastic. I don't remember the price of either pair, but every time I cut fabric I think of the black ones that got away.

My husband and I have probably had replace our blender 5 times in 20 years....we have 8 kids and everything gets USED. We refuse to get an ugly blender, we shop eBay or thrift stores and get a glass one with a chrome base. Just another small example of raising the aesthetic value of your home!

People think I am crazy for not being able to have ugly everyday things around me. I can totally relate to Rajiv wanting to have pretty scissors, cutting boards, dish bottles, buckets... at home. I am trying to replace the ugly plastic utensils with wooden or enamel ones over the time. I don't thow still intact things away but if something breaks, like a plastic bucket for example, I am buying an enamel one. Way prettier. Instead of plastic brushes I try to get wooden ones, same with cooking spoons and other utensils.

Rajiv, I think your home is such a jewel box because everything you choose goes so well together. They are from a similar time period and style and are sympathetic to each other. My problem is I like beautiful things from all sorts of cultures, time periods and even though they are of high quality, beautiful and are functional they dont sit well with each other in a cohesive whole. Maybe you can do a video about this? I am trying to be more restrained about what I bring into my life, but I have such wide ranging tastes. An individual piece can win my heart in an antique store but at home that piece doesn;t integrate that well with my other things. How does one narrow down their personal style?

You can do so well because of your innate appreciation of beauty from around the world! Let interior design become a little hobby that you learn more about - architecture, color and light, period style, etc. I use a combination of books, the internet, a couple of friends who know much more than I did, etc. Strip it down to what's your home's architecture and period, why do you love it, how do you want to yourself and others to FEEL there aesthetically AND flowing through the day. Form, function, chroma, and SCALE! Eyes likes to dance in a room, and to rest. What's the focal point vs the prima donna (that must be negotiated or there is no harmony!). Keep experimenting with what you have - edit out of a room but store rather than discard at this point... then move around what's left in the room. I've been rearranging stuff for a few years now, and it's fun. I learn more and more all the time -- especially it helped me find a consistent pattern in what I collected and kept over the (many) years. I'm now busily changing out my scissors, soap dishes, irons, bed sheets, per Rajiv ;-) Best wishes.

I have a beautiful brass dish/tray I found in a thrift store for like 3 bucks. It's beautifully detailed and has a gorgeous patina. I holds my pocket essentials when I'm at home: keys, wallet, cell phone, etc. I love coming home and emptying my pockets into it.

Being an artist 82 years of my life and living with family antique collectors was just natural. Watching your video was like looking in the mirror. My thoughts on cleaning have always been your robbing me of my precious time to create, paint, travel, write and be me and be free to explore life. You have taught me a new way of looking at the reality of cleaning with a joyful attitude now. Got myself a new wicker laundry basket, Mrs. Stewarts Blueing, fast drying towels, and dishwashing rags. This. The cumulative impact of handling day to day objects should not be underestimated. For me it’s labels. I don’t want to be yelled at with names, instructions and advertising material when I use a product. Just a quiet glass bottle and some sloshy liquid inside is fine.

Same for tools. Somehow, when I'm using a dollar store tape measurer I'm working to build a stool, but when I use my grandfather's square, I'm crafting a part of my family's day-to-day lives.

New viewer. I'm in my early 70s and took me years to realize why I love antique things (not necessarily expensive, but old). I grew up in Jersey City in an apartment building built in 1895 with pocket doors, the bead board in the kitchen, mantles, a dumb waiter, etc. That was during school time. I spent summers at my Grandparents' farm in PA in their house built somewhere in the early 1800s with the coal stove, no running water, no indoor plumbing and furniture from the early 1900s. I didn't get to take much from any of it, but I do have a 1915 Sonora record player and unfortunately, my Grandfather had removed all of the working parts and it became more of a bookcase, which is what I use it for now. It's a beautiful piece. I do love your idea of replacing utilitarian cheap pieces with old pieces, like your brass bucket. I'm on the verge of subscribing.😁

My daughter ( the female version of you and I went to our area’s largest antique barn and found lots of amazing things. Yes, yes! I decided long ago to use only vintage ceramic or milk-glass containers for food in the fridge instead of plastic ones- not to your beautiful level of things but same concept and it makes me happy 😊

I love your attention to detail. Reminds me of a story of when japan decided to "perfect" fruits and sell them as works of art rather than just a fruit. This was due to the limited agriculture space the country had. Goes to show you can really make something out of a small space if you cared enough.

SPECIAL NOTE: Please consider purchasing Rajiv's book 'The Elephants In My Backyard'. I had the opportunity to read the entire book on a recent 10-hour+ transcontinental flight and can say was surprised by his 'journey' as well as inspired to do better. 🙌 I would like to see the 'shame-hole' in Rajiv's apartment where he hides all the plastics and simulated wood items (toilet bowl brush, dispensers, etc.) found in many homes in America. 🙈

I literally bought a heavy weight U.S. made stainless steel milk bucket to replace the plastic bucket I use to mop my floor.. all because I watched one of your videos 👍🏽

I agree, beautiful things are a delight. As my eye rests on them in my home, they definitely bring joy. It might be prudent to get the bottom of that pail flattened so it's level & have the stool fortified with new hardware (or maybe just screws) & glue. Form uplifts, but function (and safety) shouldn't be neglected & can bring its own comforts. Do you have pets?
