I haven't been able to draw the way l used to because of my hand tremors, but now you've inspired me to try this style of art, keep up the phenomenal work.

Ayy I’m your 100th like I hope you can find a style that works for you and I’m sure it’s hard to look at a positive in a situation that most would see as a negative but maybe your hand tremors will make you create beautiful art that you may not have created before

Italian masters of the Renaissance obliged their students not to erase their ‘ pentimenti ‘, ie their mistakes because they were their first impulse at depicting reality.

Face out of chaos. You help me discover a way to draw my daughter's face. A turbulent relationship. I now see how to capture all those emotions and still have the intimate connection with her through the drawing by using your technique. Thank you.

Honestly, I was mesmerized watching this piece take shape and it has inspired me to be less afraid of using charcoal which I have always found intimidating in my beginning to take up drawing. I have, so far, being trying for realism and avoiding drawing from inspiration; however, using the technique you demonstrated here, I can set myself free to just have fun and stop trying to be so tied to the reference. Thank you.

Same here. I got into charcoal because I felt limited by pencil sketching after many years. It was a disaster. There were many simple techniques that I simply wasn't aware of as presented here.

Absolute, sheer genius on so many levels! As an artist and as a teacher. I am an advanced abstract artist looking to delve into some realistic art. However, every time I try, I fail. And that’s fine, obviously, but it’s nice to finally see something that so clearly mixes the two, and so clearly explains with both academic and casual language what the goal is, what the process is, and the result. You have a gift as an instructor, motivator and artist and I thank you for sharing it with us.

I love how he points out that he doesn't want to recreate the reference piece and so long as its anatomically sound he's happy with that. He has a point because that image already exists in the world so what would be the point of reproducing a perfect copy of it.

I used to enjoy portraiture working with a more realistic approach but with the chemotherapy making me feel very sick and wears me out very often so after watching this I am very intrigued. I could create an expressive charcoal portrait within 20 minutes without wearing myself out. Thank you so much for sharing this, this may be just the thing to bring back my passion for drawing again. 😊

This is So amazing! Like a sculptor finding the statue in the stone. You have married the kinetic energy with classic beauty. The texture, the line, the soft beauty of the image. This is a direction I have been wrestling with since I was young but I never understood how I might be able to marry the two until I saw this. You are a genius. I can't thank you enough for this demonstration.

Although I digital paint, I kind of live by this. I like seeing the face come out of the mess instead of defining the lines so perfectly and painting into them.

Incredible. I love your philosophy when it comes to your art. I like charcoal art but I'm so stringent on the details and seeing you create this was freeing in a way. Makes me feel like I've been using the medium wrong.

It is interesting, inspiring, and very enjoyable watching these charcoal drawings come to life out of nothing. You are watching what looks like a brunch of scribbling and muddy dark spots but before you realize it an amazing abstract image appears. I want to start practicing this technique.

So glad that I stumbled across this video. This work is so beautiful, and so is your process. I found myself watching and thinking that you were showing great restraint by not getting your fingers right into it and interacting that way, and then sure enough there comes the fingers. What I love about this process is the way it permits so much in terms of intuitive decisions about movement and intensity. Sometimes the best thing we could do is get out of our own way as artists and let the piece of work become. I am more drawn to Abstract landscapes than portraiture, but this technique could translate into a variety of subject, and even of media. I am on a tight budget until I get through tax season, but I look forward to Visiting your shop when things loosen up a bit. Thank you for sharing this.

I have been working for years with oil and acrylics, and after some discussion with a fellow artist, we have been doing a great deal of graphite drawings and I have once again been reminded of the importance of drawing. Recently I began playing around with charcoal on canvas as a lay in sketch before painting, only to realize that I love the idea of simply doing the entire work in charcoal. This video has reaffirmed that, and I want to thank you for this tutorial. Love the way you approach a drawing with reckless abandon, something that I have always tried to do as it gives way to such freedom and discovery. I look forward to more of your content, and have subscribed to your channel. Cheers.

Thank you for your ease of communicating your approach. I feel like this style of drawing was a large amount of technique I was missing from the images I've created in the past. Let the light pick areas to expose or emphasize...and as you said the brain fills in the rest. I like the thought of raising audience participation while raising your own skill level. Thank you.

Thanks for sharing what you do, I haven't drawn since I was a teen because of crippling perfectionism in my drawings making it more stressful than fun to do art for me. But here in my 30s after watching your work I've been making a chaotic mess on my digital canvases and then playing around with the eraser and brush back and forth, and it's been so cathartic, truly. I actually enjoy doing these, and just for myself really which is something I couldn't say with my art before. There's something emotionally healing and meditative with this process, can't thank you enough for sharing because the end product alone looks hard to reach but watching you do it gave me confidence to try
