Beavers: A rodent success story

At one time beavers numbered in the hundreds of millions, and like engineers they have expertly reshaped the contours of the continent. But their fur proved valuable enough to trappers that the North American beaver population dropped to near-extinction levels. Now, the plucky rodents have made a comeback, and our environmental health is benefitting. Correspondent Luke Burbank talks with Leila Philip, author of "Beaverland: How One Weird Rodent Made America," and with scientist Emily Fairfax about why beavers are key to a more resilient ecosystem.

Beavers are just about the most important animal on Earth when it comes to fighting climate change. They do so much at almost no cost to anyone.

I once read that beavers have made more impact on the land and water than any other animal, even humans. We have some lodges in my neighborhood and always enjoy seeing them and checkout their dams and lodges. I walked across one of their dams the other day, solid as a rock and helps keep up the water level in a lake I like to canoe. What I most appreciate is how hard they work, I wish had that kind of energy and drive.

i absolutely agree. we have only been here for 100,000 yeras(more on that later). beavers have spent millions of years shaping rivers and creeks to change the landscape around us entirely

I just happen to be reading Leila Philip's book at the moment, in 12/23. It's very good, I'm taking my time and learning more. I only found this YT accidentally. I'd recommend giving her book a try! :)

a lot of states in the mid-west need to repopulate their areas with beavers to make more ponds and lakes to reduce the summer temperatures caused by cities, and other developed areas, to hopefully overtime with increased precipitation from the dams will help fix the great planes biodiversity overtime

Humans should always look to the wild animals for solutions. Greed took over humans. Let these animals live their lives and let them be The are just figuring out that beavers play an important role like every other wild animal.
