How do beavers fundamentally influence water in the landscape?
Hydrology is the study of the distribution and movement of water, and beavers are nature’s most experienced water engineers, managing river systems far longer than humans have.
Beaver wetlands can slow the flow of water through a catchment, reducing the risk of flooding to communities downstream, acting as a vital resource during periods of drought, act as firebreaks in extreme heat and wildfires, and even have the potential to help us restore floodplains, reconnecting these increasingly important systems.
The absence of beavers has thrown things out of balance; it’s time for us to rejoin forces and embrace natural flood management.
Do you know someone whose community could benefit from having beavers upstream? Tag them in the comments!
