In this video, I explain one of the most basic interactions in Idol Showdown (and possibly most fighting games) using the rock paper scissors analogy.

As a person who also started playing fighting games rather late (tekken 6 on psp in 2009), modern games ALWAYS expect you to know fundamentals and put no effort in explaining any of them. Despite the fact that i already know this information NOW (due to maximilian dood), your video is very helpfull for beginers.

GGStrive, Thems FIghtin Herds, and SF6 have fantastic tutorials. In fact, SF6 spends its entire story mode teaching you how to play. For example, there's a rhythm bottle breaking mini game that teaches you about charge moves without putting you in matches. Also 09 isn't late. There's a large amount of people called 09ers that started around that time because of SFIV. It's never too late.

@@MangledStaiD I play a lot of fighting game for the last 15 years already so it wasn't much of a problem for me but it really does affect some of my friend getting into it, making it hard for us to play together

This was "teaching my mom how jump works on Mario" level tutorial, it was a surprise for how basic is honestly. This was really good video that shows people how fighting are actually simple (just hard to beat other players lol) I think this video just missed a important detail about grabs, grabs only works in opponents on ground and air grabs only works in opponents on air, this info help me to understand how to fight against grapplers.

Great work. This is exactly why I mentioned doing your own research at the end of the video is very important. There's always going to be things that individual guides might forget about (whether it's due to lack of foresight, tunnel vision, etc.), but might be mentioned in other guides/resources.

Yeah I think what Idol Showdown needs is a proper tutorial (basics of playing footsies, when to use each attack, important normals and specials of each fighter).

These kinds of issues fall under a much broader topic called "The Neutral Game." The moment where players aren't hitting each other and, in fact, neither is in a comfortable range to apply pressure at will. In the neutral game, the two characters measure each other up and try to create the right situation for themselves while also trying to nullify their opponent's attempts. Using this game as an example. Aki is a very good zoner, she wants you at a more than decent distance to use her special attacks and control your movement, she doesn't want you close AT ALL. On the other hand, Coco is a grappler who WANTS to get close, she wants to be at the right range to perform a good grab. The neutral game starts if Aki is too close to zone Coco at will, but Coco is far enough away that she can't get close to Aki without risk. Many things influence it, such as how risky the movement is, the range of the attacks, trying to bait the enemy into hitting the air or jumping when they shouldn't, etc. And in this, that "Triangle" of attacks, grabs and blocking is very important.

Dude is describing frame data, safe and unsafe moves, hitstun and blockstun. As a little piece of extra info, grabs usually come out a little earlier in frames than attacking, which is where you'll want to know about throw invincible moves, teching throws, etc. On offense in this scenario you'll advance to tick throws and shimmys. And from there you can learn that fighting games are so much fun and there's always ways to get better if you stick with it.

Great video, the information is helpful to new players and the editing is fantastic as well. Some of my friends played this as their first fighting game (it's free and they know a few vtubers) and they don't know when to block, when to attack, etc. By showing them this video, they understand the game (and fighting games in general) much better.

I like fighting games but I am awful at them because I've never gotten over the initial hump of figuring how to actually win. It plays out how you said. I do the tutorial, it shows each individual thing I can do, and then I'm in a match trying to reinvent the wheel. I pick one of the moves, it either works or it doesn't, I get manhandled, and then I try another move. I've managed to infer a lot of what you went over here, but having someone just simply lay it out makes it feel like there might be some hope for me yet.

@@MangledStaiD the way the triangle system works in the dead or alive games is that there are 3 kinds of attacks, strikes holds and throws. strikes beat throws, throws beat holds, and holds beat strikes.

funny how you framed this as if these didn't exist in tutorial.. "go to multi player and get your ass beaten" yes most of existing fighting games are like this but why are you acting as if story mode and practice mode doesn't exist.. i find that weird.. the difference is the RPS methodology which will make you understand the game easier.. but you will learn this too if you actually play the tutorial and the story or arcade mode..

You may have missed the point. Guides like this exist for people who did not learn it from tutorials and story mode. Plus tutorials are tasteless and stories are...(skipped) So RU-vid guides might be more effective for some.
@unluckyfives

Nope. I played the tutorial for this game and tried some of the story. Exactly what he said happened. The tutorial slowly gave me one single thing at a time and then when it was time for a match I had no idea how to actually implement any of that to win.
