Here's my BYTE-sized playthrough of Outer Wilds! Yes, I did steal that pun from a commenter on another video! Ty for that! This game was a huge emotional journey for me because I had been struggling with some of the exsistential themes of it for the past few years. And now I feel way more optimistic about the fact we all die at some point! Thanks Outer Wilds!
If you want to see an extended part of a section of the video, here's where each episode starts from the broader playlist:
00:00 - Episode 1: The Time Loop ( • Let's Play Outer Wilds... )
15:25 - Episode 2: Feldspar and Dark Bramble ( • Let's Play Outer Wilds... )
30:32 - Episode 3: It's a Supernova? ( • Let's Play Outer Wilds... )
49:42 - Episode 4: The Anglerfish Fossil and the Hanging City ( • Let's Play Outer Wilds... )
01:10:18 - Episode 5: The Tower of Quantum Knowledge ( • Let's Play Outer Wilds... )
01:29:29 - Episode 6: The Orbital Probe Cannon and the Quantum Trials ( • Let's Play Outer Wilds... )
01:45:13 - Episode 7: The Quantum Moon ( • Let's Play Outer Wilds... )
02:08:35 - Episode 8: The Sun Station ( • Let's Play Outer Wilds... )
02:34:23 - Episode 9 The Ash Twin Project ( • Let's Play Outer Wilds... )
02:53:06 - Episode 10: The End ( • Let's Play Outer Wilds... )

I love the impact the sun station has. That moment of realization that there's no machine prompting the end of your star that you can stop and the game gives you a few minutes in the station to process that fact. There are tons of great moments in this game but to me, that one is underappreciated. An answer you have been looking for since the beginning and the brutal silence that comes with understanding it.

Canonically, she was launching herself straight into the sun for many many years, every 22 minutes. That loop was happening long before the character gained consciousness. The first death ever is what was happening all the loops the player wasn’t conscious. So in her story the character just went “oooh twins” followed by “oh no, the sun has gravity” about a billion times
@kiiyll
@kiiyll 13 дней назад
Well, in the other loops, the statue didn't activate, so that may have had some effect.
@meow-px6kk
@meow-px6kk 5 дней назад
there was no time loop just the retrieving of the orbital probe cannon's data. the hatchling did not experience those loops, there just was one 22 minute long future that couldve been 9 million times but wasnt because of the ash twin project. however in all of those 9 million possible futures, becca launched herself into the sun lmao
@liamwhite3522

Indeed @@kiiyllmaybe the statue activating on this first conscious loop affected things, but perhaps all it did was delay the sun death by a minute

Such a nice idea to make your own supercut! I had been going through your let's play videos slowly but due to my limited time and decimated attention span these days, I struggle to watch full playthroughs and these kinds of edits are great for that. And now I don't have to wait for someone like Eelis to cut this together.

Aw yay I’m happy to hear that! This is exactly why I wanted to make one, because I have the same issue sometimes where I really like a series but just can’t sit through ALL of it, but when I cherry pick episodes I lose context and get confused. It also feels like a nice little bow to wrap up the base game with 🎀

I have a funny story about the end of the game. So, my first time playing, I didn't actually get the real ending, I just thought I beat the game. I never realized that I could go to the Eye etc, so what I did is that I just took the core and went to watch the Sun go supernova together with Chert. And then I stopped playing, thinking that I was just supposed to let the game be once I figured out what happened to the Nomai and the system. Only a year later when I watched someone else on RU-vid play the game and realized that I could actually get to the Eye, I stopped the video immediately not to spoil it for myself and then went and did it in the game finally (since you can literally beat the game in one loop if you know what to do). In a way I had two different endings to the game, the first time kind of just accepting the inevitable, and then the second time having that beautiful catharsis of starting a whole new universe.
@Huntracony
@Huntracony 2 месяца назад
I almost did the same thing. I read "Removing the core will stop the Ash Twin Project" and thought "No, wait, I don't want it to end! There's so much more to discover!" and left it, but I was fully convinced that would just be the end. When I later visited The Vessel I figured it out.

Def got a new sub in me and awaiting your next series/continuation of the dlc? Hope you do the DLC and if you want recommendations on more geeky games that make you think that are more about an experience/story like outer wilds, I'd recommend Antichamber, The Sexy Brutale, Hypnospace Outlaw, Return of the Obra Dinn, The Beginners Guide, The Stanley Parable, and Oneshot.

This piece of art here has done more to help me and countless others except death and our own mortality more than anything I can think of. The fact that it effects so many people reminds me that we are never alone going into that deep unknowable void. Who knows if we'll be a conscious observer of what is next, but i do believe there is a next no matter what. The rules may change, but as long as some sort of consciousnesses emerges there will be experiences and that is really what life is about. Experiencing life and hopefully sharing that experience with others. Thank you for your playthrough, and adding on to our experience of this beautiful life.

i loved how enthusiastic you were in throwing yourself into the immersion of the game and empathizing with all of the characters and their stories. also love that you didn't edit out your strong emotional reactions, and even kept in some discussions about them (particularly mentioning your anxiety and needing to take breaks). gaming isn't typically a space that welcomes emotional openness and vulnerability, so it's really cool to see more people who are willing to wear their hearts on their sleeves unapologetically. outer wilds is definitely a story that will demand extreme emotional intensity if you choose not to force a layer of dissociation between yourself and the experience of playing it, but that intensity is what ultimately builds the foundation for the unparalleled catharsis delivered by that final orchestral sting as the new universe is born. i'm glad to see another person who opened themself up to that experience so completely.

I am so impressed by how well you picked up everything the game was trying to tell you. When you ended the loop accidentally you knew right away something was probably up and you immediately understood why the loop ended, what the warp core would likely be for and what the next step you needed to take was (going to giant’s deep). The flow of logic was beautiful :)

Your playthrough was amazing, you pick up on things super quick and really let yourself be involved in the story and get emotionally attatched to the story and the characters. I feel like you have the perfect personality to be a Let's-Play-RU-vidr! Since you seem to want to focus on "existential" type games I recommend SOMA but beware, it's not cozy at all, it's creepy and might be kinda stressful but if you're up for it the existential and philosophical questions that game raises are totally worth it. Whatever you do next (after OW DLC), I'll be watching :)

@sajhino
@sajhino Месяц назад
I think it's because she kept trying to match velocity instead of just relying on the initial momentum from the first jump to cross the gap. Everytime she stopped with match velocity, the Sun's gravity starts to win over her. Kinda interesting ngl because yeah, I never see anyone really struggle with this section lol.
@noelthemighty
@noelthemighty Месяц назад
@@sajhino Ohhhhhhh, is that what's happening? I saw Lil Indigestion do the same thing many times over. On the screen it looked like he's thrusting hard to the left and I couldn't understand why someone's instinct would be to de-orbit themselves like that. But maybe it's Match Velocity trying to match.... the sun, I guess?
@silphv
@silphv День назад
@@noelthemighty Yeah it's to do with how orbits work, which is not intuitive. If you're orbiting you actually have to have the right velocity pointing tangential to your orbit (if the thing you're orbiting disappeared suddenly, you'd go flying at a tangent to the circle like a rock from a catapult). If your relative velocity is zero then you just start falling straight down. (When she was velocity matching to the sun station itself, she could mostly stay in place, but the correct speed depends on the radius of the orbit, so dipping below the center of mass of the sun station at all then means that velocity is too slow and you start drifting down.
@silphv
@silphv День назад
It also means if you get too close to the sun or something else you don't want to hit, it's actually way more effective to accelerate sideways and try to slingshot around the side of it, rather than accelerate directly away. The more tangential speed you have, the more the gravitational pull goes to orbital motion instead of falling motion (in perfect orbit all of it or nearly all becomes orbital motion, the force is always pulling at a right angle to the velocity all the way around). You can also slingshot around stars to gain speed for free (without spending fuel, in a realistic scenario where fuel is a thing)
@noelthemighty
@noelthemighty 16 часов назад
@@silphv Yeah i understand the orbital dynamics here. I think the issue here is Becca is pressing match velocity, expecting it to match the sun station, but because the station isn't targeted, it actually matches the sun's velocity. That means thrusting hard to the left to slow her angular momentum.

Everyone gets to enjoy this game differently, and i've watched at least 20 playthroughs to say this hahaha - But the best ones are those were the player connects with the ingame characters like you did all along, recognize their names, their relationships, and all. You noticed the small details, and that made things hit really hard every time you realized the many tragedies that are at play here. Also thanks for remembering Solanum is a 'she', I don't know why but it feels important to me ::) (noticed how Nomais have two genders, but Heartians only have 'they'? such a neat detail of worldbuilding) For the DLC, regarding how you reacted to some of the scary elements of the game, I suggest you enable "Reduced Freight" option right from the start (or wait until you realize why I say that if you prefer, hahaha). The DLC is absolutely awesome, but it gets quite scary. Can't wait to see more of your playthroughs!

Subnautica, underwater exploration with a mystery. Journey, A small art peace of a game, under 10h with visual storytelling. (Anyone here can comment more if they want). Love your focus and commitment for the story that an amazing game deserves. Keep posting im here for it!

It would have been so fucking funny if you said "if it makes you feel any better, we're in a time loop" to chert AS YOU WERE HOLDING THE WARP CORE effectively killing everyone but unknowingly lying to chert because you deactivated the ATP lmao

Wonderful supercut. You look like you really enjoyed the game. Also wow, I've never warped to the Eye right as the supernova happened. Very cool I hope you plan to play the DLC. It's my favorite portion of the game.

No matter how many times I watch the ending, I always cry like a baby :') I recently got Outer Wilds' solar systen tattooed on my forearm so I guess it made me connect even more with the ending this time. I'll stick around to see your full DLC playthrough this time. I hope it isn't long before you record it!

It's already recorded! I'm just knee-deep in editing all of it and recording the intros now :) My goal is to finish a game before the first episode ever goes live just to fully avoid spoilers.

In my own experience with this game, I only worked out the warp towers on Ash Twin long after I'd got the Eye coordinates and found the Vessel, and it's helped me realise something. Solving the warp towers early is seriously such a gamechanger for anyone's playthrough of this game, and it's hilarious that it has no notes in the Ship Logs. It's a big mental note, and helps contextualize a lot of the information you discover later. Obviously there's tons more to find elsewhere in the system, but Ash Twin is kind of the hub point to all of those discoveries. In other news, this video is incredible. I'll be watching through your experience with Echoes of the Eye as well.

great playthrough! honestly made me even teary at the end even tho ive seen the ending like 10 times now lol. if youre ever looking for games to play after the dlc, Return Of The Obra Din is a neat little discovery-based detective game, a lot of poeple say its somewhat similiar to outer wilds too.

Glad to see someone else cried at the end. This game had me tearing up pretty good, and I never really cry when it comes to video games.

The sense of discovery that this game gives you is unmatched and i really really hope the devs do another game either in the same universe or at least with the same design

I like to think of the travelers in the end as the personification of the memories you have of them. Even if they didn't get to go there themselves, they had an effect on you, and thus got to be there through your memories and experiences with them.

Wait it took you 6 Episodes to realize what to do with the loose scrolls? That's hilarious. But at the same time props for figuring out how to get up into the tower of Quantum knowledge. Me and many of the people I've seen on RU-vid took way longer to figure that one out.

There are so much to say about this game and not enough time in the world to say it all. The Soundtrack is perfect, every traveler has its intrument. You, the player? You are the composer of this orchestra, and in the end, you are what brought them to play a symphony. And how it touches the subject of "The end", something we all fear? It teaches us to embrace it with hope and curiosity, not fear and resentment. I lost a close friend weeks ago and struggled with the loss, but this game comforted me so deeply, and now, "the end" isn't somthing i fear any more, its a part of life, and one we should embrace when the time comes.
