BECK'S BOLERO (1967) by the Jeff Beck Group - with backwards guitar ending

This instrumental track was recorded in 1966 by Jeff Beck (lead guitars), Jimmy Page (12 string rhythm), John Paul Jones (bass), Keith Moon (drums) and Nicky Hopkins (piano). I had the extended version of this with backwards guitar at the end as the flip side of Beck's single, Hi Ho Silver Lining (1967). However it is best known as a track on Beck's album Truth (1968), minus this end bit. Here is the complete track.
The following is paraphrased from Douglas J Noble's article written based on his interview with Beck: So how did Jimmy Page come to write 'Beck's Bolero'? 'Well, with some difficulty and largely without me! ..... I went over to Jim's house and he had this 12-string Fender and he loved the idea of using a bolero-type rhythm for a rock record. He was playing the bolero rhythm and I played the melody on top of it, but then I said, "Jim, you've got to break away from the bolero beat - you can't go on like that for ever!". So we stopped it dead in the middle of the song - like the Yardbirds would do on 'For Your Love' - then we stuck that riff into the middle......I was using a Les Paul for the lead guitar and for the backwards slide guitar through a Vox AC30 - it was the only amp I had and it was covered with beer! Actually, I think it was the beer that gave it it's sound! You can hear Moon screaming in the middle of the record over the drum break. If you listen after the drum break you can only hear the cymbal afterwards 'cause he knocked the mic over! Wonderful!'
As I understand it, the track was recorded with all musicians playing at the same time, as Beck is reported to have said there was 'leaking' into one another's microphones. He also suggested that there were 3 or 4 songs came out of it of which only Bolero saw the light of day and one other had a finished melody. No others were released.
Unfortunately there are no videos of the song, or photos of the session, so I have created a slide show for it. Comments are invited on this video but please no 'my guitarist is better than your guitarist'.
UPDATE: Just heard the sad news today (12 Jan '23) that Jeff passed away. So sad. R.I.P.

Recording of this song began in May, 1966. Two months before Cream would enter a studio to record for the first time and five months before the Jimi Hendrix Experience would enter a studio to record for the first time. A very melodic and groundbreaking electric guitar performance. Jeff Beck was truly innovative and ahead of his time. RIP Jeff 🎸

Yes, Nicky Hopkins had precision and stamina to be able to play those insistent bolero beat piano chords for that long of a song. Actually, I find it's oddly easier playing some classical music as compared to the more aggressive rock piano playing (starting with Fats Domino and later Jerry Lee Lewis and Little Richard, then mutated to good effect by Velvet Underground and Brian Eno).

I can go with that. Last year my wife got tickets to see Van Morrison at the O2, but the support act was Jeff Beck and he's still amazing. He was wearing some very blingy bracelets but I expect they are to cover up wrist supports, as he's getting on! He's never been the most commercially successful guitarist, but he still pushes the electric guitar to its limits and beyond, and makes it look easy, as if anyone could do it. Of course they can't.

Agreed, my friend. Could not agree with you more, in fact. This is where it all begins. And the truth of the matter is that this is the original Led Zeppelin. This is not the Yardbirds, this is not the Who, and this is not the Jeff Beck Group. This is the original Led Zeppelin. The date of this recording is, I believe, May 16, 1966, at IBC Studios in London. This is before Cream, this is before the Jeff Beck Group, this is before the Jimi Hendrix Experience, this is before the MC5, this is before Iron Butterfly and this is before Blue Cheer. In this piece you can hear the birth pangs of all the progressive rock, hard rock and headbanging heavy metal that was about to explode in the late 1960s. They recorded one other track I believe (I think it was Hi Ho Silver Lining), but this is the real gem, a sonic marvel of its time. There was talk of forming a band and taking the whole thing on the road, and I believe John Entwistle was to have been part of the new group, can you imagine that. I believe it was either John or Keith Moon who came with the name Led Zeppelin, which is what this new band was to have been called. Then the Yardbirds did a tour, and the Who did a tour and the whole idea was scrapped...until two years later after the Yardbirds dissolved, or should I say, evolved into what would become Led Zeppelin, in the summer of 1968. When you consider how early this recording was, how experimental and how great it was, and what it would eventually spawn, it's not a stretch to say that this is the single most influential recording in the history of rock.

That's certainly up there with "Hocus Pocus" by Focus, "Frankenstein" by Edgar Winter Group, "Red" and/or "Sailor's Tale" by King Crimson, "Interstellar Overdrive" by Pink Floyd, "Soul Sacrifice" by Santana (especially the live at Woodstock version) to name a few great rock instrumentals. I love the spacey, echoed slide guitar descending parts and the fuzz tone on the regular guitar solo. I'm surprised Keith Moon is relatively low in the mix though.

In 1966 Page wanted to form a supergroup with Beck and him on guitars, and the Who's Keith Moon and John Entwistle on drums and bass, respectively. Vocalists Steve Winwood and Steve Marriott were also considered for the project. The group never formed, although Page, Beck, and Moon did record a song together in 1966, "Beck's Bolero", in a session. that also included bassist-keyboardist John Paul Jones and Nicky Hopkins (piano)

Since when has Steve Winwood been merely a vocalist. He is a multi-instrumentalist, and a damn good one, too. He plays guitar, piano, organ, drums, mandolin, bass, and sax. Oh yeah, and he signs too (sounds a lot like Ray Charles), but he's rarely been simply a vocalist, especially in the 60s.

Without a doubt, rock music was at it's zenith in the 1960's. IMO, Jeff Beck is the greatest rock guitarist of all time; Steve Marriott was the greatest lead singer of all time; Keith Moon was the greatest drummer of all time; Steve Winwood is the greatest all-rounder of all time.

I never knew what Rock music could be till then he brought us history from when I was just a small child and didn't know what music really was he brought another era and then even transended this one to me that day. I am also sad that I only found him so late in my life and not when I was younger doing so many other things but I am Grateful I didnt miss it altogether and I finally had that life changing experience. I will tell you this when we get to Heaven There's going to be a hell of a band. God Bless You Jeff and Love You Jeff hope you got to hear what I wrote in the note that was attached to the gift I threw up on stage that Johnny picked up at that concert I meant what I said.
