I originally put together a compilation of all of Jennifer's scenes, but RU-vid blocked it, so here's just her scenes with Mariner. #StarTrek #LowerDecks
This whole show in general seems to have a thing for giving very Earthly, human-sounding names to alien characters - an Andorian named Jennifer, a Trill named Barnes, a Tellarite named Durango…
I think some officers take human names that sound as close as possible to their real names as to fit in. If your name is just a series of throaty gargles and your instructor is an impatient A hole you might consider Jennifer
@@mastermonarch or they might be from a predominantly earth colony where their family has lived for generations. It's not uncommon for people to adopt the names of a culture they integrated into.
They could be mixed- and their alien DNA could just be dominant as far as appearances go, that could be case for Jennifer and Barnes. In Season One I think Barnes said her dad was a cyborg when talking to Rutherford, so her Dad could be a cybernetically enhanced human and her mother could be a Trill, hence how she got the last name Barnes (it’s jerk Dads last name), but she looks like a Trill.
For something that originated from an improv line, Im so glad LD is rolling with it and making Jennifer the Andorian a fleshed out and B-tier character.
Lower Decks has been turend out such a great addition to the Star Trek universe, im so glad they created thie series and Jennifer is the first Andorian who looks really cute.
"I know we're not supposed to have interpersonal conflicts-" Is that a jab at Gene insisting that there is none of that in the first season of Next Gen?
Gene had this idea that people would improve with experience and learning, and rise above all the cr*p that blights so many lives. Enormous numbers of people do not believe this is possible, preferring all the cr*p that blights so many lives. It's really odd to me.
The founding ideals of Gene-era Star Trek are professionalism and putting your personal misgivings beneath the shared mission. These are ideas which postmodern Star Trek - really, all of postmodern society - seems to find unappealing. In their defense, "shared mission" is the very idea that the postmodern world is disillusioned with; after all, even our military, which should embody that idea above all and is where Gene likely fostered his convictions, now suffers a crisis of faith and purpose - does the ideal of "shared mission" _really_ merit your blood, sweat, and tears when the culmination of that mission was losing _another_ war in some faraway land?
I don't see people talking about it but notice when she said that that her eyes were going up and down over Mariner? Jennifer was definitely checking her out.
@@dragonrider1736 You got me to skip frame by frame through the first scene, and now I noticed that the background has twice the framerate than the characters. Very interesting, you'd never be able to tell at full speed.
@@anlumo1 the background is probably 3D/CGI (they probably have several ship corridors and interiors rendered , then its easier to just pick an angle and draw more detail to clean it ..its what Space battleship Yamato 2199 did for example) while the characters are 2D drawn.. so it makes sense as its harder to animate 2D that CGI
Much as I loved these two together, I don't think Mariner will be quick to forgive Jennifer for not believing her about the news report. Everyone on that ship needs to apologize to her, frankly.
Here's what Mike Mcmahan said In the third season, [Mariner] and Jennifer are seeing each other and there are stories we tell about that. What I would say is it’s not easy to date Mariner, and this show really is not about Mariner’s romantic relationships. It’s about how she sees herself, and how she treats friends and colleagues more than romantic partners. So, it was important to me-from the point of view of Star Trek, having these people in your life and seeing where these stories go. Mariner’s sexuality to me has always been… she seems like the kind of character who can run into a villain and awkwardly Mariner had dated him or her before. Those are the kinds of stories I really get excited about. With Mariner, there’s these historical sort of things you see with her, so… you will see Mariner and Jennifer dating, and see how that affects her, but really the tectonic shift that’s going into [Mariner’s arc in season three] is, right when she opened herself up and everything was going great, it all gets taken away from her. How does that affect somebody who doesn’t like it when people leave her or are taken away?
Now I'm imagining something like this. Villain: "Tremble before the might of-" Freeman: "You again?" Ransom: "You've met them?" Freeman: "Yeah, Mariner brought them home for dinner once. Apparently she has an 'I can make them even worse' fetish." Villain: "Wait, THAT'S what she was doing?"
there's another scene before all of this. in ep2, everyone is laughing hard about Boimler's Ferengi story but Jennifer mostly just smirks and doesn't completely buy it. she then smiles at Mariner as she's leaving.
Makes me wonder how long they were planning this for. Edit: Actually, watching the scene in question, she is laughing with everyone else, and looks like she's smirking as Mariner leaves. Maybe they weren't planning *that* far ahead.
@@axelalonsogarcia5382 I mean, Mariner was confirmed pan in the girl's trip episode, and Jennifer was pretty flirty in that last scene so the ship is pretty obvious.
This would be an excellent pairing. Since Tendi and Rutherford are definitely going to be an item, Boimler and Mariner need love interests outside the core group. Having all 4 of them pairing off with each other would be cliche and boring...
Well, they might pull a twist and not have Tendi and Rutherford be a couple. But if Mariner is going to have a love interest outside the core group I would be hoping it would be T'Lyn.
@@HaydrogenBomb I could see them going that way, if they wanted to keep them BFs. But then again I thought they would pair Mariner with T'Lyn so what do I know.
I agree. It’s actually pretty rare to see the two central protagonists of a show not get together if their male and female. This would make for a refreshing change of pace.
I love the irony of how earlier Treks (TOS & ENT) kinda established Andorians as the badass warriors of the Federation (at least as compared to say, Humans), but here Beckett seems more "Andorian-like" than Jennifer. Also----has anyone else noticed Jennifer's space suit helmet has antennae knobs?? LOL
It's the Cerritos. We have an Orion medic, a Bajoran heavy, Housecat M.D. - And the two most competent people on the ship are _humans._ _Nobody_ on that boat is using their natural advantages. A reserved Andorian is the least weird.
The helmet thing is a sweet detail, but also in keeping with the Star Trek canon. The Andorians lose their balance, if something happens to their antennae.
According to an interview with Mike McMahan, Mariner and Jennifer *are* gonna be in a relationship in S3, with all the trials and tribulations that brings. I'm curious if this'll be a long term thing - where Mariner needs to learn to let people in - or if it'll only last for the season before they break up. Only time will tell - I'm excited though!
Some of their interactions make me think they've got a "we broke up but I'm still into you" vibe. I'd enjoy a twist of the third season including a look at them having a past relationship that didn't quite work out, maybe contrasted by a second try now that Mariner's grown and faced her issues. But I am a little sad that we're losing that relatable "random coworker you just don't like" for more of a relationship tone.
@@BlueSmoke216 eh, I could take it or leave it. I think it's much more interesting to see how Mariner has changed and grown over time, and how her relationships have changed with her
After the last two episodes of Season 3, Mariner has basically ignored Jennifer's entire existence for the entirety of Season 4. And it's kinda hard to blame her for that.
Note of course that during I, Excretus, the *one* part of the simulation Mariner expresses genuine interest in is the part where Jennifer's nude and clearly shown to be into women.
@@Pentarax ~ As *[@Moonlite Brite]* pointed out, it has been _'Alpha'_ Canon confirmed (by the ST:LD writers, by Tawny Newsome, and on-screen) that Mariner is pan-sexual; not just "bi-", given the very diverse nature of the ST-'verse ([Mariner]: _"Oh I'm _*_always_*_ dating Bad Boys...Bad Girls, Bad gender non-binary babes, ruthless alien masterminds, Bad Bynars...")._ As for the 'Naked Now' holo-scenario (0:40), also take into account that Mariner has stated (twice) that Mariner thinks Barnes is "crazy hot", so that was another allure/temptation for Mariner (in addition to Jennifer).
@@Alkonium ~ Broadly speaking for/in Reality, I do not disagree with you. *;)* But as a friendly (ST-based) counter-point, _'bi-sexual'_ exclusion would be applicable since the ST-'verse does contain racially-physical non-binary genders, androgynous, and asexual races/species; rather than semantic &/or self-identifying non-binary. So _'pan-sexual'_ would be more appropriate and accurate through the ST-lens. Or, to draw upon the Doctor Who character of Captain Jack Harness (John Barrowman), Mariner may be _'omni'-sexual'._ *;)*
Honestly same. I'd love a few episodes in s3 where one or two of the Core 4 are busy elsewhere and so one of the supporting characters like Jennifer or Barnes gets swapped in. Just something small to shake it up, yknow?
@@ZekromAndYugiAndDrago123 I wouldn’t be surprised if we did tbh. Introducing new supporting characters that are well received is always gold for shows as far as the writers might be concerned. More options for stories to be explored. …or this is just cope-ium lol
I'm surprised to see so many Mariner/Jennifer shippers, as opposed to Mariner/T'Lyn shippers. Considering that T'Lyn seems to have a lot in common with Mariner while we still know very little about Jennifer other than she saved Mariner's life.
@@mikemorro140 I think Mariner/Jennifer started out as a running gag. But now they seem to have decided to go with "two girls who hate each other secretly want to hook up" angle.
Starfleet is supposed to be accommodating for all species in the Federation, so Andorian-specific gear for Andorians is not out of the question. Cetatian ops plus other cetatian accommodations is another example.
Apparently they're dating now. I hope they don't screw it up; Beckett needs more stable, supportive, and positive relationships (including romantic). Like her parents come across as maybe meaning well, but being the kind of parents who continually demand their child get straight As and master the violin. Which explains a lot of Mariner's behavior when you think about it.
A Boilmer and Mariner relationship remains my absolute favorite. But it will definitely be very interesting to see what happens next with the Mariner and Jennifer. It doesn't matter what happens to the two of them.
I think Boimler and Mariner will get together in the end, but they will have lots of other relationships along the way. I'm hoping that Boimler and T'Lyn will have a relationship in Season 4. That should be interesting as Boimler is the human who is structured and logical and T'Lyn is the vulcan who is spontaneous and instinct-driven.
@@joeschembrie9450 It would be great if the two really ended up becoming a couple. The makers have ruled that out so far. Of course it could just be a trick. We'll see how the two of them continue.
Hear that supposedly Beckett is gonna end up a pairing with Jennifer which I think would honestly be quite a fun idea. Normally with four-character ensembles they get evenly paired up male-to-female so it'd be a fun twist if it goes a different way here.
Fun fact: In Beta Cannon, Andorians have 4 genders, Two masculine genders, Chan and Thaan (Shran was a Thaan) And 2 feminine genders, Zhen and Shen, I wonder if Jen is a Shen or a Zhen?
Beta canon also has gender prefixes attached to surnames, so Jennifer's surname of "sh'Reyan" (as listed in a background shot in 208) suggests she's a shen.
did they ever get into specifics about what the differences were exactly? because I can recall a few species in fiction having multiple sexes like that but I can't recall if they ever really went into detail about how they differentiated. Alien Nation was probably the closest that did.
@@Igarappappa shen provides the egg that gets fertilized by one of the male sexes (either "one or the other" or "one of them specifically", wiki is vague, but says you need all four for reproduction) and transferred to the zhen, who brings it to term.
So apparently Mariner Fantasizes about Jen as revealed in the most recent Lower Decks Episode. So you think they might actually get together by the end of Season 3? I’d Ship it, or Cerritos it! B3
by all Measure Laurin did a very good job with her Voice work, I am very glad I can pick out most of the people by there voice, its fun knowing who has worked on the show !!
If that happens it would be hard to tell who she jealous of, is she jealous of Jennifer being with Boimler or is she jealous of Boimler being with Jennifer. Maybe Mariner is openly in love with Jennifer but has a hidden longing/soft spot for Boimler.
@@deathking1019 I highly doubt that would happen. Marvel are sort of doing it with Cyclops/Wolverine/Jean Grey with mixed feedback. So I don't think we're there quite yet.
One thing that I never thought lower decks would do is make the manual flight stick thing from Insurrection make sense with it being on starfleet ships
Pretty impressive that they had enough spacesuits for everyone, perhaps they had the replicators on overdrive or they packed the shuttlecrafts and escape pods, maybe certain areas such as the mess hall and the medical bay are hermetically sealed with their own life support systems (would help against the spread of diseases with the med bay and the spread of odours of certain styles of cooking with the mess hall).
There's loads of examples in other Star Trek series of them sealing off chunks of the ship with forcefields, including doorways, and in at least some circumstances specifically to close hull breaches
I wonder in the upcoming Star Trek Lower Deck if Jennifer will make amend with Mariner since she's the one who broke up their relationship after the misunderstanding during Mariner's unauthorized interview with Victoria Nuzé because at the end of the Season 3 finale she didn't come to Mariner and apologizes unless Jennifer is very a shame of herself while feeling guilty for wrongly accuse Mariner for something that she didn't do.
I was hoping that Mariner and Boimler would end up together, but I'm really starting to like Jennifer. It might be interesting to see her and Marinner together. Truth be told, I still hope for her and Boimler to become an item, but I can get behind Marinner and Jennifer. Heck, maybe they could use the Marinner, Jennifer relationship to emphasise romantic tensions between Marinner and Boimler, perhaps with him being jealous of how much time Marinner spends with Jennifer
I'm rooting for Mariner and Boimler, too, but I love organic relationships. Unanticipated ships that just work are awesome, and if the series ends with Mariner/Jennifer, and it clicks, I'll be just as happy with it.
The series subtly showed us that Sh' Reyan was after Mariner. The excuses to talk to her or like when Boimler left, Jennifer slept very close so close to Mariner, as if to bother when Mariner texted Boimler. Jenifer probably tried to move into Boimler bed, before they used it as a cellar for their knickknacks.
I'm embarrassed that I didn't recognize Lauren Lapkus' voice immediately. Also continuing the weird trend of her getting cast as non-funny roles, despite being hilarious irl.
She has become a fan favourite character, I like her character and where her and Mariners friendships goes will be interesting, BUT I think many feel she should be in a relationship with Mariner. I would like it if T'Lyn come over and becomes a love interest for Boimler.
Boimler and T'Lyn would be an interesting couple, but that's a bit too much like Trip and T'Pol from 'Enterprise.' That being the case, the writers may say "been there, done that" and go in another direction.
@@thomashill6347 You know, I never really thought of that! Rutherford's part machine, Vulcans aspire to be machines, so that would actually make sense.
@@ShaolinShadowStroke Well I was thinking that T'Lyn is in science and Technology so that would be something she would like and Rutherford is a Engineer and Technology is his thing.
I think Boimler/T'Lyn would be fun. She is a loose cannon by Vulcan standards, but her attitude is pretty stoic for a human. It would be funny if she thought that Boimler was a loose cannon like her after he does something that is mildly against the standard procedure.
Sorry that Beckett and Jennifer train wrecked like they did. Jen should have at least had an open mind about what Beckett was capable of. Hopefully they will at least get back on speaking terms.
@@StarkSpider24 Tell you what, just for you I'm gonna let you in on the secret. There were a series of Star Trek novels that came out in 90s established the Andorians have 4 genders (2 masculine, 2 feminine). To help differentiate them, Andorians would add a prefix to their family name depending on which gender they were. "sh" is one of the feminine genders.
it would be on brand for lower decks to boldly go where no star trek show has gone before, but at least for this combination i would hope no, simply because i don't want Boimler and Mariner to end up together, even if it's in a thruple. It's just such a cliche, we'll likely gonna get Tendi/Rutherford, so i hope Boimler and Mariner both find someone outside their original friends group.
when people try to force a shipping war and not realizing andorian families have two daddies and two mommies. dubious canon sure (mentioned in one novel and nowhere else) but LD is legends of tommorow/sonic boom (the cartoon)-tier crazy enough to do it.
It comes up in a mission in star trek online, an Andorian during the discovery era brings up having a husband and wives back on Andoria. Another only seems to have only a wife but given that was in the “present” for STO and on a colony outside Andorian space so he might not follow his people’s customs as closely as others of his species or the custom declined over time.
@@darman12able On the inconsistency, maybe while Polyamory is normal amongst Andorians, some are inclined to by Monogamous. Monogamy for Andorians may be a minority sexuality, just as polygamy is amongst humans
0:55-1:00 This is the funniest thing to me. You just barely see her realize "oh hey that's not a normal 'I don't like you' thing" before the video cuts away (and I think the original episode distracts from it another way?)
Good point. As an aside, I've always wondered the same about the Klingon General Chang in "The Undiscovered Country." "Chang" is an Earth Human name. Was it ever established if he had a human ancestor?
In story: maybe her actual name sounds like "Jennifer" and she decided to keep it that way. Out story: because Mariner's VA was improvising and the name stuck.
