Becky Switzer was selected to receive a Door-Opener Award
In recognition of the many doors she has opened for young women through her leadership as coach of the award-winning University of Oklahoma Women's Gymnastics program for 18 years, coach of the U.S. World Cup team in Beijing and as a member of the coaching staff of the World Championships in Rotterdam, Netherlands and Pan American Games in Indianapolis, and through her volunteer civic activities working with many Oklahoma nonprofits and Oklahoma government agencies in Oklahoma, and the business acumen she has shown through operating her own talent agency that represents some of the most recognizable sports and celebrity figures in America.
Becky is an organization founder-builder. She was a college gymnast at Centenary College in Louisiana, finished her degree at Oklahoma City University, and landed at the University of Oklahoma as an assistant gymnastics coach in 1981, the same year the women's gymnastics program was founded.
By 1984 she was named head coach, where she helped her athletes develop into all-star performers. Her leadership led her teams to five Big Eight championships including a perfect season in 1985. In just her second season as head coach, she led her team to its first NCAA Championship appearance. One of her athletes, Kelly Garrison, won a coveted spot on the U.S. Olympic team, the only collegian to qualify. While at OU, she led teams to six conference titles, had two national champion athletes, received two Honda Awards and secured five conference championships. She was named Big Eight Coach of the Year in 1991 and Big 12 Co-head Coach of the Year in 2001.
During her career, Becky also opened doors when she taught at Casady High School and as a founder of Metro Gymnastics.
Just a few of the organizations in recent years that Becky has provided leadership to include Oklahoma Heritage Association, Alzheimer's Association, Harold Hamm Diabetes Center at OU, Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation, ASTEC Charter Schools, Oklahoma Tourism and Recreation Commission, City Care Inc., Jasmine Moran Children's Museum and Allied Arts. She is also a founding member and current board member of FYI (For Youth Initiatives), and as a member of Leadership Oklahoma, serves on its advisory board. She is also a three-time honoree of The Journal Record's "Fifty Making a Difference" and a 2011 inductee into the program's "Circle of Excellence."
Recently, she and husband, Barry, were named Oklahoma Living Treasures by Oklahoma Health Center Foundation.
