Hi Omprakash, If you are interested in becoming a donor, contact The National Marrow Donor Program® (NMDP), a federally funded nonprofit organization that maintains an international registry of volunteers willing to be donors at www.marrow.org. Your doctor may also have helpful suggestions. Take care.

They put the needle in her stomach?
@billyboberto
@billyboberto 4 года назад
Hi cynthia - no the needle is inserted along the broad side of the hip into the pelvis. For women, this is more likely to be towards the buttock or groin side, depending on the plate shape. for men, it's usually inserted on the direct lateral hip. women tend to experience more discomfort as it goes through more muscle mass to reach the pelvis, but swelling lasts about 1-2 months or less.

What are the side effect and long time effects after donating.
@NCIgov

Hello, A process called apheresis or leukapheresis is used to obtain peripheral blood stem cells (PBSCs) for transplantation. During apheresis, the person may feel lightheadedness, chills, numbness around the lips, and cramping in the hands. The medication that is given to stimulate the mobilization (release) of stem cells from the marrow into the bloodstream may cause bone and muscle aches, headaches, fatigue, nausea, vomiting, and/or difficulty sleeping. These side effects generally stop within 2 to 3 days of the last dose of the medication. For more information about PBSCs see www.cancer.gov/about-cancer/treatment/types/stem-cell-transplant/stem-cell-fact-sheet?cid=YTncigov. Take care.

I'm from Brazil and I'm a donor registered there. But I'm having trouble to understand how to be a donor in US. I understood that there are many facilities (or companies) that I can do my registration and they can see the data from each other in order to find a possible match. Am I correct? Is registration for free or it will cost something depends on the company that I choose? I will do whatever it takes, but I didn't understand and I want to engage some friends to do the same.

Hi Drica, It may be helpful to know that those interested in donating should talk to a doctor for guidance. The following resource provides some guidance www.cancer.net/blog/2017-01/donating-bone-marrow-easy-and-important-heres-why. You may also want to contact Be The Match®, the largest and most diverse bone marrow registry in the world at 763-406-8140 for calls from outside the US. Take care.

I would love to do this but the first time I donated plasma I became sweaty and felt like I was going to puke. I was so embarrassed as I was excited to be donating and now had to be taken off the machine early. They said I was good to come back but I'm worried I'll get light headed again.

Hi Klue, Thank you for donating plasma. We are sorry to hear that it was a difficult experience. If you wish to donate again you may wish to follow-up with that healthcare team about any precautions you might take. Take care.

Donor stem cells can be collected in two ways, peripheral blood stem cell (PBSC) collection and bone marrow harvest. In this video, the donor is given 5 days of shots to help stem cells move from the bone marrow into the blood and during the collection. Most often, during PBSC blood is removed from the donor through a line in a vein (IV) in the arm, although because this person’s veins were small, a large vein in their leg was used. In the other type of procedure called a bone marrow harvest, anesthesia is used during the procedure. After the procedure, the area where the bone marrow was taken out (usually the hip bone) may feel stiff or sore for a few days, and the donor may feel tired for a little while. More on bone marrow donation here: www.cancer.gov/about-cancer/treatment/types/stem-cell-transplant/stem-cell-fact-sheet?cid=YTncigov and here: medlineplus.gov/ency/patientinstructions/000839.htm.

Does the donor have to foot the bill for the doctors appointments and hospital stay?
@NCIgov

Hi Noey, In the United States the National Marrow Donor Program coordinates bone marrow and stem cell donations through the Be The Match Registry. Be The Match covers every cost related to donation. You can learn more about becoming a donor at bloodcell.transplant.hrsa.gov/donor/donating/index.html. Additional information about Be The Match can be found on their website at bethematch.org/. What tests are required in Radiology?
@NCIgov
@NCIgov 5 лет назад
Hi Ruki, Thank you for your question. It’s unclear exactly what type of information you are looking for. Radiology is the use of radiation or other imaging technologies to diagnose or treat disease. You may wish to contact us with more detail and we will do our best to help: www.cancer.gov/contact. Take care.

Is there any side effects to the donation? Like feeling different or weaker.
@NCIgov
@NCIgov 5 лет назад
Hi Turbo Kid, With any medical procedure there is a risk of side effects however there are very few risks for the donor during this procedure. The most common side effects are nausea, headache, fatigue (feeling tired), and bruising or discomfort in the lower back. You can read more about donating blood marrow here: medlineplus.gov/ency/patientinstructions/000839.htm Take care.
