Honestly mate, nobody, literally nobody knows what they’re really doing. We never know what’s round the corner so I’d just say take each day as it comes and as a blessing. Keep being yourself and respecting others. Things will come to you, whenever it’s right. Love the videos and all the best mate 👍🏼

Hi Will, started following your journey just before you bought your van. I have been suffering with my mental health on and off for years. I’m 20 years older than you and like you I worry about where I’m going to be in 10 years. I was a designer for 17 years, took redundancy and after that decided to change my life. Spent 8 years in food manufacturing and once again I’m at at cross roads again. However, your videos have helped me, yes I would love a van and do what you do, I can afford it, it’ll never happen but what you do every week is give me escapism. Your a great guy, your van is great, you are great, stay strong and travel showing us wannabes, your adventures so we can keep our dreams alive through you. Take it easy brother.

Well done for learning and also being willing to learn, the more you know the better. At 74 I am still learning things and still not too proud to ask!. My wife and I laid a 120 foot block paving drive in our 60’s after looking up the best sites on RU-vid and asking questions including some silly ones because I had doubts, it all worked out well and is still flat and level - so go for it!

Judging by the look of that oil, this was well needed. Good on you Will! Just a tip for hard to crack bolts like oil drain plug, get yourself a extention bar for the socket, or even use a longer socket that the one youve got. The bar gives it more torque and allows you to crack it with much less effort. I've learnt all the car stuuf the same way as you and trust me it get easier!!

Hi, I am 61, have had a driving license since 1977 for Motor Cycles, Cars & Light Commercial Vehicles. Back prior to the 80s drivers(usually men......sorry ladies) had to have some mechanical skill as pay was not high so we had to do it one's self so let me say, I am delighted to see you (unlike many your age) learning useful skills, well done young man! If I can be so bold as to pick up on your concerns about life & the future, during my short but colourful life, I have always kept in mind that we are only here for the ride. There will be good times, bad times & boring times & all I would say is, fill your life with things that you want to try no matter what it is & you will not get to the end of your life saying 'Oh I wish I'd have tried that' The world is a wonderful place, full of interesting people & don't feel under pressure to have anyone else in your life unless you want that. Travel will make you a more rounded person, be well young man, I salute you!

hello Will, good job on your first service. two tips for you, if you run the engine for 10/15 mins to get the oil warm, just warm not hot, it comes out easyer. After fitting the sump plug/oil filter wipe around the plug/filter. makes it easyer to see if theres a leak
@stevemcmosh4271
@stevemcmosh4271 2 года назад
Good stuff! Well done. Two small tips for the oil change..... 1) Put a little fresh oil into your new filter to prime it. 2) When pouring fluids from those big bottles, rest the bottle with its widest side horizontally rather than it's norrowest side. OR if you know you're using the whole bottle pierce a hole in the top for the air to escape. It will glug much less erratically and give a smoother pour - less chance of wanking it all over the engine.

@CrustyBiker 2 года назад
Well done on the first service mate, another think you could do is check or change the cabin filter that filters the air you recieve in the cabin, it's usually accessed in the back of the glovebox but I don't know with a van? It's normal to be on a bit of a low when you've just been on a fun adventure where you put all of lifes problems on hold an go and enjoy life and forget your troubles for a while, like people say below, not everyone knows where they are going in life and all your friends may be settled and in high jobs before you and seem like they've achieved life, but truth is, they probably have more stress and worry than you without those things, don't stress on it, as long as you have your health and a roof over your head, you're in a better place than some unfortunate people delt poor hands in the game of life, you're doing alright, you've got a brilliant platform to air your achievements, adventures, lessons and worries... keep doing what you're doing... ps that oil looked black as anything, must've really needed that change badly lol

We all feel and understand where your coming from. The meaning of life I hope is to be happy, make others happy and leave the world better than when you entered it. But, the daily grind can distract you from what’s important. The pressures of expectation. Only thing you can do is to set milestones to aim for, a sense of purpose, discover and understand why you want to do what you do. Having this false goals can be fulfilling, but is junk food for the soul. Live a little and be experimental. Love watching what you get up to, and you inspire me to do more with the time I have .

I was wondering what the disaster was going to be in this one, but I was wrong - you got through it with no mishaps! When you get rusty screws, like those in the air filter box, it helps if you rub a bit of oil or grease on them to slow down the rusting. You can then get them out easily next time. If you find wood screws are difficult to do up, rub a bit of candle wax on them. If a small wood screw no longer screws up tight, put some superglue in the hole, (not too much, you only want it round the wall of the hole) and let it dry before putting the screw back in.

As others have said, an extension of some sort on your socket wrench is a must to keep in the van at all times. I have a 1 meter length of thick steel tubing that always goes with me. If you get a puncture and have to do a wheel change it is hugely useful for getting off the nuts on your wheel. Garages usually put your wheels on using a compressed air gun which can mean they are on so tightly you need to be built like Arnold Shwarzenegger to get them off for a wheel change. A long steel tube gives you so much torque they come off easily. I had occasion to help someone with a flat tyre who was stuck on the side of a busy road trying to change his wheel but defeated by the wheel nuts.

Well done! It is good idea to run the engine a bit just before draining the oil, the warm oil drains better but more importantly running the engine stirs up the stuff that settles in the engine so that it can also be drained. You should also replace the fuel filter! The container you were not sure about holds the brake fluid. You should also check the power steering hydraulic fluid level.

Well done mate not bad for your first ever service couple points for next time remove oil filler cap before draining and then put back on (don’t drop anything inside) it releases some of the pressure in engine so doesn’t shoot out as fast at bottom end Once topped up and started van always check oil level again as it will drop slightly once filter is refilled etc yellow cap is brake fluid Going on condition of your old oil a fuel filter would be advisable just so you know it’s been done When filling the oil in future turn the bottle flat or you could even put hole in the top near handle so it doesn’t glug so fast Other than that good job
@Basman59

Right Will, two tips, ALWAYS flush the oil before refilling it. Two, use a lever extender to greater torque you can find them anywhere, and it gives you far greater leverage with tight nuts. An extra foot and with the same force (your strength) it would have come off in no time - actually less effort is needed.

Fuel Filter! Everyone seems to forget the fuel filter!. Anyway... If you're going to continue self servicing, get your self to somewhere like Costco and buy you oil in bulk, 25litres drums etc. Works out way cheaper than per 5litre cans. And a tip from an old timer I was given.... Diesels love air... So, what I did with a diesel I used to own, chuck the paper filter and fit a performance panel filter - NOT one of those boy racer induction kits! Paper filters can be quite restrictive in giving a diesel what it wants. The performance filters can be washable too, so no need to keep buying that filter at every service. 👍

Well done, Will! It is easy after you have had the courage to do it the first time. Next spring you do the service in no time. 👍 If you check your Ducato owner’s manual, you can find a list of items that go to the different service programs at certain intervals. With the mileage you have, you should check that the timing belt has been changed. It that breaks you will experience ”Camper Vibe in Spain” type of problems. It also makes sense to change the water pump at the same time.

If it's a petrol engine, check the spark plugs to make sure the gaps are correct for the vehicle and they aren't full of carbon or burnt white. Check the plug wires, if there's obvious deformities, cuts, separation of sheathing etc then replace them. Check the brake fluid make sure its filled to the full line and is clear-ish. If its brown or worse yet black then drain and replace it. Change the engine oil and filter. Change the fuel filter every 30000 to 45000 miles, especially if you drive on dirt a lot. Check the transmission fluid, especially if the transmission is whining, grinding or slipping gears. If the fluid isn't clear or pink & especially if its brown, then drain and replace. If the transmission is slipping / grinding that's bad and will probably cost a lot of money. Check the brake pads and rotors / drums as well as the tyres. If you are going to spend any appreciable amount of time somewhere cold or dusty then check all of the suspension bushings and joints, steering joints, sway bars, and U-joints. if they have grease fittings then lube them using a grease gun. You can find these fittings listed in your vehicle’s owner’s manual under the list of scheduled maintenance items. Check the battery with an ammeter. If its a diesel the only difference is you don't have spark plugs, you have glow plugs. If the glow plugs are blackened or deformed in any way then replace them, if the car is slow to start then replace them. Everything else is the same. If I had to give any advice for stuff to keep in the van for any minor emergency repairs it would be zip ties, bailing wire, a small assortment of nuts bolts and screws, a small tool kit ( 10mm is probably the most common size ) some duct tape, contact cement, plumbers putty ( great for plugging small water leaks ) and some electrical wire and wire nuts. That bit of kit will solve 80% of the small issues that will arise while you are traveling. P.S. Its all sealed because its poison and Children exist.

Make sure you check oil level after you run it, and keep an eye on it .... you'll get to know after a while how much oil it uses and how often you need to top it. Also, if you turn the oil container to the side it comes out less eratic.... clean oil on filter to seal is better 👍 amazing effort and achievement though.

You need a torque wrench to get the sump plug at the correct torque. Also its good practice to get an oil filter wrench to tighten up the filter a 1/4 turn from hand tight. You also need to prime the oil filter when putting it on, you should try & fill it as much as possible with new oil before it spills out when screwed on. The reason for that is it stops the oil pump encountering a gap in oil circulation on the first start after the oil change. I usually chase out the old oil with a dash of new oil & let it drain out, there is plenty available from 7 litres you can easily use 0.4 L for that purpose. Not sure about rubbing one filter on another, in fact thats total nonsence 😮 every good mechanic will tell you just to smear a drop of new oil on the rubber ring. The oil filter housing area should have been carefully cleaned up as well before putting the new filter on, even kitchen towel will do for that 😊

Well done Will, I really appreciate your honesty, that is life right Mate!? I may suggest creating a log book of all of the service. This helps to remind you of ongoing service intervals. Keep up the great videos and get going, you'll feel so great once you get the van building going aging! Cheers!

You did everything correctly. Next time use new oil on the new oil filter rubber gasket. Just put your finger in one of the bottles to get some new oil out then put it on the new one. You should have disk brakes on all wheels. Disk brakes are really easy to replace. If you need info on how to do that I can send it to you via your Instagram page. By doing it yourself you saved a bunch of money.

That oil didn't come from Eurocarparts. It came from Motex. And don't do up the sump.plug until you've changed the oil filter!

Any content you put out is good content Will! It might be something basic but having followed you since the little ford galaxy days it’s like following a mate (even tho i don’t actually know you) and seeing how far you’ve come makes me so happy. If you need time off then take time off to have some time to yourself, we’ll still be here when you do return. Have fun and just relax, don’t be so harsh on yourself and don’t worry about what you’re putting out (easier said than done I know!). But we’re here for you and I’ve loved your videos especially the Austrian tour. Enjoy some time off if you need it. Stay safe!

Good video again Will, you are keeping it real in your video's. Thing's don't always go the way you want. To me today's video was an easy job, but when I left school I went into the motor trade. When you were doing the woodwork I would of been stuffed doing that. Keep going, you are doing a good job.

Hey will I’m 40 and spent my childhood stripping things down and repairing them. At 17 I stripped down my motorbike engine and rebuilt. I didn’t have a clue what I was doing but I learned a lot by doing it. Totally agree with you get stuck in to learn.

Thanks for sharing your concerns about your future. It's really refreshing to hear. I'd be interested in seeing a vid where you discuss this more. What career options you're considering, what your concerns are, how you're thinking about changing things up. I love your realistic take on things rather than the fantasy youtube version of stuff.

Your van is diesel, you may well have a fuel filter to change/clean, also you should be checking the condition of your wiper blades and that your window wash is hitting the screen properly and not missing it (should hit around the centre of your vision)

Good job Will. A few helpful tips. To get stubborn bolts off there are several things you can do to make it easier. Use a breaker bar or a piece of pipe that will fit over your ratchet. For oil plugs I just snap them with a hit with a heavy hammer. Check your owners manual for the amount of oil it takes to refill with a new filter. I put that number on the cap with whiteout paint for future reference. Also put the date on the filter for future reference also....oh and don’t buy a fiat, having to use a funnel to fill up your windshield washer fluid is B.S

the dot 4 liquid container is the brakes oil! In a combustion engine we have to check: engine oil, direction fluid, brake fluid, transmission fluid, change oil and air filters and habitacle filter. Check your manual of the van, there will be a to do list at every year or km

In response to not knowing where you're going, I have an idea. You seem quite good at editing videos. That could be something you could pursue. You could be out on the road and still do some work editing videos for people etc.

It's OK to not have everything figured out at your age. When I was in my 20s I was in a dead end job for not much over minimum wage and had an undiagnosed mental illness and felt like a failure. Now I am 44 and in a better place inside my head but still facing a major crossroads and uncertainty.

Life does have a habit of showing you the way, enjoy the freedom you have and get some great adventures under your belt. There is plenty of time to be a grown up later.

Coolant - get a test kit to make sure it's not too diluted. Modern stuff lasts for 10+ years - top up with coolant mix of correct type. Max is the 'hot' level, so normally you top up to the cold or min setting. If it's cloudy or messy, drain, flush and replace.

If you find it burns oil, worth getting 10L bottle of oil - always cheaper in bulk, and decant a litre into your small bottle to take on a trip...avoid motorway oil prices. I'd be changing every 10k miles. I use a fuel cleaner 1000 miles before MoT - check reviews to avoid wasting money on them. Gloves and oil absorbing mat are very useful, and lots of cloths/rags/blue paper roll. Local tip should take waste oil. Normally low-high on dipstick is 1 litre.

If you pour with the bottle opening on top, the air flows freely back into bottle -> no "blub blub blub" and oil going everywhere, just a steady flow. Also, get a cheap torque wrench - it will be helpful in avoiding overtightening the wheel nuts and damaging your rims (can't recall if you have one already), and it also helps in teaching yourself what different torques feel like. Looked like you tightened that drain plug very tight; apparently it should be only 22Nm in Ducato - verify that from the service manual. Overtightening can damage the threads, crack castings (which is EXPENSIVE damage) and will be a b*tch to open next time. Great to see you putting effort in getting the important things done, serviced *anything* will serve you better and give more enjoyment than neglected one!
