I was in the Civil Air Patrol and one of the best motivating factors for me was, everytime you ranked up you got to go on an airplane ride {cessna 172} at the time, so if your a kid that likes aircraft and flying it's a good way to go.

As a retired Navy pilot, flew C-2A's and T-45C's for most of my 3000 hours, this is all good info. I will say the needs of the Navy rules the day. I did very well in primary and got E2/C2...which still requires a 50 NSS and to the right but got drafted into it. Happens with every platform. Regardless which platform, you will like what you fly.

This man speaks truth! I speak by personal experience. I had a heart surgery years ago and needed a waiver for my flying job. Process took months. It was tough. And at times very i felt very impatient. But I was able to get it. Faith was my key! Never give up on ur dreams! Give ur 100% always, that way when you look back you can't regret anything! Been watching his videos for a looong time, even before i enlisted in the world's greatest airforce! Aim High!!! 🇺🇸👍 #MTTYN

While it is important to know some things, it is not required to have a PPL to get a slot. PCSM 90 and above helps (although academy guys have much lower PCSM), technical degree helps , GPA 3.0 and above helps, whole person concept REALLY helps. You look at an applicant and after 30 minutes wonder if you could tolerate the guy sitting next to you for a long haul to FJDG. There are a lot of "cadets" who join CAP, get intro flights, solo, gliders and if you progress up to a Cadet/Captain or higher, you get credits for ROTC. Several cadets have come from the Civil Air Patrol; not just for the flying but you are taught leadership, customs and courtesies, various emergency services skills and you go to encampments (basic training). Great program to start with. Your doubt will self eliminate you. If you have some hiccups, assess, improve and redo and show that you can do it, ask questions, show motivation. Don't be afraid to ask the IPs or the ACs. Like Mover said. Do EXACTLY what you are asked. The bare minimum at best. You need to show that you can follow simple instructions; this is where it starts.

A long time ago when I was in HS my Dad took me to Career Day. The Navy recruiter asked me why I was there and I told him I wanted to fly the F-4. After reviewing my transcripts he told me “Son, your eyesight isn’t good enough to fly and your grades aren’t high enough to navigate.” That lit a bonfire under me. Long story short I enjoyed a long and lucrative career in the Corporate world. Make them tell you “no.” It’s not the end of the world and just might be the best damned advice you ever could’ve received, regardless of the path in life you ultimately ended on.

Mover, your videos are excellent and much appreciated. I've shared quite a few. I'm a former intel puke, served with the 612th TFS (F-16's), devoured a fam flight in the back seat of an F-16D, a highlight of my life. I really appreciate your encouragement for aspiring pilots, particularly the "make them tell you no" philosophy. When I was in (discharged in 1992), we had female pilots in the USAF, but not in combat aircraft. They had just changed the rules to allow that. You could say that our squadron had a "good ol' boy" feel about it, as if women would disrupt things. Our commander (one of the most impressive persons I've ever met) put an end to that, saying that he's flown with many female pilots, and if they passed the training, he would fly with them anytime. And that maybe they just worry they'd have to work harder to compete. I didn't get to see women fly fighters, but I'm curious how that all panned out. Are women now accepted as equals in fighter units? Would you recommend it to, say, your niece?

I don’t know if this will be seen or not but it dosent matter to me. I have in the last 10 years been encapsulated with anything military. Im not someone that is particular to one branch or the other. I didn’t like history in High School, but as I have gotten older (38 to be exact) I have had a fascination with the military. Wish i had this kind of excitement for the military at a younger age. Love to watch any military videos and luckily came across your channel here on RU-vid. I have really enjoyed the info in every video. I have recently bought the Spectre series on Ebook and have just started reading it. I found the ADHD question interesting. It's been awhile, but I think most fighter pilots (me included) would have been diagnosed with ADHD if that was a thing in those days. In fact, the general personality types run the gamut, but tend to favor those with at least hyper activity. The attention deficit part may also be a benefit especially in busy air-to-air environment. To me, attention deficit is a social construct ascribed to people who are just super aware of and reacting to everything that's going on around them. In a dogfight that's a pretty good idea! If you've ever sat in a single-seat fighter you'll see that it can get pretty busy and having an heightened awareness of what's going on with your jet as well as outside your cockpit is a huge advantage for those of us with what society has labeled a "problem."

Back in the late 90''s I'd kind of reached a peak working in the financial markets as a senior account exec and wanted a change of career. As I have always loved aviation and aeronautics as an interest and hobby.I decided to approach the R.A.A.F. (now all military, here in Australia, is combined called A.D.F.) As I was approaching 30, the chances were pretty slim at becoming a pilot. I went to 3 interviews and they suggested becoming a signals officer (my grandfather worked in that field during WWII as acting wing commander and my father was an aircraft engine engineer during WWII)They were kind of pushing me into that direction but I wanted to fly. I eventually said thank you for your time and walked away and went back to the F.Mkts at another firm. Then a little later I received a call at my apartment, one weekend, from one of our FA 18 pilots (whom I'd met at a party in Albert Park Melbourne VIC, as they were renting an apartment in the same suburb I was residing in during the Australian F1 race) He was pretty honest with me, for which I totally understood, That at my age and the costs involved. I was pretty much too old for them to get financial cost return for service here in OZ. However he did suggest something interesting to me. He suggested I join the Navy and fly helicopters then later attempt to cross train to fixed wing aircraft in the R.A.A.F. or Navy (I was too old to become a fast jet pilot, yet I could still have the chance to become a fixed wing pilot. Me being ignorant and a little stubborn said thank you for the call in a polite manner and we ended the call. I truly regret not taking that path he suggested. My point here is if you are a bit older and want to fly for the military and get the relevant licenses. There are avenues to persue your goals. That call was a rare event as they don't usually make calls like that. The special thing about this regret is it would have meant two things to me. 1) I could have flown in the R.A.A.F. 2) It would have made 3 generations in the R.A.A.F. My popper was one of the first R.A.A.F. officers to join when he R.A.A.F. during it's inception (previously called, under Britton, The Australian Flying Corp. I am so happy i found your channel C.W. and am addicted to it for lack of another word. You are honest, concise and educational. Thank you for putting in all your efforts. It's fan - tastic and I've become one of your greatest fans :) Cheers mate and joining law enforcement must have been quite a transition althogh yor thinking and training would have helped. Again cheers and keep up the good work both on your channel and your current occupation.

Sir, I saw that. If they come back... I feel that, so many people are overwhelmed at the moment, and airlines alone host so many people's jobs. I know I'd love to fly in general, a fighter more than anything, but I'm happy with simgames for now. I'm praying for the best and thankful I'm in an essential(wait, a what now), low exposure position involving semi-truck tires. (ah, we're at this point, I care about minimal viral exposure now... I think we're all a little new to this level of viral pandemic. This is frighting at times... but we'll make it) Your videos always give me hope to fly, still, through all this stuff going on. I'm not losing hope and you better not either. We'll make it and air travel will remain in some capacity. It might not look the same in the long run but lets get there first. You never know what you might still fly. I'm 26, from Oklahoma, stressed out, and still some day, I want to be licensed to fly, and able to fly in something frequently, we'll see. I'm quite tired but it felt good to leave a rambling comment before bed. Have a good night all! Never lose hope. o/

Maybe I should have tried to make them tell me no back then. I wish I could save this v-blog for my boys, both are quite young but have the interest in aviation now. If that should persist, I'd love for them to hear this in high school. You're a positive influencer Mover, keep it up!

@theloopholeisntaahol 4 года назад
@@ezost5544 I'm not far where exactly you are as far as age of education right now but as far as making the cut, your best bet is simply not to fuck up. No DUI's, no drugs, no domestic violence. As long as you have decent grades, (a 3.0 GPA in college will be sufficient) and exercise enough for a good PFT score you can get selected for an Air slot while you're a freshman in college. The Marines is the only branch that is able to give out air slots to college freshman, you can apply directly to be a pilot. ROTC and Academy folks won't know until their 3rd of 4th year. For the ASTB I got a $20 study guide from Amazon that honestly caught me up with all the math lessons I forgot about. (I was a business major). My score was a 6/6/6/, pretty low but honestly the selection board doesn't care about your ASTB score, just that you passed. Just keep up your interests in aviation such as watching videos such as these and use it for motivation. And it'll be a lot easier than you think.

Should I discharge from DEP and start applying to units and would this type of DEP discharge hurt my chances? Question: Why are all weapons officers not given flight controls, HUD's, and landing training? How is ejecting an unconscious pilot and destroying a multi-million dollar airplane preferable to delivering them safely home? And if the weapons officer does not have controls or training, are they at least able to program an auto-pilot to get them back to friendly territory before ejecting?

After graduating with honors from university with a bachelor of science in 1986, the first thing I did was to head down to the navy recruiter to sign up to become a fighter pilot. My hopes were shot down when I found out that because I finished college at age 34 I was too old to qualify to become a fighter pilot. I was unaware of waivers. They did offer to make me an officer on a nuclear submarine, but my dream was to fly fighter aircraft, Wound up going to medical school instead. Now happily retired. My dad was a waist gunner in a B26 in WW2 and shot down behind German lines. He was a member of the Caterpillar Club. In retrospect I believe I would go for the Air National Guard.

For a Mover Mailbag: I don’t know how “in the know” you may be on this, but I’m still pretty curious for your thoughts: What do you think of the recently announced Block 70 Viper? I think the...I want to call them “shoulder pods” look a bit odd. But it sounds like it has a bunch of newer avionics that might be interesting. Any thoughts?

Hi Mover, love the channel, quick question: I know your a bit biased (I'm glad you are), but is there ANY country that has a plane in their arsenal that can match or is superior to U.S. fighter jets? I realize the pilots and tactics make all the difference, but talking strictly technically plane to plane. Thx for your service.

My refractive error for each eye is -8.00. Is that waiverable? This video and the waiver guide said “correctable to 2020.” Does this imply that I’m still good to go as long as I have contacts or lasik? I’ve looked into it and I honestly have no idea if a -8.00 is waiverable or not. Thanks.

Back in 2007, I went to a recruiting station and inquired about CWO as I expressed interest in becoming a UH-60 Blackhawk pilot. The recruiters said the Army was the only branch that allowed civilians to enter the military with a CWO career path. However, they both kept saying the selection process is discouragingly tough for civilians and recommended I enlist as an E-1. I kept telling them I already finished my Bachelor's degree and wanted to go in as an officer if CWO didn't work out (which they also discouraged). Their vibe felt like signing up an E-1 would mean higher commissions and/or bonuses for them. What are your thoughts on this type of recruiting Mover?

I'm a huge screw up and more importantly I'm transgender but I stopped taking hormones a while ago, largely in the hopes of getting to fly again someday. I did one semester of ROTC in college and then got kicked out but now I've finished my PhD in physics and I have ~200 hrs in a Cessna earlier in grad school. I'm hoping I have a chance but it feels like this will not be easy. Hopefully "I have a friggin physics PhD and a private pilots license already" will be a good enough argument soon.

Quick question. Do you think an ANG Unit would take into consideration the “standing” or “reputation” of the institution from which my college degree is from. For example, would an applicant with a degree from Stanford appeal more to a unit than an applicant from a community college (obviously exaggerated), or is it solely GPA?
@erikhenry689
@erikhenry689 4 года назад
I can’t speak for any other units but from what I’ve seen from mine and what I’ve heard from friends in other units is it depends. It seems like most units are not going to just zero in on your resume or one piece of it. The big thing to remember about interviewing with Guard/Reserve units is they’re looking to build a long term relationship with you. So you might interview against someone from a “better” school but if they don’t fit in with the people in the unit and you do, you’ve got a better chance of getting hired. Also, make sure that the unit you’re interviewing with is a good fit for you too. Hope this helps, good luck.

Hello.. so my dream has always been to be a US fighter pilot.. but there are a few problems.. I wasn't born in the USA but have been living here for 5 years (I have citizenship), I heard they only let people who are born in the USA be a fighter pilot.. Also, I have myopia... I read online that if somebody does an eye surgery due to bad vision, that could disqualify him from flying... Is there anyway of me reaching my drea..? it said *could* disqualify.... not *will* disqualify..

Question: if I go ROTC route and I want to join the AF as a pilot, and the college I want to go to offers Army ROTC, am I committed to the Army or will the AF accept me? There is a cross town agreement thing that allows me to go to one college but also go to another college for AFROTC. Basically, if I want to go AF do I need to do AFROTC? No where on the internet tells me so far... thanks!
