I'd always thought pilot training was a eat or be eaten kind of thing. But when you said you guys were in the parking lot one night helping a buddy with patterns that was the coolest thing ever. Such a bro thing to do and it really changed my opinion about pilot training. I now view it as a more than just training, it's about teamwork!

Great video as always. Deuce did a fantastic job of inspiring young aspiring military pilots with his story and advice. I was in the 102nd Fighter Wing At Otis ANGB and was at Pease once on our way home from Tyndall when our older C-130 couldn’t land at Otis due to about a 50 ft. ceiling. We had to take a ride on one of those old Blue AF school buses back to the Cape. Deuce obviously lost his Yankee accent from New Hampshah! Thank you for your service to both of you. Oh how I wish I had made "other" choices when I was younger... (Job, wife, children... or, fly high performance jet A/C... Guess which I chose...) Oh well, someone had to go to work and pay for all that fuel you fella's were burning through ;-) Thank you gentlemen!!! Note: I did save enough money to get my PPL in the 90's, so all was not lost... It wasn't Mach 2 but it was just right for me, took my young daughter to lunch, my son to visit his aunt, and made my wife sick... (not on purpose I might add) I enjoyed taking folks up for their 1st flight, my wife taught at an underprivileged school and I dearly loved taking those young folks up for a spin and at least expose them to the world from a different perspective from what they were used to. I've got a board down stairs full of pictures from folks that got their 1st flight from me and I loved every single minute :-)

Haha! Before I retired, being a peace-loving guy and all, I figured one year's income tax paid for one Blue Angel's fuel for one air show. Now I think it would cover one Blue Angel's flight suit.

Thanks CW and Deuce. First and foremost, Thank each of you for your service to America protecting and defending those freedoms we cherish and love. We very much appreciate your sharing with others, especially the younger fans, what it takes to achieve your dreams. My takeaway from all of your videos CW as well as Deuce's story is - set your goals high, do all you can to learn what it will take to achieve those goals, be flexible and be adaptable to every situation while pressing forward. Sometimes a little patience will go a long way. Opportunitys will present themselves if you're alert, be prepared to recognize and take advantage of them. "Don't be a douch" being the prevelant theme as some opportunitys will not come your way if you are. My Grandson followed those guidelines, worked hard to attain a 4.0, did everything he could to build his resume and won an appointment to West Point. He will be a Junior next year and YES, we're very proud of him. If only we could have a "do over" I would have looked hard at being a pilot (which is why I love your channel now CW) but in 1966 I had no aspirations to be a pilot, chose Army infantry instead but it did not take long to decide I wanted to be an officer becuse the money was better. With no college, NCO academy was my next choice but while in the NCO school an opportunity presented itself for OCS and I took it. That was 1969, graduated then went to Artillery branch school at Ft. Sill. I finished my military career as XO Battery C, 2nd Btn 218th Arty June of 1973.

Far ,Far away in a distant galaxy?Again, I learn something with every video,everyone is living their own story, don`t judge ,put your hand out and help.Thank you again for your humility, and compassion to your fellow pilots, brothers and sisters in service,all the young people who watch,your patience, your love for flying,and sharing your knowledge,people learn by example and yours is an honorable one....

You are providing invaluable information to young people. This information, if used and acted upon will definitely change the coarse of many lives. This is information I wish I would have had back in the day. I’m 60 now and wish almost daily I had access to this kind of knowledge and guidance when I was young. At the age of 38 I had the opportunity to actually fly a fighter jet owned by a physician friend of mine. He taught me how to do loops and barrel rolls. I smiled for a month! I’ve done a lot of adrenaline inducing things in my life but none compared to flying that jet. I was already too old too make it happen for myself. The info you’re giving people is a huge game changer. Thanks Mover. Great work!

Gentlemen, I want to thank you for your service. Seeing this video ( I subscribed by the way) brought back memories for me. I served in the USAF during Vietnam. I am glad you guys reach out and inspire our younger generation not only with these videos, but I notice you take the time to follow up and respond to people's comments and questions here. I wish I had known guys like you back when I was young, I would have made better choices about career and life. I always wanted to fly, started PPL at Patrick AFB, (on the Apollo 16 and 17 moon missions) but got sidetracked by a bad instructor pilot. Now, my flying is in DCS, and sometimes I visit the local airport for rides in private planes. I figure I am too old to get a PPL now, at 66. I have flown the Cessna 150,172, a BD5, Stearman and a Navajo. Again, thank you guys for your service "Pappy"

I went through an NROTC scholarship starting in 1965, then to sea for a year by choice. At the 9 month point, I applied for Flight School & got it. I did all the physical stuff... in fact it was fun, though I'm no jock. I got set back a week thought due to pull-ups* and shuttle sprints. Academics were no problem either (in flight school - college was another matter). (* the exercise, not the pants ) I didn't have the grades for jets, though & later washed out before hitting the carrier. :( Still, it was a great experience & I'd do it again. I think your idea of helping bro's would've helped me get through. Help was available, but I was too embarrassed to ask. I would've liked to see what you were shooting. It doesn’t matter how you get a commission (ROTC, OTS, or Academy), nothing guarantees a “fighter pilot” slot. There is no such thing. Only two things matter: Your pilot training class standing and the particular airplanes that are available for your class. If there were no fighter slots available (unusual), you can’t get one. If there are three fighters available, and you are #4 in your class you won’t get one. So, the lesson is, you better be in the number 1-3 position in your class to get a fighter.

Here's how being a douche can follow you around for years. I had a buddy who on a Friday after the morning go was playing crud in the squadron break room. The beer light was on, porn videos were playing (this was back in the 1990's!) and everyone was winding down after a full week of flying. My friend was feeling no pain and ended up getting into a verbal altercation with the squadron CC over the crud game they were playing. Fast forward to Alaska where he got his F-15E ride, he flew for a couple of years but because of that verbal event that happened years before, he never made O-4 and and was forced to leave the air force but was lucky enough to become a contractor working for the Saudis as an instructor on the F-15S. Does it "black ball" you into always flying multiengines or is it feasible to transition someday?

So from watching your videos, I feel like I would love to be a fighter pilot, however my main concern is that I won’t be able to make it because of this reason. When I ride roller coasters, I get terrified and hate the feeling you get when you go down a drop and your body tenses up (that might be just me), it’s like the worst feeling in the world to me lol. I got a few backseat rides before UPT-one in a T-38, 2 in F-16s. I threw up on all of them. You get over it, and it’s easier when you’re the one actually flying. If you want it, you just have to be persistent and not give up.

Heavily considering joining AFROTC to become a pilot. Could anyone tell me what it's actually like doing it?
@brandonberisford
@brandonberisford 5 лет назад
I was in AFROTC for about 2 years before being medically DQ'ed and removed (for something pretty minor). It was a good time when I was in. For me personally the ROTC det was at a school 45 mins away from my current school, so every tuesday, i had to wear my uniform, and go to my normal classes, and after those classes around 11 ish I would make the drive down to nashville and attend my ROTC classes for the day. It was one class that was like an hour of lecture on military history and information essentially, then another like 2 hours ish of leadership lab which consisted of alot of marching typically. It was a chance for the 300 and 400's to really take leadership roles and command the det, since they were the fully trained ones having done field training. They would allow the 200 cadets to typically lead flights to get practice for their upcoming field training and the 100 cadets were the guinea pigs that were still learning and absorbing any information they could. After leadership lab we'd have a quick break and transition into PT, and PT as a Detachment for an hour ish, and they we'd go home which typically put me home around 6-7pm. Then on friday mornings at 6am we had PT at our own respective schools, they would assign a cadet from each school to essentially lead PT, that way we all didn't have to drive an hour twice a week to do PT. That's about it really. I enjoyed the experience, made alot of great friends, its like a brotherhood, and they allowed me lots of cool opportunities like flying actual aircraft through CAP flights, being on a color guard team and presenting the colors to a room full of 1000+ current and retired veterans etc. I am now on my way to joining the Marines, and waiting for word whether or not I made it into OCS as a pilot candidate! You never know your path! Good luck!!

I would have liked to have heard more about the timelines of training. How long was UPT? How long was IFF? Since you didn't say anything about your actual fighter training, how long was that? Were you combat qualified when you went back to your unit? When did you get flight lead qualified in 2-ship? 4-ship? How long was survival training? In all are you talking about 1 year? 2 years? 3 years? More?

No such thing. The one that takes you and works out for you is the best path.

All that matters from the active duty perspective is getting a pilot slot. The academy may get more pilot slots per capita than ROTC, but they are still readily available from ROTC. Tracking to fighters is determined at UPT for active duty guys. If you go the ANG/reserve route you know you’re going to a fighter before UPT. There’s pluses and minuses to both ways.

You should make a video on if you should enlist before you commission! If not, could you help me out in the comments. I’m currently in my freshman year of college for aviation. I am an adoring Aviator, and by the time I graduate I’ll have my pilots license and 2 other civilian aviation ratings. I’m considering enlisting in the Navy to help pay for college and get some time under my belt, but I’ve been talking to some people and some tell me it’s a good idea to enlist before I try to go officer and others have told me that it is very difficult to go from an enlisted personnel, to an officer! So, I’m not sure on what to do.
@CWLemoine

You don't need to enlist. It's a valid way to pay for college, but it is certainly not required.

@Christian if you don't need it to pay for school, I wouldn't. Get your degree. Get some flight time if you can. Get your scores up as high as you can on all the tests and keep your GPA up.

For ROTC (and I believe the academy as well) you could apply for ENJJPT when you apply for UPT. You need to get selected for it. Theoretically you get either a fighter or bomber out of it but that hasn’t always been the case. I honestly didn’t even apply for it as I was given some misinformation about it. But if you want fighters, it’s definitely something to go for.

Depends on what you consider to be late. If after when you can get a pilot slot then yes. If not, ROTC is better in that you can get a scholarship. With OTS, you know if you have a pilot slot before committing.

Hey! I'm 26 in a few days. Going back to college to get my associates then bachelors. I've always wanted to be a fighter pilot, but ended up starting a business when I was 20 and have been doing that ever since. Age wise, do I have even a slim chance of making it if I were to start the journey now? What branch would be the best route for my circumstances?
@Deuce_Dufresne
@Deuce_Dufresne 5 лет назад
Yes you can. Options haven’t changed, you’re not that old. You could find a school with ROTC, apply to the academy, or do OTS after you graduate. You could also try to get hired by a Guard or reserve unit. I’d go Air Force personally....
@ajsap8160
@ajsap8160 5 лет назад
@@Deuce_Dufresne First person to say that when answering this questions haha I was told ROTC would be the way, as OTS is much more competitive (not that I'm afraid of a little competition lol) AirForce is the goal but the air guard is definitely on the radar. Thank's for the help!
