Your nice video points out exactly we did our own conversion with a full time bed. We had an Airstream with a very similar set up and I hated the bed scene every night when 1) we were exhausted from driving 2) it was pouring rain outside 3) we had extra stuff to move around. In short we were able to get all the essentials in the same space but with a full time bed in the rear. Now we are happy campers.
Hello fellow PW FANS! We came across your channel by chance and are glad we did! We bought a PW Plateau FL in Feb 2018 and have been using regular king size sheets, but were hoping to find a better fix. Too much drama to make the bed every night. Your idea is genius! We were able to use queen size duvet cover for both the wool topper and the comforter. I used a speedy stitcher sewing awl to attach the clips to the comforter and it’s worked out great. Thanks for the great tips and we look forward to more tips. PS we did the same color scheme for the interior as you did. 🤩 Safe travels from Seattle RobnCyn ✌️🚐
Laura crowley We love She to Me’s tip on leaving the duvet covered wool bottom out as additional padding for the couch. We use stuff sacks to condense the upper comforter and pillows to fit into the cupboard above the couch.
Thanks so much Robin! The bedding situation has been hard for me to figure out. I really like this idea. I have the wool bottom in my shopping cart but haven't hit purchase yet!
Laura crowley It is tight with the sheepskin but that is because we each have 2 pillows. Usually I roll the bottom part up tightly or leave it draped across back seat.
Thank you, thank you, thank you... this is so helpful and luckily I do know how to sew. The clips that you put on the end of the end to keep the pad in place are ingenious. I hope you put out more videos.
Thanks Martha. When we get back home, I might try using a cotton duvet on the bottom. It was suggested that the jersey wouldn't move around as much. But I'd like to see for myself.
I think I have a better way now. The sheepskin took up so much space in the overhead. In a more recent video I made a couple of twin foam toppers covered in sheets I sewed into "pillow cases". And even after making those, I have another way of using them that I will show in a video. What would be perfect is if John weren't so tall and we could use some of the options that are more like a sleeping bag.
Absolutely brilliant. My husband and I are looking to order a Plateau TS for picking up next spring and the bedding was the one thing I could not figure out. Thanks for the tips! Now to find a seamstress.....
Thanks for your nice comments. I would recommend you experiment with items you may already have first. And depending on the height of the tallest person, you may have other options similar to those made by Beddys Beds. Since my husband is 6'5" that sort of bedding wasn't an option.
Since making this video, we have streamlined our bed even more. We find the mattress to be quite comfortable without any additional padding. We now use just a fitted sheet on the bottom.
Keeping the sheepskin with cover this way also prevents to need to go outside when it’s raining to connect the straps at the back. In the many years I was backpacking I rolled the sleeping bag like you did. Then I would have an old cushion cover that my mom sowed a few strings on the short end of the cover. I would wrap the cover around the rolled up sleeping bag and tie the strings in a knot to keep everything together. This would go into a waterproof bag and I would never worry about a wet sleeping bag. At night I would use the cushion cover to store my clothes and use it as a cushion.
One of the subscribers told me about a product from the UK called the Duvalay which looks interesting. I'm going to look into that at some point to see how much bulk it has. We are fortunate that the PW cushions are quite comfy.
From She to Me Duvalay is also sold through dealers here in The Netherlands. The guy who will do our van conversion uses Duvalay for the cushions. When we were there recently we sat in one of the project vans that already had the cushions installed, and they were very comfy. Don’t know about the mattress topper though. This video may help you in your research. m.ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-AxRsJ1Sav90.html.
From She to Me why thank you kindly. I hang out on RU-vid too much and blame my English and American friends for corrupting me and especially my English teacher at Highschool who lead me down this path of speaking the English. Anyway, glad to be of help. When conversion starts on our van, I will probably start posting videos. Take care and enjoy your travels.
We use a somewhat different approach in our PW Ascent. A fitted queen sized sheet fits well on the bottom. I have marked the short sides. Put it over the back BEFORE lowering the bed. After the boards and bolsters are in, lower the bed. Lift the square cushion and slip the sheet corner over it. Wrestle it back into place. Repeat on the other side, tucking under the end of the bolster. We each have a very compressible down sleeping bag and liner. These each fit in the far sections of that cabinet over the couch. In the center of that cabinet we each have a clothes storage box. The queen sheet fits between our clothing boxes when not in use. We have traveled for 3or four months several times. Hope this is useful for someone. By the way, I laughed at your video of all the features you didn’t use or like. Most of our complaints are the same. However, we got the generator fixed and use it and the microwave fairly often.
From She to Me yes, no storage room for anything under it. I forgot to mention that most of the time our mummy style sleeping bags are open over us with just our feet encased. In cold weather, we zip them, wear a hat and neck scarf and tuck our down jackets along the backdoor to reduce drafts and have the handy in the morning.
+Jennifer Sumner That says a lot about the comfort of their cushions. I could do it but John’s hip gives him a lot of grief...at least until he gets it “fixed”. Thanks again for sharing.
Thanks for sharing!, your channel just popped up. I would leave my bed ready for sleeping as at night, I do not have much energy left. Not yet bought my van, in between PW & Roadtreck.
I'm pretty sure PW won't sell directly because I investigated that. But I don't know about Roadtrek. If you can, check with owners in your area about where they get service and whether they are happy. Undoubtedly there will be issues with your new vehicle and you don't want the dealer to be too far or to not service you because you didn't buy it from them. There is a huge RV tech shortage and the dealers are swamped. We needed our propane system checked out while on the road and the nearest dealer said they were booked for weeks out. One mobile guy we called said he was booked until December. Anyway, good luck to you in your research.
You should try the british site for a 'durvalay sooo much easier and sooo mucy more comfortable. Its a memery foam bed topper and sleeping system combined
+Jacqueline Taylor That looks like a great product. I watched a RU-vid review of it by the Trudgians. If anyone sees this comment and wants to look at the product here is the link: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-wH-F9YbvNFc.html That idea is what I was trying to accomplish with the sheepskin pad. The biggest issue we would have is the storage. Thanks for sharing that information. I am going to do more research on cost and availability in the US.
We use a twin fitted sheet on the sofa part and nothing at the bottom. In a later video I show how I sewed a "pocket" to our duvet cover and we slip our feet in the pocket. So that means we have a layer between our skin and the bed. I am assuming the Ontour has the same "sofa" as our Ascent. The best sheet I have found for this purpose is from Target. It is the line that you can buy as separates. It has a super deep pocket with two layers of elastic that keep it on the bed.
I’m enjoying your videos and your creative storage solutions. Maybe you could make a video on your travel wardrobe and how you store it. We have just downsized from a travel trailer to a Class B and I am having trouble paring down the clothes I had room for in the trailer.
+Katy in NH Each board is: 25.75” long 10” wide .625” (5/8”) thick Board is 9 layer plywood plus wood veneer on both sides (each veneer probably 1/32” thick) The extra layers add considerable strength (versus standard marine grade plywood for example)
I was wondering how John makes it inside PleasureWay Ascent...I'm sure its not tall enough to accommodate his stature? I am curious since I am also a John and I am over 6'3" there aren't many Vans (if any) that have an interior height his size? BTW your videos are captivating, intelligent, and so practical. You should be working at White House!
+jrnyman1957 LOL. This is straight from John. The two issues he has are that there is a knob that sticks down from the fan that he hits all the time and the air conditioner comes out of the roof several inches and he hits that as well. And I will add that if I don’t close the overhead cabinet doors there is heck to pay. You are right it is more challenging for tall guys but I would also throw in that height is only as big an issue as width. You need to be able to squeeze by another person who is occupying the aisle. The video that is being posted later today will convince you that I’m actually a doofus.
Debbie - I really appreciate your helpful vlogs. I am curious if this "duvaley" style wrapped memory foam is what you ended up with or if the wrapped sheepskin is the most recent version for you bedding? I haven't actually taken delivery of my ex-Canadream Ford transit Plateau, so I also wanted to ask - why does one need a topper at all ? To smooth out the bumps?
The Sheepskin is certainly very comfortable but a pain to store so it was jettisoned. The duvaley style worked well for smoothing out bumps and also serving as a bottom sheet to protect the cushions, but it also got jettisoned to save space. We have found that the Pleasureway bed is so comfortable that we don't really need anything but a sheet on the bottom. So I suggest you try your bed without anything and then go from there. Of course everyone has different needs and circumstances. My challenge is John's height which meant that some of the other options out there don't work for us. Good luck. Let me know how it goes for you.
@@FromShetoMe Thanks and good suggestion to try it first before I buy something. I plan on using Wiggy's Slumber Bags 84" x 36" instead of sheets/comforters as I've used them in my travel trailer and they're great. Better than regular sleeping bags because of great quality and washability. Also I use pillow shams as stuffers for the bags.
@@danareed38 Yes, that should be great. John doesn't want separate sleeping bags. I think it is because he likes to torture me by letting in the cold air. But next winter I may make the switch.
Yes it is small for him but that is also how he sleeps at home, feet hanging over the end of the bed. The van bed is wider than ours at home. I guess it's just what we get used to.
I have fabric caravan-style cushions in my Sprinter which I was just going to put a sheekskin topper on, then put a fitted sheet over to keep it in place and use a duvet. After seeing your demo, I'm now thinking of making myself something like the 'Duvalay' - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-m08n64p4kHI.html - easier for a single - I'll get a plain cotton single and a queen Duvet cover the same and sew them together down one side - put the topper/sheepskin in the single and then add my Duvet into the queen - think it should work. Thanks for the inspiration!
hi, i need to know what do you think about sportsmobile sprinte 4x4 144 van. I remember you mention this during your decision making on what type of van you going to get. I also like ascent but they do not make 4x4. I am pleanning to pull small trailer that is why i want 4x4 ..
You certainly don't need a 4x4 to pull a trailer with this vehicle. It has lots of power. 4x4 is nice for the extra ground clearance and potential snow, but I do not think you will want to take them on dirt roads if they are of the high top variety. Every bump is seriously amplified. We literally crawl when we are approaching any bumps or potholes.
Wow,,,I'm exhausted watching you/this. hahahah You do this twice a day.. make-up & break down? PW should consider installing ceiling drop beds,, they come in handy.
Great video. Since posting the video are there any draw backs to this bedding? I purchased rv superbugs and have found ourselves sleeping on the zipper or the leather seats during the night. I really want to try your method. It looks so cozy.
+Laura crowley Funny you should ask. The mistake I made on this trip is trying something new to save space. I left the sheepskin home and we are both missing it. I was trying to save space. I need to figure a way to better secure it inside the duvet at the edges to reduce bulk. While it is good to have extra fabric to tuck in at the sides, I am thinking about making the sheepskin the exact size of the bed and just leaving the duvet larger for tucking. A California King Duvet seems to be the right size for this.
Thanks so much for your thoughts on bedding. It has been the only area of this lifestyle that I haven't quite figured out. Your new idea sounds like it might work. I would like to be able to put all the bedding in the overhead cabinet. We tried leaving the bed made on our last trip and I really missed having the couch during the day. Looking forward too watching all your videos today.
Thank you for your video. I enjoy your approach to RV'ing. I have a question...even though the fleece is thick (I presume 2" loft), does it even out or smooth the transitions from one cushion to the couch? We have an Interstate and there are a couple of transitions from seat to couch that are very pronounced. Just wondering whether your method will make these a non-issue.
Yes, it does smooth out the transition and I can't even feel the gap. But the cushions in the PleasureWay are really comfortable so that may also be factoring into it. I sleep better in that bed than I do at home.
Catherine, many remove those boards per Airforums. If needed afterwards, The foam factory dot com sells a wedge shaped fill in piece for joining two twin box frame for a king size mattress. That might work for you or a pool noodle. Hope this helps
Hi Debbie. Hi John. This is Thavone from td adventures channel. Thank you so much for making this video. Because all Pleasure-Way beds are the same, I am adding the link of this video to two of our pin posts: One is how to put the bed together for OnTour 2.2 video ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-gCFfT2jBiw8.html The other is Pleasure-Way Ascent walk-through video ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-GXhvuRD4peA.html We are learning so much from all your videos. Thank you so much !!! keep them coming !!!
We continue to learn from our viewers and from using the rig. We still love it and would buy it again. Half the fun is customizing to suit individual needs.
I have been shopping for the " Imperial Wool mattress cove" a king 78"X 80" is $309. but you bed should be the same as our bed and it is 75" long X 69" wide. Did you have to cut some off? The queen was to small. How did you make it work I think it is a great idea.
Hi John. I did not cut the wool pad. The small amount of extra helps to keep it tucked in on the sides. I did however have to cut and re-sew the duvet cover that it slips into. A bit awkward because of its size but doable.
