I wish she had specifically mentioned incompetent cervix. My doctor has never recommended bed rest for me, but when I was pregnant with a preventative cerclage after my previous loss, I listened to my body. If I had any kind of cramping or bleeding, you can bet I was in bed. I firmly believe this helped keep me pregnant. There are many women in the incompetent cervix community who have the same experience, and many others who continued regular exercise and had premature births. I would need some very strong evidence specific to incompetent cervix to convince me that bed rest is never a good idea.

Hi, I'm also an IC mama. I totally agree with you. It's so frustrating in the US they usually don't even believe in bed rest even for women like us and it's total bs. We are pretty much the only women who physically cannot carry a baby yet they still just don't believe in it. We should absolutely be on at the very least modified BR. I had to fight with my doctors, and I also had other complications but was on light duty with my oldest, and modified bed rest with my youngest from the very beginning with a cerclage after 4 losses, 1 at 21+6 to IC. I strongly believe it kept me pregnant with my 2 living boys.

I'm 72 (almost 73) and so happy to see this video. In 1985 I gave birth to my 3rd and 4th children: twin boys who (like my daughters) arrived two weeks after my due date. They weighed 8 pounds each, and ended up being born by C-section. Prior to getting pregnant, I weighed 102 pounds, but I'd already given birth to two singletons without problem, each of whom weighed over 9 pounds at birth, so I felt confident of my own ability to carry to term, however, my doctor anticipated complications and accordingly, recommended bed rest for the last couple of months of my pregnancy. But I'd read extensively about bedrest and I couldn't find anything that convinced me it was healthy, and even back then, there were a lot of doctors talking about the dangers you mentioned associated with bedrest. Besides, I had an active 6-year-old and 9-year-old to deal with at home! So I told my doctor that I couldn't agree to bedrest, and since I managed to carry beyond my due date, clearly that worked out fine for me. So many of my friends at that time were put on bed rest, though. I'm happy to see it's no longer recommended.

I have cervical insufficiency, a delivery at 20+6 where I was put on trendelenburg bed rest but ultimately delivered likely due to infection. For my subsequent pregnancies (both with preventative cerclage). I worked the entire time. I was a part of a couple of incompetent cervix groups and there are still a lot of people doing bed rest and some putting themselves on bed rest against doctors recommendation. I understand why it’s really scary in a subsequent pregnancy after such a loss. I know I had days myself where if I felt a little off or a little bit of pressure and I sent myself to lie down hoping to feel better and usually it helped. It’s also really hard to trust providers in situations like IC, where sometimes a dx is not clear cut. Like for me where my first pregnancy was term, it was my second baby that came early. With my first cerclage pregnancy I had to go against MFM recommended for the watch and wait and got the preventative cerclage. I could not risk losing another baby especially since it was 9 years after my loss and I was 39. Turned out I made the right decision when my ob took my cerclage out and I immediately dilated to 4cm he had to concede that I was right all along.

Can you please link the studies that show that bed rest is not needed for people with shortening cervix and premature ruptured membranes? I am based in Germany and here is is recommended by healthcare professionals in these cases. If you could link the study I can bring it up with my doctor with a reference. Thank you!

Thank you Dr Perez I am not ob gyn but I wish someone could just explain why a woman who experiments contractions when walking or standing or doing light housework could feel better when is on bed rest . I think not everything is about studies but listen to your body, and doctors should listen more the patients perhaps the very few studies that have been done

Yes. I was in hospital for weeks because I had a bulging water bag (or however it might be said) at 26 weeks (with twins). I was still encouraged to get up and move around once I was off magnesium. And when I didn’t feel up to it or wanted to go far they wanted me to be pushed around in wheel chair by my mom. My main OB did want me to not walk much because I have always gotten lots of contractions while walking. One of the other OBs in practice who had never seen me pre-hospital kept pushing me to walk. It was so confusing, but then my water (for baby a) broke and was like a river flowing out of me constantly so the debate was over at that point. 12 hours later I had an emergency csection because my sweet little girl was coming out feet first. 😕 But even with all of that the words bedrest were never used except by my mom and the OBs kept correcting her. 😅

I was recently advised “modified bed rest” due to spotting for weeks in first trimester - I take it super easy on days I’m spotting more or feel off, but on better days go for a short walk and do light chores. It’s really stressful to get a “threatened abortion” diagnosis and wonder if you can prevent it, so thank you for the information!

My mom was ordered to be on bedrest really early because of the way her uterus is positioned. I remember her saying it tilts in a way where the ligaments couldn't support her uterus as I grew bigger. She likes to say that I was born from an upside-down uterus haha. I figured that you might find that interesting! I wonder what she would've been recommended these days.
@kristigermain834
@kristigermain834 3 месяца назад
Likely she has a tipped or retroverted uterus which is a completely normal uterine position and she is not considered high risk. They just didn't know as much back then. Bed rest was unnecessary. I have an incompetent cervix and even in my case doctor usually don't agree with bed rest. I was bed rested, modified with my 2 living son's but also had other complications, poly, placenta previa, and SCH. I was bed rested from the very beginning. IC means I physically cannot carry a baby to term without surgery. I've had 4 losses including my oldest at 21+6 weeks due to Ic.

I‘m 34+4 weeks pregnant now and started to have premature labour symptoms (mostly contractions, also diarrhoea) yesterday. I think it might have been caused by the heat in combination with too much activity and too little water intake. Today I noticed I have regular contractions whenever I do anything, like normal household chores, or even just sitting, do I actually try to rest. I hope it helps to continue a couple more weeks

My doctor recommended bed rest for a 4.3 cm subchorionic hematoma. And also no exercise. I feel like this is overkill as I haven't even had bleeding (yet). I'm not sure the risks vs benefits of bed rest for this vs just taking it easy. And scared to exercise now

I am from Korea and had my second baby there at W27 after getting an emergency cerclage at W23 for 0cm cervix length and bulging membrane. After the cerclage the doc refused to discharge me and put me in the hospital bed and we had to get her out by csection for the bulging membrane again at W27. Now I am pregnant with my third in the US and had a preventive cerclage at W13, a week before it was originally planned because my cervix was already 2.6cm. For the past 10 weeks, the cerclage seemed to work fine and my cervix length was around 3.5cm until yesterday when I found out that it got shorten to 2.5 again on W23. The doc didn't recommend bed rest and prescribed progesterone suppositories and I am super scared that what happened to my second baby would happen again. Still nothing I can do to keep her in me longer?

@naleefabanu5359 Unfortunately, she lost the baby. She went completely against her doctors advice and went back to work as normal and was very active. She started having pains but didn't go to the doctor because she said she thought it was just diarrhea. By the time she did go to the hospital, she was already in labor at around 20 weeks. They tried to stitch her uterus shut, but it was too late. She just couldn't cope with staying in bed all day. She is the kind of person who loves to talk to everybody about everything, and I can understand how hard it was for her to be alone at home. I think in the end, she didn't want to carry the pregnancy to full term. I cant imagine the struggle you're experiencing, but the best advice I can give is just to listen to your doctor and dont be afraid to reach out to them. My friends doctor said if she were to try again, he would stitch her uterus shut from the start. I dont think she is interested in trying again, though.

Wild! I had my 1st & 2nd children at 18 & 20 years old. Ironically, that’s how old they are today. I was on complete strict bed rest, a cerclage, with a tributeline pump going 24/7 for MONTHS! It’s amazing I survived it. When my son was 4 months old I broke my foot. First bone I’ve ever broken even though I played sports in my youth. FTR I went on to have more babies with zero interventions from conception to birth. I also didn’t have anymore preterm babies. Just the first & second we’re preterm.

HELLP syndrome is a very serious illness! The person may be in bed simple because they are not well enough to ambulate. Because HELLP syndrome is so serious, we are typically intervening immediately and patients on magnesium sulfate shouldn’t ambulate because it causes muscle weakness and makes someone a fall risk. This is one of those examples where the degree of severity and the side effects of a necessary treatment may mean not leaving the bed, and this is in the in hospital and acute setting. Thanks for sharing your story to illustrate that point!
